How To: Preparing Reclaimed Wood For Use

In this video i describe the process of preparing a reclaimed board for use on a project. I describe the methods available to removes nails, to treat for wood boring bugs and how to clean each board. I will show you my preferred method of each of these steps and why i choose them.

Thank you very much. I will spray first then sand the woods second. Save the pressure washing because my reclaimed wood were structural wood which are not dirty .

Do you use a dust mask of some kind? I'd worry about lead paint and mouse droppings leaving hantavirus.

No it isn't... one claw is just longer than the other. It is supposed to be like that! You must not have spent a lot of time at the hand tool department 🤷‍♀️ Try looking up "carpenter's hammer" 😉

Would there be a benefit to sandling the boards down and cleaning them up before treating them with Bora-care or do you think it a bit redundant?

If the board has a bunch of dirt, best to clean it off first before the bora care to penetrate the wood.....as long as the spray can’t soak into the wood you are good

I was wondering the same thing. I just reclaimed 100+ year old 8”x8”x24’ oak beams out of a barn to use for a timber frame roof over our porch. I was curious if I clean them and then apply the Bora-Care stuff does it discolor the wood at all?

Orbital sander just as good?

Orbital sander will work.....it May take a bit longer and put more wear and tear on the orbital sander.

I honestly have the same question and most videos only talk about bugs and termites but skip over anything having to do with mold

I wonder if there is a more environmentally-friendly option that is affordable. It's such a shame to have to use pesticides.

I typically agree, however, Boracare is just boric acid from Borax. It's essentially the same stuff in Borax washing powder and pretty inert. Borax is a natural substance.

Come to find out Boracare is illegal in California but we can buy all kinds of other harmful chemicals. Seems like it's just the companies that have lobbied the proper politicians that are allowed to sell their chemicals here.
