I LOVE the colour and texture of dried flowers! Did you grow those beautiful Rose's? Another way to preserve is using glycerin. I did some Bay Magnolia leaves years ago for Christmas, and they're still green and pliable. You can set them in a jar to draw up the glycerin, or submerge them. I microwave some of my herbs that I use for teas, and they usually turn out with even better colour than if I sun-dried them. Try putting the flower between 2 paper towels and ONLY do for 1 minute. That should be sufficient for most items. If not, then do 20 second increments. There is a drawback with some materials if they are high in minerals; Stinging Nettle will start a fireworks display in the microwave due to it's high iron content! It's great for Basil, which usually turns black when drying using other ways, though it will lose a little of it's delicious anise smell. I do most basil as pesto and freeze in ice cube trays, I also store it in olive oil which works pretty good too. A great tool for flowers is a chopstick. Helps reach those hard to get to places. Your Roses are so fabulous! Do they retain scent when you use Silica? You're such a bizzy, bizzy bee! 🐝🥀🐝 P.S. I think you need an Aloe plant standing by for your burns. Works wonders immediately! I heard it must be at least 2 years old to get those benefits. Adios! :))

Just starting to dry flowers . Used the book method, which worked for small Flowers. Problem being most of the color dissipates . So from watching your video it seems the silica gel is the best method to hold color. Please correct me is I am wrong. Video was very helpful
@JulieHiltbrunner2 жыл бұрын
I think silica gel keeps the color the best. I did not like it on red roses because they turn black. White roses aren’t really that pretty either but the pink, orange roses, yellow roses come out pretty good. One weird thing I don’t like about it is that when you hold the flower you can kind of still hear a couple of the silica beads jiggling around in them you can’t ever get all of them out.

@Peleski3 жыл бұрын
I think the hot glue is a good idea to keep the petals together. Generally if you wave a heat blower gun over those annoying strands of hot glue they will dissipate, but I don't know if the force would be too much. I suppose if you held the flower upside down and blew downwards it might be ok.

Brilliant. Do you have to bake the silica gel after a while to re-activate it? I know that you DID heat it up, but how long does it last if you don't? My wife does a LOT of floral arrangements with silk flowers and uses a hot glue gun. She burns herself every time, sometimes more than once. The glove idea sounds like it might work. Great narration as well! Be well, and stay safe.

Hi Julie! Great video! I was wondering whether you have tried drying the complete rose i.e. a top of the flower and a stem? I really need the complete flower in my project without using glue or detaching the stem from the flower in the process. I look forward to your answer! Maybe other viewers have some experience with it? : )
@JulieHiltbrunner3 жыл бұрын
To do what you’re asking here’s what I would do: Get a PVC tube to put the rose in. You will have to fill it most of the way with silica gel so you’ll have to duck tape the bottom or something. Then buy as many bags as you need to fill that tube. You’ll have to carefully pour it in around the top of the rose. I don’t do it because the bags of silica gel or 20 bucks each. But it’s totally doable.

how long do the roses last with Silica Gel method? and can I submerge the rose stems in Silica Gel as well to not have to glue it on later? Thanks! really enjoyed your video 💗
@JulieHiltbrunner15 күн бұрын
Thanks for your comment. So if you wanted to keep the stems on, you could put the rose into a tube then you need to fill silica gel in around the rose with the stem. I just remove it to make it easy to stack up a bunch of roses together . I leave it in there for about a month. And then they can last one to two years before you get bored with them.
@ashleybailey78872 жыл бұрын
Can you preserve the stem also?

I came up with a great idea. Cut a hole in a cup for the stem for the flower is in the cup and the stem is poking out the bottom. Tape around. Fill with silica gel beads. Put a lid on it. Not you have to have a shelf with holes or a bin to support it.

So I’ve done this, one problem I had is they keep drying, I have a sunflower on my shelf and it curled and got crispy. Do I need that spray for after? Do I rinse them? The dust of silica is still there even though I brushed it with a brush and is enough to continue to dry them.
@JulieHiltbrunner4 жыл бұрын
Don’t rinse them. I’ve never tried sunflowers this way. But sunflowers are where sunflower oil comes from. Maybe all that oil is gathering the dust.
@StinkyDustyBird4 жыл бұрын
Julie Silversmyth all of them kept disintegrating. I couldn’t leave them in for more than a couple days, cosmos, petunias, coreopsis, so many just fell apart taking them out. Sunflowers did the best but continue to crumble. Sunflower oil is from the seeds, these didn’t have seeds yet.

What that spray is for?
@JulieHiltbrunner8 ай бұрын
It’s supposed to help preserve the color. It’s at the craft store in the floral section.

how can you do a whole rose with the stem with leaves? Can you put a whole one in a silica gel?
@JulieHiltbrunner4 жыл бұрын
Yes! You need a piece of cardboard tube and several $20 bags of silica gel. It’s not very cost effective but if money is no object... why not! I prefer to just dry the stems without silica gel and just glue them back on when done. I don’t have enough storage space to have so many bags of gel, either. But it’s totally possible!

Is that hairspray at the end of the video? Also you glue them back onto the stem or another random stick?
@JulieHiltbrunner3 жыл бұрын
It’s not hairspray. That’s fried floral preservative. Helps prevent fading and shattering. You can glue it to dried stems or to sticks.

Can the flowers crumble if ur not careful like pressed flowers?
@TinyChickPottery3 жыл бұрын
They don’t crumble unless you whack them or your cat attacks them. They remain pretty fragile. Try incasing in resin if you need to knock them around! I wouldn’t try shipping them.

So, yes I agree with me(Tiny Chick Pottery).

I bought the flower preserving gel beads and they left little dents in all of my petals :(

I wonder if anyone has found a solution to that issue.

Just leave your rose stem for a couple of weeks and it will dry out.

So sorry for your loss.

I'm doing the same! My grandpa's funeral was a few days ago and I brought back a rose that broke off of a floral piece so I've been hanging it upside down to dry in a cabinet but I'm still looking into other methods to preserve it. I'm sorry to hear you've also recently lost a grandparent though
