How to Press in a Control Arm Bushing

The prosses of replacing a broken cv axle in a rust belt Honda Accord was complicated by a bolt frozen in a control arm bushing. I had no alternative but to drive it out and replace the bussing.

i like how you used the bushing to guide the blade when cutting the bolt. that's a great tip for anyone who doesn't have a slide hammer to knock out the seized bolt

Thanks for the idea, I tried many different ways to get that bolt out. I even tried my air hammer to no avail. Because the bushing was incased in rubber, the rubber just would absorb the impact. I could not use my torch because I would have burned some of the rubber creating toxic fumes and the bushing would be destroyed anyway. Cut and replace I think was my best option.

I purchased my kit 5 years ago and as I recall I paid $120 for it. If you paste this (27PC Universal Press Pull Sleeve Kit Bush Bearing Removal Insertion Tool Kit Set) in the eBay search window several kits will come up that look identical to mine, most for under $100. Thanks for the question.

How about doing all of the bushings while you have it off the car ?

The other bushings were in pretty good shape. If one or more of the other bushings needed to be replaced, I would have gone ahead and replaced the control arm. It was a family members car and like most all of us these days does not have much money. He barely could afford the drive axle I was replacing. But yes, it makes sense to replace them all and i would have if circumstances were different. Thanks for the question and by all means thanks for watching.

It is called a suspension busing press kit. It did not have a brand name. You can find them on eBay

Always an issue
