Just shows that age isn't always a sign of know how. I'm almost 50 years old and a life-long diy mechanic type and you young man, just saved my day and deserve the praise you're getting in your comments. Thanks for taking the time to share this ingenious solve to an annoying problem that places like A1 Auto and the like, don't address in their diy tutorials. Take care and thanks!

I want to thank you so much for making this video. My wife (who is partially disabled) and I have been struggling to remove the front driver-side drive axle from our 2004 Grand Caravan for over a week, and today we bought the tools to make your make-shift vice-grip puller tool. She went out to use it (while I watch the kids in the house after throwing out my back this morning) and after only a few tries that sucker popped right out! We are so happy, and so glad to have found your exceptionally helpful video. We are so very grateful for your ingenuity and that you shared it with the world.

I have a 2002 Saturn VUE AWD with 198,000 miles and both hub assembles and CV Axels have failed on both sides, could not remove hubs from front outer axel assembles, had to brake front axel assembles from hub assembles and cut both CV boots from each side and the inner axel assembles did not come out at all, utilized a slide hammer with pressure pliers connected to the end and both inner axel assembles which in turn made the inner axels pop out quickly with no problem whatsoever. You are the MAN, Thank you so much, God Bless and Stay Safe Amen.

Thank you so much for this sweet tool trick. I used a vice grip with a 5/16 screw because that's all I had. 3 foot of all thread from the Home Depot, some nuts and some flange washers. I didn't have a handleless sledge hammer so I used a 17mm closed box wrench and hit the handle of the wrench with a sledge hammer. Worked like a dream on a Toyota Rav 4 with 90,000 miles.

Wow this is great... It's so satisfying to invent your own tool. I have a piece of scrap wood with a long screw through it, and it holds back the belt tensioner on my John Deere lawn tractor's snowblower.. It is quick and simple and I can slip the belt on and off with zero drama as the belt hangs loose.. Similarly, I use vise grips to clamp onto the casing underneath the mower deck,. This allows me to take off the mower blades without the hub turning... I have also built a wooden dolly to introduce the snow blower to the tractor at the correct height.. I am 74 and a retired finance director and when it comes to money, I am as tight as a crab's bottom.... and that is water-tight.... Great job with the puller I will make one !

I spent all day yesterday trying to remove a CV axle. I even hooked a chain to it and tried to pull it out with my suv. The axle come apart at the joint. This morning I went to Lowe's and bought everything. I even got a 1/2" x 6" pipe to give me a handle. I then went to Harbor Freight and bought a short 3lb sledge hammer and drilled out the handle. Total cost $35. Four whacks and it popped out. Thank you so much. To add I bought the new Irwin Vise Grips with the blue handle. 3x the gripping power. $14 (part of the $35). They require 7/16" rod, washers, nuts.

It makes sense to use that type of tool. I used to work in an injection molding facility, and we had to use a tool like that, all the time, to remove stuck plastic plugs from the molds. Ours were designed to screw into the plugs while warm, let it cool over the screw, then hammer it out, but same concept. I'll try this if I need to, but hopefully I won't (need to). Thanks for the tip!

That's a great idea. Thank you for sharing it. Side note people... Make sure you can remove the whole cv axel from your vehicle. I couldn't get the right side axel to slide out from the hub on my Jaguar x type so I took it to a shop to have them do it. Told them to make sure they don't remove the axel from the transfer case due to the risk of damaging the internal seals. They ended doing it anyway because they couldn't get it out of the hub either. When they did, the c clip on the end of the axel ruined the 2 seals inside my transfer case. Now I have transmission fluid leaking into the transfer case and coming out the vent. The shop is now playing stupid saying they didn't remove it after telling me the day before that they had to. Even if they offered to fix it, I wouldn't let them do it anyway. They'd Probably try hot gluing it or something...

Nice improv tool. I've run across many stuck CVs. Never thought of this solution. What I have done, is first, I don't pull on the shaft. It just creates a mess. I take a chain and bolt. Chain around the back of the inside cup and put the bolt through the links, thread the nut on a bit... I then stretch the chain straight out, not catching on anything. I take a 10 lb. Sledge, run the chain around it just above the head. Put another bolt through that. Position myself like I'm putting, doink is mid-swing. Then swing it. It works every time, as long as I can get the chain back there. If I can't... I use a cable.

The CV axle in my 92 Accord has been in it for 190,000 mi. I was just thinking a slide hammer is about the only recourse I have at this point short of dropping the transmission and opening it up to try to get at that lock ring. That is a simple yet ingenious idea, thanks for posting this! I can confirm that about Lowes only having 7/16" Vice grips and full thread bolt that would fit in! Seeing this message makes me feel a little more confident since I imagine it worked for you! CV axle in 2009 Nissan Maxima is literally in there! Haha time to make some magic happend!

Great Idea! I used a vise grips and clamped a chunk of wire together with the piece of shaft and tied the other end of the wire to a sledgehammer and it came out easy.

Great idea! Tip for getting those rotor screws out. Use a ratchet with a 1/4” socket with a Philips head screw tip.

Thank you for this! 🙏🏾 Made my tool from 2 vice grips. All the materials for my rig was around 60 bucks, but I got the axle off. FINALLY!
