Thanks for the helpful video on the Bookoo scale. I tried to buy the scale, but my experience was terrible with the delivery to NYC. After more than a month calling Bookoo support, I never managed to have the package delivered to NYC. So, factors to consider are lower prices and random delivery.
@nickscoffeestudioАй бұрын
Wow, that's disappointing. Was it Bookoo or the delivery company?

Yay for more Irish folks and repping 3fe! Just got this setup for a cafelat robot, watching along for tips!
@nickscoffeestudio2 ай бұрын
Ah gotta love 3fe, though I think Velo and two fifty square are probably better. Glad to hear there's more Irish coffee fans out there! Never used the robot, but very tempted to get one to try it out. Either way, BooKoo kit is great and I reckon the scales is small enough to fit on the tray of the robot?
@joconnell2 ай бұрын
@@nickscoffeestudio Yeah if anything the bookoo scale is tooooo small with most cups that I'd use for a 240ml flat white covering over the display. The robot is a fab machine, I'm not really doing ultra light roast so the workflow is super smooth with no pre heating needed. Adding in all the bookoo stuff is a while other ballgame though with all of the various turbo / soup style shots being done at the minute. I love sumo as another irish roaster too!

Brilliant video. Beautiful room and setup. Just a suggestion: Use a wider lens (35mm) with a deeper focus which will help you to showcase the beautiful setup of your coffee station/shooting area (front & back) which currently is out of focus. Test out the lens on a day's rent first to see the results and then maybe buy one.
@nickscoffeestudio3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment! The lens here is the 16mm on a crop sensor a6700, so 24mm. I’m always deciding between wider or narrower aperture, some people like the narrow focus and others like it wider! I guess the wider aperture puts the focus on the topic of the video rather than the background. You’ll end up seeing a mix of both on my channel I suspect! Are you a coffee fan or film fan? Or both?!

Nice! Thanks for having this review out there. It made me purchase the kit as well for the flair 58. I've got a acaia lunar, as no other scale fits beneath the flair. This scale will most probably be sold, as the smart espresso profiler hardware is really, really expensive. Talking about the acaia/sep hardware, how do they compare? Any idea? The complete acaia/sep kit will be around 1000 dollars, so the price comparison is pretty clear. Thanks in advance!❤
@nickscoffeestudio2 ай бұрын
Good question, I was also looking at the Acaia Lunar, but decided it wasn’t worth the money in the end. Lance Hendrick recently uploaded a video on the comparison between the scales so check it out!

@nickscoffeestudio thanks Nick. I was more interested in the comparison of the pressure HW, Bookoo and Smart Espresso profiler with their scales. Any idea?
@nickscoffeestudio2 ай бұрын
@@0938890Erol Sorry I misread your comment! I've only used the BooKoo kit to date, so I can't really give you an idea of what the others are like. I've seen reviews on the SEP and I think it's broadly similar to the BooKoo kit. For me the BooKoo looks better and it's far cheaper as you mentioned. If they both do the same thing, then I'd likely take the same route as you mentioned, sell the Luna and go for the BooKoo kit.

Being eying this kit for some time. Thanks for the video. What is the deal with resistance? It did not show up in the graph. I guess resistance is related to how force you have to put in to reach a certain pressure level. If you grind finder you need less pressure to reach for ex 9 bar.
@nickscoffeestudio2 ай бұрын
Yes exactly, and it customisable for what you display on the graph too. In my case I didn’t want to go full on into a science class 😂 glad you liked the video. Let me know if you do end up getting the kit!

How easy/fast is it to have the scale and pressure sensor on and connected with each other? Do you have to pair them everytime you use them?
@nickscoffeestudio2 ай бұрын
It’s pretty seamless, once you open the app, it connects automatically to the sensor and scales. Provided they’re charged of course. And swapping out the stock pressure gauge for the BooKoo one takes literally 30 seconds!

Hey Nick. Great video. I have the same Flair58+ and Bookoo EM. Very much enjoying them. I find the app pretty good, but it is a pain that you have to choose between having a reference shot in the background and using the app autostart function (based on a pressure trigger). I always want the reference shot to work from, which means I have to manually hit the start button, which on a phone screen is fiddly. Have you found this? Seems like an easy fix for Bookoo. I have suggested this to them along with a few other minor things that IMO would really boost the UX... No reply yet
@nickscoffeestudio2 ай бұрын
Yeah I agree it’s a little annoying having to set up a reference shot manually, but I got used to it pretty quick. Overall for the money it’s a great kit I think. But now that you mention it, I must try setting up the app on the iPad. Might make for easier navigation and viewing. Perhaps not an option for everyone but you’re right, the small phone screen can be fiddly. Good feedback and hopefully BooKoo respond
@chris99232 ай бұрын
Cheers. I didn't explain my niggle with it very well... What's frustrating me is that the app has 1) an autostart function (triggered by reaching a pressure of your choosing) and 2) the ability to show the flow and pressure of a previous shot in the background (a reference shot), but annoyingly you can't use both options at the same time! Which would be great! Fingers crossed they update this. Subscribed so look forward to the next video 👍

Hey Nick, hope you're well. I am going to get the kit but i wanted to ask, do you feel getting the gauge is essential or could you do without it?
@nickscoffeestudio2 ай бұрын
The gauge isn’t completely necessary, but if there’s ever a time where you don’t want to use your phone to make a quick espresso then you are doing it blind. If you plan to connect to the app every time, then I’d say the gauge isn’t necessary
@LarryShwang2 ай бұрын
@nickscoffeestudio Ah I see. I think I will get the Gauge, relying solely on tech isn't my way. Thanks for your prompt response. Sorry, another question incoming.. How often do you clean the chamber of your Flair? Any maintenance tips?

hey Nick, thank you for the review! Do you know if it is possibile to pull a shot of 7grams with the flair 58+?
@nickscoffeestudio2 ай бұрын
7 grams of coffee beans? If so, yeah it’s possible, you’d get a 14g shot with a 1:2 ratio. There are 7/8g baskets on the market for 58mm portafilter. Have you got a flair 58?
@Nhope_Music2 ай бұрын
yes fresh coffee beans :) I'm thinking about to buy it to get more temp control in the process. I had a delonghi dedica with bottomless portafilter, manual grinder and other stuff: it was funny, but I don't want maitenance problems😎
@nickscoffeestudio2 ай бұрын
Well I don't think you'll regret getting a Flair 58, but just remember, it's big learning process. You might not get great results right away, but stick with it and you'll get there! I'd also suggest using the stock flair 58 basket to start off with. 18g of coffee in, 36 out. That's a standard double shot which arguably will be more suited to the flair 58 for beginners :) Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions!

Great video! I'm not sure how long you've had the Bookoo kit for but have you seen a difference in repeating desired shots? Also, did it start timer as soon as it felt pressure? Also Also, do you normally slowly decline the pressure early in your shots? Sorry for all the questions! Many thanks.
@nickscoffeestudio2 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment! I've seen a huge difference in getting more consistent shots, it really does make it much easier. Yes, the timer on the scales starts as soon as it feels any pressure. And no, I tend to have a more rounded curve at the top, generally getting up to 9 bars at peak but in the video (out of 4 different attempts) this was the most representative - I probably shouldn't have tried to do it backwards. If you ever try using the Flair facing away from you, you will know what I mean! Have you got a Flair 58?
