My wife and I are known by the neighbors as kind, generous, but no nonsense. We work hard, we pay our bills, we sometimes mow other lawns, clear snow, share our produce, take neighbors to the range. We have keys to one another's homes for emergencies. We lend our tools to each other. It is comfortable knowing that your neighbor watches your home while you are on vacation with a loaded gun and a backhoe.

Hey Phil, Being known as kind and generous while also setting clear boundaries is a great balance. It’s comforting to know that you have each other’s backs, especially in times of need. Sharing responsibilities, like mowing lawns and looking out for one another’s homes, really creates a sense of security. And knowing that your neighbor is keeping an eye on your place with a loaded gun and a backhoe while you’re away? That’s definitely peace of mind! It’s a great reminder of the importance of building good relationships with those around us.

Hard disagree. You don't know how anyone else is going to react under pressure. If your neighbor has your housekey, and authorities or marauders are putting them under pressure to hand it over, I guarantee that they will do so to save themselves.
@phild80952 ай бұрын
@@yli111From personal experience. People are much more likely to have an emergency at the home while away on vacation then have the "authorities" break in to steal guns, ammo, food or the generator. Marauders or authorities will shoot the deadbolt with a slug or bust in a window or bust doors off of hinges. In 60 plus years I've seen neighbors shut off the water because suddenly the sump was flowing, or see the furnace suddenly start smoking bad or know that with the power out the water main needed to be shut off, or a medical emergency with the doors locked and emergency personnel needing access. Yah, I've seen all that. I've also seen people leave the house to go to work and leave their keys on the kitchen table. Never seen authorities of marauders ask the neighbor for a key. Please, we are supposed to live prepared, not cowering in fear. Please discuss this fear you have with your pastor, wife, therapist or someone.
@yli1112 ай бұрын
@@phild8095 I appreciate your reply and insight. Let me assure you, I fear no one. I would only suggest that, despite all the kindness you have witnessed in 60 years, people will behave differently during what is coming. To see how much you can rely on the "authorities," just google what is going on right now in Aurora, CO, where Venezuelan immigrants are terrorizing people in several apt complexes. This is only 9 miles away from Denver, where my grandson lives. Their governor? He says people are just imagining it. Mr. Trump trusted his Secret Service "good guys." It almost cost him his life. You get the idea. No one is breaking into my house, at least before I can administer several doses of lead poisoning to them... the doors have bulldog bars, and all windows are either bricked up or protected with burglar bars, along with shatterproof film. The new roof is fire resistant. But, to each his own. Go ahead and enjoy your false sense of security within your tight little virtue-signaling community. Stay frosty.

Most important is to study your local criminal law, and understand what circumstances is the extend of force being used justified as self defense. Have security cameras to record footage of the incident as evidence. Creeky floor was used to deter Ninja back in feudal Japan, instead of paving carpet to mask the sound of footsteps. Wind chimes at entrance, with long hanging accessories. Bead curtains with bells can look innocent enough, but will detect anyone walking past a doorway. Wind chimes/ bells attached to windows, with different sound for each window. Christmas decorations could serve a purpose for security. Solar powered outdoor light aimed at curtained window will cast shadow of whatever walking pass outside. There are security measures that doesn't looks like you are supposed to avoid until you trip over them. And unless you are very mindful you wouldn't know the owner is already alerted to your presence. Most of them doesn't require power to keep operational.

@@jay_chang Hey Jay, you’ve once again shared some really clever and practical tips! Understanding your local criminal laws is crucial-it’s important to know when and how self-defense is legally justified. Security cameras are a must for capturing evidence, but I love how you’ve highlighted low-tech solutions too. Things like creaky floors, wind chimes, and bead curtains with bells can be subtle yet effective ways to alert you to intruders without relying on power. Even using solar-powered lights to cast shadows is a great idea. These measures blend right into the home, so they don’t draw attention, but they still provide an extra layer of security. Consider having your new strong front door open out instead of in... it's the classic Florida way our old homes had their doors so a strong hurricane will push the door shut harder then trying to open the door.
@reliableprepper2 ай бұрын
That’s a great tip! Having your front door open out instead of in is a smart way to add extra security, especially in places prone to strong winds like Florida. It makes sense that a door that opens outward would be harder for someone to force open and can even help during extreme weather by using the wind’s force to keep the door shut. It’s a simple change that can make a big difference in both security and safety. Thanks for sharing this!
@Scarredfan2 ай бұрын
@@reliableprepper it's the first thing I had done when we bought our new home in 2011. Front door replacement with a very formidable one and opening outward with hinges that cannot be used against it opening. Our door, when shut is similar to a safe door. It has steel pegs on the hinge side that close into the frame so the hinges cannot be removed and even if cut off the door cannot be opened that way.
@steveturansky90312 ай бұрын
I'd rather bolster the door with braces and bars on the interior, with a door that opens inward. A big risk with an outward opening door is debris (accidental or intentional) blocking the door shut from the outside.

1. Yes you can throw something like a hatchet or a tomahawk but it is not at all as easy as what some people make it out to be. For that to be any kind of viable you actually have to know how to do it. 2. If you're using a flashlight especially one with a strobe function in any defensive manner I suggest utilizing the flash bash and dash strategy. Basically what that is is you flash them with your hopefully very bright flashlight preferably the strobe function for a couple of seconds then assuming the flashlight is sizable enough you then bash them or strike them with it. And finally you dash as in you run away. And hopefully the attacker will be disoriented long enough for you to put some distance between you and them thus rendering you more or less safe. 3. No matter what sort of weapon or tool you use in a defensive manner don't be the guy who gets way too hung up on the item being taken from them somehow and then being used against them. Yes that can happen but that's just an inherent risk you need to be aware and accepting of. That's also why you have other plans or contingencies in place should something like that happen.
@reliableprepper2 ай бұрын
You’ve shared some great, down-to-earth advice here. Throwing something like a hatchet or tomahawk might look cool in movies, but in reality, it takes a lot of practice to do it right. It’s definitely not as easy as it seems. I really like the "flash, bash, and dash" strategy with a flashlight-using the strobe function to disorient someone and then making your escape is a smart way to protect yourself. It’s simple but effective. And you’re spot on about not worrying too much about your weapon being taken and used against you. It’s a risk, sure, but that’s why it’s important to have backup plans and not rely on just one tool or strategy. Being prepared for different scenarios is what really matters. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Burglar deterrence. One of the most idiotic concepts ever invented. Sending them on their way means another person in your community, or a close allied neighbor is then victimized. You lose that asset. If this is the scenario that it says it is, you shoot to kill, you arm to eliminate, you set traps for fatal results. Allow me to give my 2c. Squared away and fortified buildings are not always a deterrent. As a matter of fact, for some, it makes them more attractive depending on the circumstance. If law enforcement is actually operating then yes, that is a good plan. In a SHTF scenario, no LEOs safeguarding you, I would not be mowing my lawn. As a matter of fact, I might even break some of my windows, spray paint the outside of my house and scatter some furniture and clothes on the outside if I was staying there to give the appearance that the house was already looted. But I must say, you (and you are not alone amongst the 100s of other people making like videos) missed one of the most important parts. Egress... What good is any of that if you cannot escape. If someone wants in, all they have to do is set your place on fire. Its worked for 1000s of years in warfare. Take Waco as an example... They held off the feds for a while, they even managed to kill a few. Once they pushed that tank barrel through the wall and sprayed some gasoline on the inside, it was over. Guess what the people on the inside didn't have? Egress plan. All the provisions, guns and ammo, fancy equipment is useless against fire. Have a fancy panic room that is fireproof? Air has to get in there somehow. Diesel fuel down the vents make for a bad day.

@@18B_Porta-Poty_PTSD It largely depends on the severity level of chaos the society has descended into, what you are describing is basically war time scenario. The criminal law could change accordingly, or war time law could apply, so more drastic measures such as snare and traps which would be illegal during peace time might be allowed or the lack of law enforcement leading to everyone fending for themselves. The whole topic, and ethical debate that would go into the Geneva convention on humane etiquette in war would be quite controversial to elaborate on. But the Geneva convention only apply to military personnel. Looters and rioters are not protected by the convention.

You bring up some really valuable points. A fortified building can sometimes attract more attention in a SHTF scenario, especially if it looks like it has resources worth taking. Your idea of making a home look already looted is a clever way to deter potential intruders when law enforcement isn’t around. But you hit the nail on the head with egress-it’s one of the most critical parts of any defense plan. No matter how well-prepared or fortified you are, if you can’t get out in an emergency, you’re in a bad spot. Fire has been a tactic for centuries, and without a solid escape route, all those preparations can quickly become useless. Having multiple ways out and being ready to leave everything behind is essential. Thanks for sharing this-it’s a crucial reminder that sometimes the best defense is a good escape plan.
