Mind = blown. Had Sir William Buthorn for 6 years and he got jammed and would not work. Our relationship ended and I felt I was seeing other pencils. It was clearly an unhealthy relationship. I was devasted and william started rusting and hanging out with other broken pencils. It was a bad crowd for him. I felt like his life was heading to the garbage. Now that have seen this video William has made a full recovery. Now I can use him where ever. I'm not ashamed to take him out in public cuz our relationship is not in a ..... jam anymore but I think we have made our.. point. 😄 so to.. draw a conclusion we have a healthy relationship and the future can be... written to our desires. Thank You,

Sometimes jams can further back in the channel that those tiny lead jam clearing rods just won't reach. I've found the perfect remedy for that -- piano wire. The thinnest come in a diameter that is smaller than 0.5mm, so you can get a segment of that and snake it through the channel. This is essential for clearing up lead dust that may have caked up in the channel, as will tend to happen with older pencils.

My GraphGear 500 0.5 gets a lead jam beacause the lead breaks then it gets stuck in the tip. This stops the lead from coming out.

If the lead is jammed in tight, a clearing rod simply will not work. The solution is to use a sewing needle (a proper tool) which is MUCH tougher than the flimsy cleaning rods. The needle should be ROUGHLY THE RIGHT DIAMETER (0.5/0.7 etc) in order to keep it straight when you pass it through the tip-guide. Whilst keeping the button depressed, use the needle's notoriously sharp & hard point to gradually destroy the lead until it all shakes out as dust. When the needle will pass right though the clutch AND you can see light right through the pencil, thoroughly clean it out tapping it a few times to shake the dust free. BLOW THROUGH THE PENCIL WHILST OPENING AND CLOSING THE CLUTCH A FEW TIMES, and it should be as good as new. With a cheap pencil you have a small risk of damaging a plastic clutch but most good pencil clutches are metal.

Hello! I have a Mechanical pencil from Muji which takes 0.3mm lead. My question is, should I be able to see through the whole at the tip of the pencil when I remove it? I believe there is a jam in the head because I can not manually insert 0.3mm lead into the head of the pencil even when it is detached. What do you recommend I do?

@ClutchSituation

That's usually really bad news. It probably means you have a clutch not fully engaging, or really heavy coating of lead dust on the clutch. If you can replace the mechanism, that is the best option. Of course, not all pencils allow that.

I know this comment is old but you can take a twist tie that you can get at your local grocery store and remove the outside paper until you uncover a tiny thin rod. Or you can use a single staple. So you have to stick it in the tip of your pencil and try to push out the lead. Push as hard as you can. Once the rod goes through then take out the extra pieces of lead form the Bach of your pencil.

You need to find a strong metal wire that is thinner than the internal diameter of the lead sleeve that won't bend and want impale you if you jam it in there. I have the opposite problem....the lead comes down, but then as soon as I try to write with it, it shoots straight back up into the channel....

I have like 6 pentel P207s now all jammed. Pentel no longer supplies cleaning tool. WTF ?

Nothing personal intended, but this shouts user error to me. I don't know what your habits/maintenance are like, but if you have six jammed P200 mechanisms I feel pretty strongly that it is a "you problem." Another alternative would be that you bought them all from the same batch and it was a faulty batch. Stuff happens in manufacturing. The Orenz Nero clearly had a bad batch upon release, for example.

@@ClutchSituation Family of 5 we all them, my wife bought a 10 package years back. As they fail we'd use new ones. Just got them unclogged pain in the ass had to file a safety pin to reduce diameter. Why did pentel stop shipping clog tool ?! Serious Q: what maintenance do these require ? Been using these for 30 years, when they had tool I never complained.

Try to get it just right. If it's too thick it won't slide through. If it's too too thin it won't pop out obstructions.
