This video you will learn how to use a circular saw and how to prevent kick back. Making a cut on your material between two supporting points will cause a pressure point between your material and the saw blade which will cause the saw to kick back.

Thank you for explaining so clearly! I had a kickback and found your video, you probably save my hand/fingers. My dad passed away and I was just using his saw to cut up old wood he has in the garage for disposal. He never taught me how to use the saw, I am just imitating what I remember he was doing, obviously there are a lot of safety details that I do not know. I better learn more before continuing.

What I learnt from another video was clamp your cutting piece down onto 2 3x4 inch thick pieces of timber situated underneath (so your main piece is raised) and on either side of the cut line so they support the piece and prevent any pinching. Hold both handles on the saw & position your body so you're not in line with it i.e. cut from side.

Good video thank you , ive also read that you really should set the depth of cut on the saw to help avoid this
@allskills2298
@allskills2298 4 жыл бұрын
Yes setting the depth definitely helps. Always set the depth 1/4 inch more than the thickness of the material you are cutting. That way if the saw does kick back it will also help reduce the risk of injury because the guard has a shorter distance to spring back and cover the blade of the saw
@evolute99
@evolute99 3 жыл бұрын
@@allskills2298 i tried cutting on the outside of a saw horse but still had kickback. I was cutting some base bored with a smaller circular saw. I would get about a 3/4 of the way through the cut and the blade would stop. I kept trying to force it and it kept kicking back. I finally gave up and used a hand saw to complete the cut but it splintered the board and ruined the cut. I thought maybe my blade was dull. Now I’m thinking the depth of the blade maybe 1-2 deeper than the board. I was hesitant to try the saw again but I may give it another shot and change the depth to 1/4. Any thoughts why it would pinch on the outside the sawhorse other than flimsy board and blade depth?
@allskills2298
@allskills2298 3 жыл бұрын
@@evolute99this is a great question. The first thing I will suggest is to not cut any mouldings using a circular saw. It's much more difficult to keep your cuts straight as it's easy for the blade to wander. You can rent a miter saw at home depot for as little as $36 USD a day. There are 2 things happening here making the saw kick back. 1. If you are making a 45 degree bevel cut to the short point with the good side of your baseboard facing up then the "kick back point" will actually be pushing to the bottom of the saw. (I will make a video for this soon) 2. Because the material is thin, this makes it easy for the blade of the saw to wander slightly and it's difficult to keep your saw cutting straight. This ends up causing the blade of the saw to twist while cutting resulting in the saw binding and kick back. To minimize this you would be correct in adjusting the depth of your saw to even 1/8th inch deeper than your material thickness. This will not necessarily correct the twisting of the saw blade. Only minimize it. The saw can still kick back in this position. Try cutting with the long point of your 45 degree bevel cut facing up.

@@adamthewoodworker2571 cutting from the ground is also useful. It takes a bit more time to learn and get comfortable with. I have a video for cutting from the floor in the "tool safety" on my channel. I recommend checking it out! As for cutting foam insulation with a circular saw professionals can do this if they choose but I wouldn't recommend it unless you are very confident with the circular saw. It is easy for your wrist to turn just slightly with the saw and the saw will kick back.

Useful demonstration of a kick-back. Missing & important: eye-protection, checking the blade guard is back in place and saw stopped moving before putting saw on the ground (major toe hazard), making sure no body part is behind the blade when cutting -- thigh, body, fingers, toes (some people cut on the floor with the toes behind the blade when cutting).

you didn't say what to do if it does kick back...immediately stop the saw or keep it going? Because even if everything is set up right it can catch.
@allskills2298
@allskills2298 3 жыл бұрын
If everything is set up right it won't catch unless you are twisting the saw as you cut. A saw kicks back so fast you don't have any control over the saw. Your natural instincts will be to take your finger off immediately as having your saw spinning at full speed and having no control is extremely dangerous. After a kick back happens: 1. Check that the material is set up right and there is no pressure points. 2. Check the depth of your saw to be no more than 1/8th inch deeper than the material you are cutting 3. Start cutting again and be aware of twisting the saw while you cut (You can even unplug the saw and check the blade for any damage. It would be rare to damage the blade when cutting wood but it could happen)

@@allskills2298 Thank you for the reply. However, you just supply more evidence why your vid needs redoing. You really are saying you have no time for safety in every operation of a powerful circular saw? That is, you have no time to be mindful of all the precautions needed EVERY time you pick up that dangerous tool. It is like saying you have no time to obey all the different speed limit signs encountered multiple times each day! It is called SAFETY for a reason. How much time will you save recuperating from a ripped tendon or nerve? How about the loss of a thumb - that alone will give you all the free time in the world away from a building site? What about a flying saw hitting a work mate? You have no time to consider the wellbeing of others? If you have not the time to safeguard your own safety, then how can anyone trust you to be mindful of doing a good job on each and every task that goes into construction? Do you have the time to give full and proper care to each and every one of those tasks for a customer? Or, does “No worries - she'll be right, mate.” become the moral? No wonder building sites are some of the most dangerous locations in the economy. It is not always faulty tools causing death and accidents - it’s the faulty thinking of operators. As far as your stated belief that only novices should use clamps, that is just another indication of your irresponsibility. How many experienced builders have seriously injured themselves by not clamping material? (Please do not ruin your credibility any further by saying, “None”.) Please change your vid to something more valuable and responsible by including best practice procedure.

And never use a circular saw with a wobbly blade/bent shaft. It ain't worth it, cut the cord off and throw it in the trash. Why do I say this? I had a buddy working on a job site pick up his boss's spare saw to cut 2 by fours for framing. As he was being loaded into the ambulance the boss said maybe I should have thrown that saw away because the blade wobbled a bit.

Sorry but it is not true, if you let the part free falling, yes it would work most of the times, but if your piece of wood is thinner than what you have in the video, the saw blade go through the wood, as the cut going, the free falling part is going to clamp the blade from bottom because its tilting downwards, causing a kick back
@jeremybolduc7171
@jeremybolduc7171 2 жыл бұрын
Worked as a carpenter for 16 years. Never has that happened. What's actually happening when you cut thin pieces of wood is that the saw is easier to move from your line as you cut and this will cause kick back because the blade is twisting as you cut. That's why it's important to set the depth and practice.
@gachagameplayer2143
@gachagameplayer2143 2 жыл бұрын
@@jeremybolduc7171 I mean its the same issue but the free falling part can clamp the blade from lower part when the free falling part bend the wood upwards, instead when the video only talk about the most binding happens when the wood is bending downwards. You never met it, but it happens to others.
@jeremybolduc7171
@jeremybolduc7171 2 жыл бұрын
@@gachagameplayer2143 how thick is the material you are speaking of? Because the end you cut off will fall towards the ground unless you are turning the saw as you cut. It's crucial to keep a straight line as you cut thinner material and deviance from the line and yes it will kick back.
@Jackthebitch
@Jackthebitch 10 ай бұрын
You are absolutely correct. It pinches even worse if the piece you are cutting is long, because it starts to hang and pushes against the blade, creating a pinch at the bottom this time. The best way to never get any kickback is to make sure the whole piece, even the part that should fall, is supported so that no movement occurs during the cut.
