That gravel vacuum video really DID help me big time. Somehow the points that you made to make it work never were covered by other videos on other channels. Love your videos and support the store.

Having a well established tank makes a huge difference. I just setup a tank about 7 months ago with sand and old stones and plants, added shrimp and snails after a month and waited 5 months to add fish. I have no filter just a large light designed for hanging in a garage.

Great video but I would have like to see you show in a pic what you mean by green water, cloudy water etc. I would love to show it to my friends and family to help them. I also believe you are spot on I hate using chemicals in my tank when it could be fixed by just changing a little bit of water or watching it overtime or gravel back in the right way thanks again for all you do

When you remove the tannins from the water with purigen does it remove the health benefits and chemical effects or are the coloring agent and the active chemical separate?

Such a great video Cory. So often we are closing the barn door after the horse gets out or basically chasing our tails. I’ve tried to set up my new 65 gallon with all those tips in mind and 2 months in, it is looking good so far.

Thanks. Always good to hear some of the basics as a reminder to keep the maintenance up. Letting things slide too long can lead to trouble.

How do the different cloudiness causes impact fish?

I feel like part of this video is from my post on facebook about keeping some of y'alls sponges on my filters and swapping some to a finer sponge. Gotta say having the mix in sponges works a charm but the big winner is the lift tubes from y'all. That extra current keeps my substrate cleaner so when the mollys go digging for MORE food there isn't any junk to cloud the water. I really wish y'all offered 2 sponge types. The OG that is very open for great flow and less cleaning needed AND then a medium dense for more polishing. I've found the mediums do just as well as the super fines for sponge based polishing and the super fines clog VERY quickly with poo.

Perfect timing. Just cleaned my tank. It has aqua soil so there’s no gravel to clean but yea, tank is looking pretty rough.

Awesome video! I'm getting ready to set up a 40gal breeder and I was going to use fluval substrate and flourite black sand gravel in fine mesh bags and cap with fourite black sand, is this a bad idea??

Hope someone has the answer: but I recently set up a new tank with activ flora substrate and there’s this white fluffy particles settling on the surface of the tank. I’m running a sponge filter and I do have a single piece of recycled wood from the previous set up. Is this considered a bacterial bloom ?

I have definitely found the need to fix cloudy water from time to time. But I also try to figure out WHY it is cloudy in the first place and address that as soon as possible so I'm not in a constant battle with poly fil, Purigen, cleaning filters, clarifiers, etc. Some of the REAL fixes might take a little time to see results, but pays off in the long run. Almost nothing goes bad immediately, so almost nothing is fixed in the same time frame. A little time, knowledge, and patience will fix most problems. It's really only a bummer when you've got company coming tomorrow...hahahaha

Is there a reason no one mentions using a diatom filter? I used to use it and never experienced anything negative and I used to get compliments all of the time for how crystal clear my tank was. I used it sparingly, only if the tank became noticeably cloudy. It worked amazingly. Cheers.

Use a large filter pad they come in black for ponds in cover the whole bottom of the tank you can make the back as thick as you want in the front is thin and that really works well and the clown roaches no fish can dig in and plants will root in it easily

I struggle with adding root tabs without making a HUGE mess in my water column. I have tweezers and I've seen aquarists just plop those root tabs right into the substrate and they stay put easy-peasy. For me, it's constantly coming undone, floating to the top, and i have to practically dig a hole and hold the tab there while I use my other hand to cover it. My root tabs and tweezers are from Aquarium co-op, but I haven't added any new ones in a while because of the mess I make; it really knocks out my little filter. But I'm beginning to worry that my Valisneria and Crypt are not getting the nutrients they need. Any advice?

Conversely, do any of you know of water column plants that grow quickly? I've tried water lettuce before but that wouldn't stop melting.

The type of fish that you have has alot to do with it... . little fish are easier to have clear water over big fish.. They will eat the small food particles that large fish wont.... And gravel is a major problem VRS bare bottom.
