We have been dealing with mice. It is a nightmare. The foam insulation doesn't work. They will chew through it. I use steel wool and caulking. Sealed around all areas under camper and any place inside. I even had to use sheet metal to cover holes under slideouts. I had a name brand exterminator come and it did nothing. They caught a few, and I had to clean up the mess, but they never filled any holes. I found them after they visited. Payed a ton of money. I really like the light thing. I will be adding that to our camper and any others we purchase in the future. I recommend filling holes with steel wool or mesh an caulking. I never had any luck with any of the human traps. Also we have tried the peppermint, dryer sheets, all the repellents. Spent hundreds of dollars. Nothing worked. They even made a nest with the stuff. Best thing is to cover every area they can get in. Another thing we never had any food out everything was covered or went into the fridge anything editable. Sugar, candy, chips etc. Good Luck to all.

I just bought a 22' winnebago Itasca spirit. After watching your video about mice issues, I thought I'd share my idea/theory. Using heavy grease, rub undercarriage (pumping pipes, rear axle.... you get the idea). Mice has nothing to grab onto. I also thought of sprinkling Diatomaceous around all four tires. It works great up here in big bear. No ants, spiders, other crawling insects. in my cabin. JUST A THOUGHT

Great tips! Shall try some this year. Last year was my first RV trailer adventure. Tried the plastic humane traps at first. Was amazingly hilarious how quickly they learned to 'have a trantrum' which shook the trap apart. Got a gravity-drop-and-lock trap after that with peanut butter as bait. Caught a mouse every night for 4 weeks straight (48 mice for the season). Located 2 nests and stopped up openings around 10 access points. Final 6 weeks had NO mice! Going down in another week to the rented trailer; already heard there is 'mouse sign' there. We'll see how well my new insights work this year. Great blog, thanks.

Great tips! Thank you!! I'm with you about the inexpensive wooden snap traps. I used those in my tent when I was deployed. I put all of my snacks in ZipLock bags, and then into Tupperware containers. Before I used the Tupperware containers all of the area's mice thought my tent was a food bar! I put out a dozen traps, replaced them when they had caught a mouse, and eventually went through less than 2 dozen traps. Never had another mouse. ZipLock bags placed inside of Tupperware containers. That was my trick.

AStreaminLife - My husband and I are very new at RVing [as in never did it before], our factory ordered motor home won't ship for a while yet, which has given me time to look for answers to many concerns. Many tips posted by other RVers confirmed what I had already concluded, most other tips were extremely helpful and then there were the 'light bulb goes on' tips. Two things I cannot tolerate are rodents and anything with more than four legs invading our space so right now we're down to how to keep mice and bugs out of the house on wheels. We just bought our current house last June which in one many subdivisions in the area built on acres of what used to be farmland, the houses moved in but the mice didn't move out. We've had an issue in the attached garage and tried the humane traps, nope. We tried the 'tried and true' snap traps, nope. We tried the black glue boards placed along the base of the walls, success! We felt bad because it's a bad way to die until we saw one in the house and it was war. On advice of the local garden center, don't use spray foam because they'll chew thru it, we went thru the entire house plugging any little hole and gap with steel wool and mission accomplished. When we take delivery of the house on wheels we'll do the same but we still don't want mice crawling up the tires to get in, especially into the engine compartment and hadn't found an answer until we found a comment from one of viewers. LOVE the rope light idea, another 'light bulb goes on' tip!! We have to be very care about what we use inside because we're planning to take Tazzy, our 1 year old Chihuahua Tasmanian Devil puppy along for the rides, and the breed is 'very busy'. Also her vet said no ultrasonic electronic pest devices because it could/may damage her hearing. We plan to place a glue board and a stick of the green mice poison in every exterior storage bay as well as the exterior utility/dump bay. Now, what have got about dealing with keeping bugs out, I'm a 63 year old guy terrified of spiders. NICE video, thank you!!

Steel wool plugging any opening under to camper to keep them out. Old fashioned traps to take care of those already in. I appreciate the humane approach to removing mice, but bubonic plague and hantavirus are serious issues and the problem should be solved quickly. @@StampinJo Go the hardware store and purchase 00 to 0004 stainless steel wool. Stuff it in the holes and any area where an electric or water line enters your rv. Steel wool will not rust. You can use steel wool (not SOS pads) stuffed into openings from the inside of the RV. Mice will not chew through it or try to squeeze past it. You will find it in big packages in the paint section of home stores. They don't like the feel of it. I use it in my RV and around openings that go to the crawlspace from inside my house. Seems to stop them coming in. I always have traps set, too. They will chew through insulation. Not sure light is what is keeping them away. I live in Alaska and in summer we have 24 hours of daylight and the critters are running around in the garden, etc. during that time. We see them all the time. Thanks for the video.

Thank you for light tip. I will try that. I currently use Irish spring original scent soap. This works, I have been told, same as peppermint oil. Mice hate smell. I used wire wool and insulating foam to close up holes. I cut up a few bars of soap in 1/4s. I put these in the engine and in what I considered vulnerable places. That was a total of 4 bars of soap. I bought 20 bars for $21 on amazon. I then took 6 bars in their boxes and poked holes in the boxes to release scent. Placed them around 20ish foot campervan. If you cannot tell. I hate mice. I then got solar light bulb. Put an oil ring on it and put peppermint oil in it. Van has been sitting now with these things in place. I do not see any sign of mice. Just a thought to add to the discussion: I personally believe the old wooden and metal traps are a humane solution simply because they kill the mice very quickly. I have watched many videos of keeping rodents out of your camper, but NOT ONE talks about how mice have to "jump" almost 2ft in the first place to get in the camper. So, why not catch the mice to prevent them from climbing? Glue traps can be placed around tires and jack stabalizers. A mouse cannot jump 2ft onto the underbelly, they have to climb up something, be it the tire, the stabilizer, or electric wire and sewage lines. If you were to stick glue traps all around the areas, the mice wouldn't be able to get in the first place. So you would have to use a strong double sided tape to stick to the bottom of the rectangular glue trap. Stick that around each tire, each stabilizer and around the water and electric hook ups. Just to be sure, stick glue traps all over the underbelly.

Based on what our landscaper told us when we bought our house last June, DO NOT waste time or money on spray foam insulation because mice WILL chew thru it. NEVER stuff a hole with fiberglass insulation because the mice WILL take it to pad their nests. The most effective thing to use is steel wool because mice CAN'T chew thru it. The larger black glue boards along the perimeter walls, they can't see it at night when they travel, and the green poison sticks, be VERY CAREFUL if you have pets or kids, are both very effective. Any hole or gap as small as a pencil is a main entry for mice. We're RV Newbies and plan to take the time once our new motor home arrives to do the same thing.

I had a hell of a year with rodents. A 5 gallon bucket pit trap took care of the packrats that got in. I've used several different traps for mice and the ones that have worked the best are the rat sized sticky traps. I use them both in the RV and the winery.

Those traps are inhumane. Rodents are sentient beings. In New Mexico there were pack rats IN my Explorer that were caught with Hav-a-Heart traps and I let them go way down the mesa by a river. Pack rats are actually very pretty. I've also killed rats and mice with snap traps which are mostly quick and easy. I lived across from a winery in Oregon and again, the snap traps did the trick. Please don't use sticky traps.

On one episode could you show how you guys installed the rope light in the closed underbelly (if that's where you placed them) and how you wired them. I'm sure there are some that have/are using mothballs, not a good idea.
@Joe-cu4hi7 жыл бұрын
David Dube' I think they just stretched the rope light across the bottom of camper on ground. I've seen that done by many rv'ers but thought it was just decoration
@AStreaminLife7 жыл бұрын
We just strung them along the ground under the trailer and since it's solar we just need to make sure we place the solar panel somewhere (front or back of the Airstream) that gets good sun. Takes about 2 minutes to do it every time we setup camp. We'll show it in a future video.

Interesting about the upper cabinets and oven. I'm guessing we should keep the cat dishes up high. (Planning to have places for the cats to explore high up, anyway) Did you ever accidentally burn mice in the oven...? Eeps.
@AStreaminLife5 жыл бұрын
Haha nope no burning of mice in the oven but I needed to clean it really really well before we cooked in it again.

Do those ultra sonic repel devices affect dogs or cats?
@AStreaminLife7 жыл бұрын
We don't know ourselves but looking it up "Most ultrasonic mouse repellers are safe for household pets such as dogs and cats which aren't affected by the ultrasonic sounds that the device emits. However, the sound can distress domesticated rodents such as rabbits and hamsters."
@justamom8637 жыл бұрын
Ours dont bother our dog at all. We have never had any pest problems using them and we leave our rig parked near a meadow for extended periods of time.
@alignmentexpert37873 жыл бұрын
When storing your RV, unless you have AC power connected, how will you power the ultrasonic devices? I have to store my RV in a storage lot that does not offer electric power.

I have had the best luck using a cotton ball with some vanilla extract on it with the old fashioned mouse trap to catch the mouse. Then, stuffing steel wool in any open areas. We just moved in to our camper while we build our house. This is our first camper and we just finished our first week. (50 yr old rookies). I think we heard a squirrel on the roof last night. Any suggestions???

@bruceh37866 жыл бұрын
I do not know about the peppermint, but I have tried moth balls. Some field mice built a grass nest on top of the warm engine block of my truck while on a fall mountain camping trip. So I went into town that morning and bought a bunch of moth balls. That evening a put them in a paper bag cut with a bunch of holes and placed the bag on the top of the engine before closing the hood. Well, the next morning I opened the hood to check for mice and there was a brand new grass nest ...... right on top of the paper bag with the moth balls!

I don't know if anyone will have any luck with this but I am starting to leave some tuna fish outside every night to attract some of the ferral cats in my area so that they learn to hangout and kill the mice.

Hate to be a buzzkill, but if you research the numerous experiments about repelling mice performed by many different entities, you will find that while light will repel some animals, it has proven to not be effective against mice. Also, the sonic sound devices have shown to have no effect at all on repelling mice. The various scent repellants; Cab Fresh, peppermint oils, dryer sheets and even mothballs have shown little to no impact on repelling mice. The only tactics that have proven effective are to seal up all of the possible entry holes in your unit as best you can and then set kill traps on the ground under your unit. Use traps that kill, not the humane traps. I have to laugh out loud when I watch a video of RV owners catching mice inside their units using live traps and then taking them outside and letting them go. Those mice just discovered a great shelter to hide from the weather, from predators and with food to eat to boot! They will come right back to that 5 Star hotel as soon as the sun goes down!!
@AStreaminLife7 жыл бұрын
Hi Terry! As awesome as that research might be, the lights have worked tremendously for us. My folks, who full-time RV'ed for 13 years, starting using those sonic sound devices and didn't have *a single mouse* after using them. Research is a wonderful thing, but if it works, it works! :) Also, hilarious about letting the mouse go. Not sure what you expect when you release the guy back into the wild so he can do it all over again.
@terrydody65907 жыл бұрын
Yes, best to try everything!! I do! Doesn't cost much to go the extra mile, and if it keeps just one of those varmints out and stops any damage they might do, it's worth the effort and small cost. The point of my earlier commits was just to say be aware that there are no magic bullets when it comes to keeping out rodents.
@Joe-cu4hi7 жыл бұрын
Terry, I'm with you! Millions and millions of mice breeding and birthing 10 or more baby mice every 3 weeks!!! They need to die! When we got 5 in our 19' camper I felt like hanging the dead little guys outside to show other mice not to even think about it 😜
@nancyhowlandwalker94704 жыл бұрын
Being Buddhist, we tru not to kill anything. We use humane traps and they work great! No, we do NOT release the little cuties right outside our RV, but take them a few miles away so they can't find their way back.

I love animals, but Mice? They are plenty of them that using death traps will not hurt the ecological environment. The sticky traps are the best! Sealing the entry points makes more sense than anything else.

Sorry Courtney but most of your tips we've tried and they do not work..we bought those electronic gadgets and plugged them in...caught a number of mice in traps right beside those pricey gadgets...food in plastic containers..nope mice can still smell that food and will chew into the plastic...mothballs work great but yuck.nobody likes the smell including us....we are now trying peppermint oil and menthol crystals..so far so good.. tea tree oil works great too but if you have pets in your rv they say not to use it

@@AStreaminLife We really like the light under the trailer hint...that makes sense!! Thanks for sharing it! Going to give that a whirl.. read another hint yesterday that suggested using minty fresh Listerine sprayed where mice have been to disinfect the area and get rid of that nasty, musky mouse odour. Plan to pour a bottle of peppermint extract in the Listerine before spraying the basement of our 5th wheel. Can't wait to see the last of those nasty little poop machines

light under the trailer re sort of rude to your neighbors, dontchathink?
@AStreaminLife6 жыл бұрын
Less than a light on the side of the trailer from what we can tell (like a porch or step light). The light doesn't extend more than a foot past the bottom of the trailer. Like a low glow underneath. Less than a streetlight or something. Generators are much ruder and more disturbing....and no way to ban those :)

I had mice in my RV ceiling space no access points through speakers or lights, the RV was built to well darn it so what I had to do was cut a 3 inch hole in the microwave compartment ceiling with a hole saw I installed glue traps on top of the microwave and put it back in its opening until the dirty deed was done. This hole is now available for a reoccurrence and a cover plate screwed over it is not visible from the living area ! Found the access point it was the furnace roof vent , my solar panel installer had cut a large hole in the screen and never re-meshed the opening, GRRRRR !
