I do my nails with this method. The reason your paint clumped and came away on the tie and clumped up on your cups is because you let it sit too long. The paint drys out on top and therefore it will clump and work right. Clumping has nothing to do with the distance in which you spray the paint. Also, if you notice all the air bubbles you have on top of the water? Those are going to cause a rough texture and clumping as well. If you take a spray bottle filled with 90% rubbing alcohol and spray the top of the paint it will pop all those bubbles. You have to work really quickly with this method or you are going to have a rough finish. Also, your water needs to be quite warm never cold. cold water makes the paint seize. One more tip/trick...instead of using spray paint, you can use watered down acrylic paint or you can use nail polish and both will eliminate your problems and you can stir intricate designs into you paint before dipping. :)

Thank you so much for showing this tip... I am new to epoxy tumblers etc and was almost in tears today as to why my paint kept clumping on my tumbler that I was hydro dipping. Thank you again for showing me what I was doing wrong. Blessings

Decided to give this a go today, had a few clumpy runs, where the paint didn’t go on evenly and had lots of water bubbles, depending on the surface of what you’re dipping, a coat of primer will help the paint stick, but as far as the bubbles go, I’m still trying to fix that. Your method didn’t work for me, I sprayed from further away and got more solid patterns, and it didn’t clump, whereas when I sprayed close like you did, the paint went on 3 times thicker and less uniform, could have to do with the quality of the paint, or simply the items being dipped. Definitely a fun (and messy) experiment to try at home either way

Works real well if you spray the paint into the lid first and then pour the paint into the water.

painting hit the air oxygen was added causing it to somewhat start to dry before it actually hit the water. I finished high in furniture for 20-plus years.

LMFAO THE REASON IT CLUMPED UP WAS BECAUSE YOU TOOK FOR EVER TO DIP. ONCE YOU START SPRAYING THE PAINT STARTS TO DRY. SO BY THE TIME YOU DIPPED THE FIRST BUCKET WAS FULL OF SOMEWHAT DRY PAINT 😂😂😂😂😂😂

how do you prevent the bubbles on the cup itself.....like the one on the cup where the spray paint was sprayed into the water closely? You have some very interesting and helpful video's.
@MrJpistolz

You can't really prevent the bubbles but if you spray some rubbing alcohol on there after you dip the bubbles will go away.

The problem is not due to the distance you spray the paint from the water. The issue is the temperature of the water. You want to use cold water when when hydrodipping with spray paint.

From further Away The paint is Act Drying In The Air Its traveling Thru! & Yes Sitting In The water Especially warmer Water Dries the paint 1st clumpier! Clumping From The Can Means Your Nozzle is Dirty/Semi-Dried Clumpy Crap Blocking The Nozzle Of Which the fresh paint Coming Out of the Nozzle Picks It Up as it sprays. & DIP fast which is Difficult If you drop 3-6 Colors In The water = 2 Trained dippers Are Best Just doing It Chain Reaction Style. & Borax Laundry Soap (Roughly 1.5 Tablespoons Per gallon & Trial & Error Bcz Chemicalized shitty Water right from The tap Changes the whole Reactionary process) Added In The water ( To make Paint Stay Totally afloat Above said water!) Makes a difference as does water temp, Air temp & Humidity, Yep each on is a science Project In Itself! & Other suggestions below , too!, Happy Dipping accordingly!!!

well you can also brush aside the paint before you pull it out and you won't get the clumping as well

It was not a fair comparison, in the first bucket you waited a little too long and we know that causes the paint to react different! On the second bucket you got right to it, didn't give it enough time to have to paint react as did the first!!!

Your advise of shooting paint from close bubbling water messed up my project. I'm going to spray different colors of spray paint separately into cups, then pour into ice cube tray tilted, with other side of tray drilled with tiny holes so all paint drips out quickly, separately, controlled and close to water. Colors can drip out with no bubbling up the water or starting to dry as paint goes through air, swirl, dip, swish, pull, done.

Hey Ryan... Just had a thought with paint clumping. I'm just trying this out so maybe you'd have a better eye and experience to see if this would matter on a similar test. Most directions for spray paint say not to use below a certain temp range. I'm wondering if some people might be using water that is too cold and causing the paint to dry quicker. Any thoughts on this?

+Jay 556 this video was made back in the summer. Plus I was using only rustoleum at that time. Paint temperature is a factor and I like to heat my cans up before using if it's cool outside.

but notice the paint sat LONGER in the taller bucket, and the paint in the shorter bucket didnt really sit as long? I would think it comes out smoother if you dip your item right away after laying the paint on the water, rather than letting the paint sit there and dry a little causing it to pick up more paint. wyt
