Direct injection gasoline engines in general need oil changes very often. Also I have learned that it is crucial to use a good name brand full synthetic oil. Gasoline direct injection engines run hotter and are prone to diluting the oil with fuel. So you really need to keep up with changing spark plugs too. Now before someone says something about the oil you go with a name brand so you get a better additive package in the oil. Another thing I have learned is direct injection engines prefer 93 octane. Yes the ECM absolutely knows what kind of fuel you are running. I'm a mechanic of over ten years and went to a trade school. Just trying to help people out is all, just like this dude. My wife has a 2016 Traverse by the way.
@johnnydrakos6407
@johnnydrakos6407 Жыл бұрын
My understanding is the direct injection system cool the tops of the pistions which is how they were able to up the compression and run 87 octane in an engine that has 11.5-1 compression ratio. The turbo charged engines however do run hotter.
@Hummin_Along
@Hummin_Along Жыл бұрын
@@johnnydrakos6407 Direct injection has nothing to with cooling down combustion. It just gives the ability to make the fuel injection sequence more precise for fuel economy. The only way to cool down combustion is either through fuel by adding more of it or running a cooler burning fuel like ethanol or methenol. The other way is by injecting something like NOS or water into the intake charge. While you can say that about direct injection those are just happy by products. But DI only has a cooling effect because it has not warmed up by coming through the intake ports.

so i got a v6 camaro with the lfx motor and it says to run unleaded but should i run Primmum since its direct injected and the additives would help clean it or would higher grade gas hurt the car. i haven't been able to find a definitive answer so i've been putting premium gas in it once every 3 fill ups

I have a 2004 Cadillac CTS 3.6, first year of the 3.6 with the original style timing chains. In years after GM changed the chains and gears to be quiet. This is when it has the most problems, I believe 2005+. Change oil Mobil 1 10W-30 every 5000 miles for life of car. 229,000 miles, original timing set!

Excellent info. I have a new to me 2013 XTS with 60K - did a Liqui Moly engine flush, then a few miles on an oil change, and then changed again and put in amsoil signature series with a new delco filter. The first oil had been in there about a thousand miles - the dealer did it pre-sale prep. I was ABSOLUTELY SHOCKED at how dark the oil came out, even the second change was dark. Engine is nice and quiet, I'm hoping to get plenty more reliable miles on it. BTW, did a drain and fill on the 6T70 automatic fluid three times - again, shocking how dark the fluid was. Don't neglect these cars - they will bite you back HARD!!

Yep, it's having to clean out a lot. Eventually, the oil after 1k miles will still appear light and transparent like it should. I don't go beyond 3k for an interval.

Great info. I drive a 2013 Lexus ES350 and the oil always looks like it did when I changed it. I'm looking to replace the lexus with a XT6 or GX460. What is the difference between GM & Lexus engines with respect to engine oil color? Thanks,
@Browneye57
@Browneye57 3 ай бұрын
@@kevinmoler4225 Oil color has to do with how much sludge dirt and carbon it keeps in suspension through the detergent process of the oil. If the engine is clean inside then the oil won't get dirty. I imagine the Lexus engine runs cleaner, but all depends on the environment it runs it, it's age, and the frequency of oil changes. The XT6 uses the latest generation of this 3.6L V6, which is much more durable and reliable that earlier iterations. Dirty oil just means it's doing it's job - and any extended interval, say past five or six thousand miles, should begin to get dark from suspended dirt in the oil. I had a 2001 BMW 3-series that would hardly dirty it's oil in 6K miles, once I got the engine cleaned out to begin with. The first owner went 10K on OIC's, so a few flushes and changes and it cleared out the sludge inside. IMO OIC's should not be longer than about 6 or 7K unless you're doing analysis to determine additive package remaining, and to check for any wear indicators. Blackstone is a popular testing lab.

I just bought a Chevy 2024 premier blazer. I’ve had it for a little while now and I drive it to work around 8 to 10 miles a day one-way. I pulled it in my garage and change the oil at 2000 miles and that oil came out really black at 2000 miles so believe it or not I will be changing the oil at every 2000 mile intervals I know that’s excessive but I had a 1987 Chevy pick up with a 350 in it throttlebody injection and I changed you on that every 2000 miles, I had the engine for 425,000 miles and I still have the truck today with the same engine no problems and it doesn’t burn oil. I know the engines different than this one but I will be changing the oil just like that I can’t believe how black the oil got 2000 miles if you could use the GM oil monitor in your car all they want you to do is make sure it gets past the warranty and then you’re on your own. Thanks for your video. I’m sorry about the car but this is what I have now thanks again you really explained it well.

Great advice! My car has a 3.6 LF3 motor, I change the oil religiously at 4000 miles - $60 every few months is way cheaper than $6000 for a motor. I arrived at this conclusion by sending out oil samples to blackstone labs and tracking the oil additives, 3500-4000 is perfect, 4500 if there is some reason I can't do it right away. Granted, my car is a twin turbo which is harder on the oil than a naturally aspirated one, but I'm almost at 100k and my engine looks immaculate inside and the timing chains are in perfect shape.

I have a 2010 Cadillac CTS 3.6. It used oil like crazy. Drilled out the pcv valve a little bigger on both ends. There's specific sizes to drill them out to, so don't just go crazy, look it up and do it correctly. Ever since I did that, it barely uses any at all. Might use a half a quart between oil changes just keeping it at the full line. Actually runs better too. Has a little more response and seemed to gain a little more power after that fix.

GM came up with a new passenger side valve cover gasket that was also to limit the amount of oil sucked into the PVC. The PVC sucks from a section in the back of that head, and the PCV valve holes being too small created an air velocity that took in oil. Not sure, but I think that came out in 2012. That's what I read somewhere. My 2011 CTS Coupe had the timing chains replaced under warranty by the dealer around 50k by the previous owner so that was probably upgraded. I use little if any oil at all between changes at 105k.

The reason I know this is because I tried turning the engine over with no spark plugs and was shocked how much force it takes to turn that engine over and realized it was the high pressure fuel pump taking all that Force. After I remove the pump the engine would turn over very easy like the normal engine should but with that pump in there it takes a lot of force to turn that over and all that force goes through the timing chains, the bottom and the front one. Good video thanks.

Don't underestimate the impact of the "PCV VALVE". 2004 - 2007 models had a design flaw, and the pcv valves will gunk up and jam. This causes increased crank pressure issues, resulting in excessive oil use / oil burn / sludge. The pcv valve can be "maintained" (cleaned at every service), or (better yet) MODIFIED (see videos on how to drill resized holes), or replaced with the new (> 2013) design. There are those that believe THIS (pcv valve - poor ventilation) is WHY the GM service intervals are too long.

You nailed it! It's a engineering F-Up. Saabs don't have this issue. Better heads do to a turbo. Also another big thing! its a High Feature Engine! High compression! use the gas gm tells you to use! These motors are none like any motors in some since. They are as small as a 2.8 and can be punched out to a 4.0 No motor can do that with out sleeves. This one can. Look at the vent valve on the covers. One side it is big while The other is tiny! Take that cover off and take a bit or something open it up! That will help that side vent better. Oil and gas is all this motor ask for. Don't cheap out! It will treat you well!

I have an 07 Cadillac CTS that I love dearly and baby it to the hilt, with a 3.6 VVT engine. Never had a lick of trouble with it at all! I keep my oil changed very regularly though and he was nothing but for synthetic oil in it of course. I checked the oil every couple of weeks or so and it always seems to be right on full. Once in a while I might have to add a splash or two probably just a couple ounces if that. But really, it doesn’t even use any oil so to speak. I Find My 3.6 to be a pretty good engine in my CTS.

I have an 09 Saturn Aura with the 3.6 and it just turned 270K the other day. Based on my experience with this engine I thought they were pretty much bullet proof but looking at the forums not everyone has been so lucky. I change my own oil and have been from about the 3rd year I owned the car. Never rely on the oil monitor to tell you when it's time for an oil change - do that and you're absolutely going to have issues. I change my oil every 5K miles religiously. Used conventional oil for the first 100K and then switched to a full synthetic and the car is still running great.

Tranny is leaking very slowly ($70 seal but about $800 in labor to get to it). Hope I'm not jinxing myself writing this but still going strong after all these years.

Hi Boss Automotive, first of all great advice regarding the care of the engine but, as an owner of this engine, I would like to add something to your advice if and when someone does decide to do an oil change or timing chain it is highly recommended to: 1) Remove the old oil filter and Drain the old engine oil out first. 2) Install new oil filter and Add engine flush in the engine before refilling to specifications with new engine oil. 3) Run engine with the combined flush and oil as to the instructions of the engine flush solution. 4) Remove oil filter and drain engine oil. 5) The owner may repeat the engine flush again if the owner thinks it is required (but in truth, I always flush my engine twice) but this requires extra oil filters and engine oil t be used. 6) 2nd flush, Remove oil filter and drain engine oil. 7) Install a new oil filter, and refill engine to the recommended specifications with engine oil. 8) After the new Oil Filter is installed and the new Engine oil is filled to the correct and recommended specifications, the owner must check the colour of the engine oil (via the dip stick) as they drive the vehicle, as soon as the engine oil turns black, change the oil filter and engine oil. Hope this helps. (P.S. By the way, if the engine has suffered neglect from irregular servicing it is always recommended to have the sump/pan oil pickup checked, cleaned or replace, especially if the owner has just flushed the engine and then replaced the timing chain and installed a new oil pump).

Great suggestions MAS.I have a 2012 Buick enclave, 103K.kilometers, great car but on cold starts like in the morning it would idle high and very erratically for about 20 seconds then idle great afterwards..I can hear like the timing chains making some noise and think i need to change the timing chains.. I am thinking about doing a oil flush but not sure what is a good flush to use with these engines, Sea foam, marvel mystery oil etc.. Anyone knows what flush works well with these particular engines. I never go past 7K or 8K kilometers between oil changes.. thanks
@vincentrobinette1507
@vincentrobinette1507 Жыл бұрын
If the engine needs a flush, you've waited too long since the last oil change. I don't own this particular engine, but, I think a much more accurate way to gauge oil change intervals, is based on the amount of FUEL consumed by the engine, and ignore time or mileage. Each quart of oil in the crank case is good for ~30-50 gallons of gas. If you get 30 miles per gallon, that's approximately 900-1500 miles. If your engine holds 5 quarts, that's approximately 4,500-7500 miles. In this engine, it might pay to change closer to the 30 gallons per quart. (I don't know how much oil this engine holds)

I have the oil changed in my Ford 2001 E-150 (5.4L/329CID) Conversion Van every 3,000 miles. She has 196,000 miles and no engine oil leaks. I've noticed I'm burning roughly 3/4 quart of oil between changes. I check my oil every time I gas and add when needed. I have it on good authority that my Triton V8 will hit 500k before needing to be rebuilt. Coolant is changed every 120,000 miles or sooner if it looks nasty.

I agree with you. My 2014 enclave has 96k miles without any issue on the engine. I personally replaced the oil at 5k with full synthetic motor oil and full synthetic Fram oil filter ( I tore apart the old filter to verify the quality of this filter, and I was very satisfied with the internal components) I also opened a cheap filter installed by my local GM dealer 😢 that is why I prefer do it by myself.

Yes Sir engine flush with every oil change. My 2014 impala gets 2 oil changes a year. Nov & May so I'm ready for winter & summer. My tip is to jack the car up on the driver side about six inches and let it drain for at least 1 hour. Or until you can count to 30 without seeing any oil drip out. The oil drain plug is on the passenger side facing the rear of the car. I drive about 10000 miles a year.

@Boss Automotive: Hey, a first owner of a 08 enclave with 65k miles is selling and asking $8k for it. However, he followed the "10% oil life remaining" on indicator for oil changes. Upon checking Carfax, it seems like the intervals have been 7k-8k miles. Should I purchase and follow your oil change recommendation from this point on or don't purchase at all? Thanks!

I've had my 08 xl7 with this 3.6l for over a decade. I bought it from a rental car company before 50k mi. I didn't even own it a year before the timing chain started making noise. Replaced under the manufacturer warranty. It doesn't even have 130k mi on it now. I change my oil regularly, clean the egr and vacuum tubing regularly, use seafoam in the gas and oil before every oil change... and I have the code again. Mine is burning oil though. I'm going through about a quart of oil every month of daily driving of about an hour and half per day city. I have also always used full synthetic and high mileage oil in it.

My 2015 lacrosse stalled on highway right after an oil change. Towed home it won't start now. Low oil pressure light had start coming on after every 20 to 30 minute trip for a few days prior. I would shut engine off, wait a few minutes and it would be fine. But same problem after about a 10 mile/20 minute trip to work, and on way home. Tensioner pulley was rattling. I hope engine is not seized. I read it may have a sensor that shuts engine off when oil pressure is too low to prevent blowing or seizing engine. Hoping thats the case. Haven't got it diagnosed yet due to money problems. Its been sitting 35 days. Yesterday checked oil it was lower than a month ago when shut down. So climbed under to see if any oil had leaked and can see at bottom towards rear of block under where pulleys are it looked wet. And had oil build up. Stuck hand under feeling around and felt a small rubbery portrusion and clean new oil was on my fingertip. I literally pulled the rubbery stuff of it is white. I don't know much about cars. I guess it is a sealer or something. So guessing thats where the slow leak is. Trying to determine if need oil pump or a gasket. Or if engine seized on me, or if sensor just not letting car start due to leak messing with pressure. I also realized oil change only put 5 qts in and it takes 6. And its low at least a quart since when checked day it got towed home. No stain on ground though. Just oily around whatever part that is down there toward the rear of the engine under the pulleys. I am thinking thats where the oil pump is? By looking at your vid its near the crank.
