This video series features the complete restoration of a 1972 CL350 Honda Scrambler motorcycle. The videos should help anyone whether working on a cafe racer build or a full-on original restoration. I'm definitely not an expert so please refer to your manuals for proper disassembly and assembly instructions. Please leave comments if you have any questions. I'll be happy to help answer questions if I can confidently provide solutions. Again, I'm not a professional. This is my 2nd Honda motorcycle restoration and I'm learning every single day. I'd love to hear your tips if you have better ways to do things. I hope you find the series useful and entertaining. I strive to show as much detail as possible so that the videos can be used as not only a how-to resource but also a reference for the placement and original set up of parts and systems.
If you don't have one already please get a manual for your specific project. There are many available online for download for free.
Common Motor Collective, from which I source many of my replacement parts, has a fantastic resource on their website: bit.ly/CBManuals
You can also join groups on Facebook and get involved in the community.
Keep on wrenching, Friends!
Please consider supporting the channel by purchasing items that you’ll need to complete your vintage motorcycle restoration project. Any support is appreciated.

I'm doing my first tank right now. Haven't put the top coat on it yet, still doing some prep, trying to get it right. It had a little damage I had to fix with Bondo. I've noticed that once it's primed you can use a flashlight to help find any tiny dings or high/low spots. You put the flashlight close to the tank at different angles and you'll see a slight shadow if something isn't perfectly smooth.

Nice work, I’m 14 and me and my dad fix up and sell used / broken dirt bikes and motorcycles. I am in the process of painting a Harley Sportster for a guy, and this was very helpful. 👍 ( he gave me multiple bottles of spray max 2k primer and 2k clear coat, along with a good hot rod red, so I’m pretty excited.)

Be sure to get your primer as smooth as possible, Don't rush the job, The smoother your primer the smoother your end results. Do some research on guide coating and sanding, This will ensure you get it preped well for the smoothest finish. If there is one thing I have noticed about everyone that use's spray cans it is that they don't prep well enough and rush the job.

You inspired me to fix my tank. It fell over in a trailer and got a dent on the tank. Always said I'd fix eventually, but after watching your vids about stripping and painting this tank, I realized this really is something I can do myself. Plus after having the skill, I can keep painting and trying new colors and what not. Great vids 👍

I waited I think an hour on the primer. Light sanding. Then color. Let the color sit for a couple weeks before I hit the clear. I think. It was a long time ago. You want that color to breathe out fully before putting clear on.

Clear lacquer is not going to hold up to gasoline. Should use Spraymax 2K clear. It has a catalyst and will withstand gasoline. Also I bet your floor was a mess after you were done. You mention not to touch tank but you handled the rear mounting tab. By the way Spraymax has epoxy primer 2k also. Sprays with a wide extra fine pattern.

Anyway, I want the spare tins to paint so I don't mess up the beautiful color that's on it now. 3000 is too fine of a grit for a mechanical bond. Maybe use a guide coat, 600 grit sand paper and fix the ripples (low spots, high spots) and get it closer to perfection?!?! Nice video though! :) Also, waiting hours for it to dry kills any chance of a chemical bond.

All that work only to make silly mistakes. First the repair work wasn't complete. I seen one flat spot in the bondo area. Was clear as day with the first primer coat and then there is the multiple pin holes. As for the paint job... never touch your work with bare hands after the prep is done. Wipe it down in one motion with prepall and spray. Chasing your work around is never a good idea. Next time use two hangers, one left and one right and you wont have to chase it. With that all said you have talent just tighten it up a bit and you will see major improvements.

I really didn’t have any other options so I just went for it. The paint scratch ended up coming out remarkably close for a 50 year old color. It was a “it is what it is” kind of a situation.

Well this guy sure has the spirit,.....but rattle can paint jobs to me never look good. Yeah,....I was forced to do mine that way,....I did it in the 2 hours between jobs,.... so I wouldn't have time to clean my spray gun. My advise is read the can first to make sure it's enamel,.....not Lacquer,....or to do the job right you would have to strip it down to bare metal,.... again. With enamel you just scuff it and paint it. You cant spray enamel over Laquer. That's old info but I prefer enamel to the new crap. Base cote clear coat? Do the same thing twice? Epoxy paint? Not in my spray gun? WATER PAINT? My cheap scate company made me use that crap. If theirs putty involved you need to seal it before you paint it. For a smooth finish you wet sand the primer. But you put the primer on heavy,.. not fast and dry. See you wet sand,.....the primer to make a smooth surface. You spray it slower so that it go's on like paint,......not dry like over spray. You should not have to sand your paint between coats. A) seal your bondo. B) Heavy primer C) wet sand,....wipe off good. D) Paint,....you should see gloss,... not flat over spray from going too fast. E) After that keep the paint glossy,....after 3-4 coats your done. To me his paint job looks like he went too fast with the primer and its essentially over spray? Then he sprayed his paint over,......the over spray and instead of gloss its a almost flat haizy look. You want about a pint,...in a touch up spray gun,... and it will look as good as it can look. You will see all your bad bondo work,...unless you paint it white.

Wrong! You should wet sand primer between coats. Wet sand the color, then clear. You would have had a much better result. It's also obvious that you can see the bondo areas and a few dents. Orange peel city.

That can does have a wide spray pattern, your technique was poor. if your using up and down movement hold the can horizontally, if side to side then hold the can vertical. you will waste less paint and have an even finish.

@@KeepOnWrenching actually.. from what I saw it was mediocre.. at best... your technique to prime is seriously flawed.. you are wasting way to much paint just throwing it at the tank.. slow it sown a bit.. relax.. remember.. its only paint.. if it doesnt turn out right.. it can be redone.. your overlay should be about 65 to 75%... depending on the spray pattern of the nozzle.. and you should go around your seams and edges first to allow to get a good coverage there when you do you final spray...good luck..

So the Wifey asked me if you were getting spray on the gold bike? Any overspray on the other bike? I'm like Kentucky Yankee, I think it's time you graduate to a spray gun and compressor. Find a local automotive paint store and mix and match your own paint and colors. You will never go back. I will say you are probably getting the best job out of a spray can that is humanly possible.
@KeepOnWrenching
@KeepOnWrenching 5 жыл бұрын
I had the gold one covered “most” of the time. I did give her a good wipe down though once I realized the error of my ways. Spray gun has been acquired for the next bike. But I am pretty thrilled with what can be done with the spray can when you TAKE YOUR TIME. Plus, not everyone has an air compressor, etc or funds to acquire them. It can be done via alternate means.
