Also only use 2K clear on your gas tank, otherwise you will get a nasty surprise if you ever spill gas on it with regular clear, it will just melt. 2K is a must.

@@dongotti6802 Nono! If you want to use it for something that's going to have gas near it, don't use 1k "It won't do" 1k and 2k stands for 1 component and 2 component clear coat. Meaning one has a hardening component and clear coat (2k) while 1k just have clear coat. 1k works for stuff that you're going to have inside or something that doesn't need to be durable. Also note as he stated in the video, 2k spay cans have a time period when you can use it before it has hardened IN the can.

Sellers who claim a 1k paint that offers the “same” protection as 2k or catalyzed paint is marketing/lying to reach the masses. There are those who think there must be a money saving hack hidden by the greedy paint companies BUT wise people learn from others mistakes.

I'm working on my first bike build and I've been studying painting and I have to say your video is by far the best and most detailed explanation of how to do it right that I've seen. Most people won't realize how much time it takes to set up and shoot all the different angles, review the footage and edit the videos. So thank you! As a newbie it's incredibly helpful and although I'm sure I'll make plenty of mistakes along the way, this video is a perfect step by step guide for me to tackle one of the more challenging parts to a bike build. Kudos man! 👍✌

Nice Tutorial. Pretty much summed up the process I do with rattle can paint projects... the only difference is I tend to lay down the clear as soon as it flashes for a good chemical bond. However, if I'm doing graphics or stripes or any multi-color projects (where you have to tape off and paint various colors in stages) often the first colors of paint has already cured so you shouldn't really apply the clear right away...in those cases, I do a final wet sand (1200 grit) before I use 2K clear over the whole project. Comes out great!

Great work with rattle cans, Taylor!!! I would add, that if buying multiple cans, try to get all the same "lot number" or "batch code" because there are variations from one to the next OR make sure you have a whole can to do the entire last coat.
@kihestad
@kihestad 3 жыл бұрын
Nice job, and cool color! 😊 I normally put on clear coat just some hours after the last base coat. It makes the clear coat bind to the base coat. I think the rule of thumb is to wait no longer than 24 hours, or the base coat needs sanding before the clear coat can be applied. What happens if you wait too long, is that you end up with two separate paint jobs on top of each other, and the last coat might peal off over time.
@RobertKeigher
@RobertKeigher 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I waited a few day and sprayed the clear and it lifted off. I could basically peel it off like cellophane. I will now sand the base coat to hopefully get the clear to stick. This is my second project and this worked great, but I cleared in just a couple of hours on that project.
@wav1366

Funny - Ive heard the complete opposite that with 2k, you're supposed to wait 24 hours at least if you're using Duplicolour like this guy is.

@@RobertKeigher Yes you need to sand your base coat with 2000 to 6000 you can, clean paint from sanding residue with glass cleaner, paint will look horrible and grey but once you put clear coat on it, it will reveal itself !

Everything was pretty good budget paint job BUT spot putty is definitely not made to be used in that way. Just a heads up for anyone attempting this. You need to use a proper 2 part glaze or body filler for low spots or waves. Keep the spot putty for chips or tiny scratches and that’s about it

Tip, hang the gas tank to the ceiling (garage opener) by the tank rear mounting hole so dust and overspray won’t kick up. The paint can that you used and 2k nozzle can be turned to spray in a horizontal fan to spray the gas tank in an up and down motion when it is hung. 2K clear is self leveling, lay it on medium to wet and only wait 8min in between coats. A little runs will heal itself after an hour.

Good job, I've done many like that over the years. One suggestion, I would apply the paint in a cross hatch pattern, coat to coat. In other words, I would apply a coat length wise like you show, then side to side on the next coat until you're satisfied it's even and with complete coverage. That makes it easy to get a really good even coverage across any surface. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the that project!

Thank you for the excellent video! I'm 69 and build high performance motorcycles, also repair and restore. However, I can't paint worth a shit. I really enjoyed your video and hope I can repeat what you have shown all of us. My present mess is a 1976 Yamaha RD400. I just fired up the motor with an auxiliary gas tank and it's going to be a drag bike. So hopefully I can paint the fiberglass body kit and not be embarrassed. As most of us know, it's the motor that takes you over the finish line, but it's just not the same when you have a shity paint job! Again, thank you for your video. Maybe an old dog can learn new tricks. 🤬

Hi Taylor, you should get a stopper rubber, in my day we used stopper over sanded bondo, it stopped the paint from sinking into the bondo and being able to see the repair. The stopper rubber was/is a great bit of kit, did i mention that i was a time served paint sprayer, now retired. I always finished the sanding down with 800, and always applied 3 coats at a time , 3 times, sanding down after every 3 coats. I miss spraying bikes and cars, I really loved doing it, and the end result was amazing for me. I had a great teacher/journey man. And like you said.......the secret is in the preparation!!! Great video Taylor. 😎👍👍👍🇬🇧🎄

Here’s an idea for a future KZbin video. With the Covid restrictions slowly but surely coming off, everyone’s got a case of spring fever and starting to pull their vintage bikes out of the garage and getting them back into roadworthy condition and that includes cleaning and detailing their bikes. With this new generation of ceramic coatings being used to extend the shine and polish life. I’d like to see you take one of your bikes and show everyone how to properly apply the ceramic coating and what you do to maintain said coating. How long do you go before cleaning and reapply the ceramic coating. Long time listener, first time caller

One easy thing you can do to get your cans to spray way better is heat them up. All you have to do it let them sit in hot water for maybe a half hour or so before you paint. Make sure you wipe it off before you paint though so it doesn’t drip on your paint. It will make your can spray much better

It is worth mentioning, you always want to use compatible paints, primers and clears. Definitely use automotive quality 2K paints/clears to stand up to fuels and oils. NEVER use cheap rattle can enamels or you will find your paint job dripping on the pavement the first time you spill gas down the tank. ANOTHER TIP: You guys can extend the life of activated 2K spray paint for up to six months if you simply refrigerate it! I have a can of spray max 2K in a plastic baggie sitting in my fridge door for 3 months now. At $24 bucks a can...you may as well extend the life of it!

Nice basic steps ! If you want to try these extra ones i'm sure you'll love the results for really low effort require. 1- Take a small heater and a pan of water, let the bottom of your spray can heat at a medium temperature, give it few shake which gonna move gas inside and cold the can again, put it back in water until it's warm again and you ready to paint. 2- Especially if you work on cold environnement like garage, warehouse... you can use hot gun at low setting (air dryer is also fine) and heat up your surface before painting. This easy upgrade on your painting process will make your paint flow well and avoid orange peel for a really nice finish !

Just a tip, when you sand the tank, stand at either end of the tank at have it on a fixed stand, close your eyes, then sand using a soft block using long strokes and feel the flat spots with both your hands. Like some Zen surfboard shaper. it takes a while but you get it very even like a new tank. using the orbital sander like you did isn't the best practice. I can actually see the flat spots all over that tank on this video in that paint job. The Fluro shines are all wiggly. Just thought I'd share what professionals do and why they charge the money the do. Cool channel. Thanks.

Thank you for your comments about bondo. So many people don’t understand that. They think it’s for filling dents. It’s not, it’s for filling the minor scratches and imperfections made by the tools used in the process of removing the dent. If after sanding the bondo you’re left with bondo more than a couple millimeters thick, you should have spent more time working the metal. Fill in a deep dent completely with bondo and not doing the metal work, and it will not look proper, and the bondo will eventually crack, bubble, fall off, or otherwise fail significantly. No doubt.
