This method works well, but I find I have the best results when using multiple layers of the glass/tile medium and inkaid mix. Also, bright color cards are much easier to print than dark cards. White and blue cards are phenomenal while black and green tend to get smudgy or streak or blur or just look too dark. You have to play around with contrast and lightness in GIMP and be ready to sacrifice a few prepped cards to each successful print. Also, DO NOT USE PAPER AS A CARRIER SHEET. Use a stiffer material like a light, flexible cardboard or heavy paper. Normal paper will get off-center in your printer and you will misprint your cards. Then you have to acetone them all over again and it's a giant pain. Finally, be careful about applying the liquitex gloss varnish. From my experience, it basically dizzolves all the layers together to bring out the foil at the back. Only apply small amounts at a time or you will get giant smudges on your card.

Hey Brian maybe you can help. I am trying to strip the ink using acetone and it's not working; the darker ink is refusing to budge, while the lighter areas are stripped so easily that the foil backing itself is being removed. Not sure if Ultimate Masters foils are just super-resilient to acetone, or if the acetone I'm using is trash. UPDATE: problem is UMA foils. Tried a foil from M13 and it worked

Started trying this method. I'm failing at step 1. The acetone is easily removing the white ink but is NOT removing the darker ink from my cards. Furthermore, please recognize that he made the artwork for arcanis transparent in photoshop. Pause the vid and you will see those areas. Without that (knowledge!), you wouldn't get this shiny result in the end unless you literally drown the card in this last substance (insert name here). Speaking of substances... well, if you are from the US, you may find em. If you are from EU, well, good luck gentlemen. What i found out so far is: dassart.com/shop/ and inkaid1.com both are alternatives for the digital ground stuff. For the Glass & Tile thing i'm still searching, seems to be a primer for bringing acryl color to glass surfaces. The other stuff you should get in your local stores where you can get tinker stuff. @briankaul12017 жыл бұрын
This is super good work and thanks for teaching me how to do this, but imho it's not quite this easy and takes quite a bit of experimentation to get it right. I found that when using a foil base card, one coat of the 50/50 mix you recommend caused my images to blur and distort. I had much better luck with two to four coats painted on perpendicularly to one another. The color of the cards you print matters a lot.Too dark and they will line and blur; too light and it will look washed out. I found that if I wanted a card to turn out properly (especially high contrast cards with lots of black), I had to be prepared to print it several times on several different blanks with different contrast and saturation settings on my photoshop program (GIMP). Finally, I found regular printer paper too weak for use as a carrier sheet. The paper would move in the printer, causing the image to print to one side of the card. Super annoying. I recommend smaller sheers of stiffer material like a thick paper or thin card board. Thanks for posting this. I would have never starting printing without this video. I really appreciate it :)

@aaro12684 жыл бұрын
InkAid primes surfaces for inkjet prints, FolkArt primes a smooth surface. Together they make a compound that bonds to the foil, and then bonds ink to itself (since foil and ink don't bond with eachother very strongly). You'll need to find substitutes that do the same thing as they do. If you don't, your prints will bleed and rub off a lot more easily. If you can't use varnish/water to remove the ink and reveal foil, you may be able to use highly diluted acetone and/or alcohol. Whenever you substitute, you'll need to do a few material tests to see if it works. It's very likely that InkAid + FolkArt are both soluble in water, while most other stuff isn't (which is why I suggest alcohol or acetone since they're easy to get and tend to work on non-water-soluble stuff). Once you've got the card in the state you would like, you'll need to apply varnish or clearcoat to protect it from solvents.

maybe I have no idea how printers work, but doesnt that paper bend a lot as it goes through? how can a card survive this? it seems like the printer or the card will break/become damaged
@forrestcarroll93508 жыл бұрын
+Nick Walden Not really. In fact, magic cards can survive much more than the slight bend going through a printer. Check out the bend test used to verify expensive cards. It's almost cringing to look at, but the cards survive with no problems.

I wonder if I could spray the the Golden, and the Folk art through a small airbrush. I don't have faith in my brushing abilities.

How do I make the card foil myself? I want to project a brand new card from the ground up without using another card. Using this method, you finish the card, but how about preparing the blank foil template to add custom art to?

Are these tournament legal? I've been reading around and I can't figure it out. All I've gotten is that it's up to the judges discretion and that the words and everything must be readable.
@kargansk7 жыл бұрын
They're not, no. At best, they're fake cards, which aren't legal at all, and at best they're proxies, and since proxy tournaments are no longer sanctioned, there's not really a place for them aside from your own fun and enjoyment. As an aside, I'm pretty sure the "at judges discretion" portion there is for a judge deciding whether or not to write out a proxy for a player if a card is damaged (to the extent of being marked and/or unplayable) whilst in the midst of an event.

Thanks, I've also been doing some more reading. Clearly Proxies aren't allowed in Tournament events, but if I want to make some of these for fun pure enjoyment and just for collector stuff, am I allowed to sell them? Like if I make some proxies, and upload them onto the Internet to sell them just as collector items for other people who would like some, is that illegal and can I get sued? I don't really feel like getting sued in the next year.

If the proxies you're selling look like the actual cards, yes. You can get sued pretty hard for that, because it's copyright infringement. Aside from that, say you made a proxy like the one in the vid, you may want to make sure you have the artist's permission to use the image or to sell the proxy. You can get hit pretty hard if the artist finds out you're making money off of their image without permission.
