Absolutely - would love to see a far more detailed look at colour darkroom printing as there is almost nothing online about it. There's plenty of B&W stuff but we need more in-depth looks at the C-Type printing from start to finish eg from the drum scanner, to the screen, through the printer and how they each work. Great video but would love to see much more.

One of my absolute favorite is printing photos from film. Color film printing especially to me meant being part of a community. I took color film classes at the international center of photography when I was in high school and every weekend the whole class would print in the color dark room, which is always pitch black, so your sense of hearing is sharpened and you have to be hyper aware of who's around you so you don't bump into each other. Still, walking in the dark screaming on what side of the path you're walking and towards where while people still bumped into you was fun, and waiting 3 to 5 minutes for your print to come out was enough to start conversations about anything with the person waiting next to you. Overall, I really miss darkroom printing.

Thank you for this video! Been wanting to see the different types of printing side by side for nearly a decade but have not been able to print color dark room before. As a film photographer it’s very useful to see the difference of the three.

Definitely found this interesting! So far I only printed with the inkjet, but I'm going to do handprints in the dark room soon. So, it was really nice to see different kinds of printing methods directly compared to each other.

The problem with film photography is that some photographers are solely defining their work on what medium they are using instead on the ideas/concepts behind their work.

@SolidStateWorkshop4 жыл бұрын
I agree. I’m guilty of it too, though. I enjoy seeing how other people use film to make photos, but knowing that they used film immediately biases my perspective on the image. The real question should be “Does the image evoke some feeling from the viewer, or is it just another boring image?” So, I’ve taken down any film hashtags from my Instagram images to remove bias. Yet, I still follow many people who proudly brand themselves as film photographers! Including George. So am I a hypocrite? I don’t know.
@unityoc4 жыл бұрын
While this statement is true, I don't know how it is relevant to this video. If you are trying to suggest the image he chose to print isn't worth it then I think you missed the whole point! By the way you can also apply your statement to digital - people obesess over full frame vs. cropped, DSLR vs. mirrorless.

Was hoping this was your Toronto video but this is just as awesome because I was waiting for a printing video! The dodging and burning really reminded me of how Ansel Adams would do it.. I’m very glad you showed that because it’s something people should know, even if they don’t go with that method. Great video

Ctyping your photos is completely different from looking at a screen. The colours you can get on a ctype are crazy and can make a good photo look outstanding. I started scanning my developed film and creating contact sheets in lightroom. I now get these as ctypes that will last a hundred years and can put them next to the sheet of film. Also every couple of months I print my favorites in 40cmx40cm or even larger to get a feel of my work. George maybe you could do a video on organizing your developed film / workflow? I would love to know how the photographers you interview have found little tricks to organize everything.

I've actually had the opposite experience with using Bay Photo for printing. I found inkjet printing was wildly sharper than digital c-prints and the colors (esp the blacks) were much deeper. I don't think I'll go back to digital c-prints now.

Good intro video! I really hope you take another crack at inkjet printing, you really can have an extremely high level of control with it (sometimes TOO high!). As someone who does this professionally with artists, I feel like I should mention that more often than not, a significant amount of time is spent making the necessary adjustments to get from "finished" file to finished print. I love c printing, but in 5 years your your c prints and digital Cs are going to look significantly different, not so for inkjet!

To me, pure analogue printing is the only real thing. It doesn´t have to be done by hand, printing on an analogue minilab is totally fine. Sadly, those machines from the late 90´s, up to where they were tho only hhing existing as digital was just not around yet, are so damn rare nowerdays. I only know 3 labs in Germany that still work with them, and those don´t do all film formats and types. Keep up the 100% analogue workflow, thanks for the Video.

I appreciate the video, but I definitely don't understand the attraction to the image. It looks a lot like a snapshot that just anyone can take. I'm not sure I would waste my hard earned dollars on printing a photo that seems like a throwaway to me.
@TimPalman7 жыл бұрын
Are you familiar with the work of Stephen Shore, William Eggleston, Jeff Wall? They're some of the most successful photographers ever, and they make work which references, both visually and conceptually, the "snapshot" aesthetic.
@Justic3PourTous7 жыл бұрын
Tim Palman Jeff Wall on the other hand will seize a moment that he finds captivating, he’ll store that memory & then will recreate that same scenery almost as if he was working on a movie set. He has a poetic, artistic & honest approach when it comes to photography. I don’t see any resemblance whatsoever
@TimPalman7 жыл бұрын
o k Jeff Wall rides the line between real and surreal by capturing a subject more suited to a snapshot “style” - of the moment, candid - in a way we is highly produced and preconceived. His images, however, draw all their meaning from their relation to the snapshot.

If intended t be a direct comparison of the potential of each process, I think that idea is weakened by two issues; First, by picking some sort of "art" paper for the inkjet print, a failure to match the color and texture of the paper bases invalidates that comparison with C-prints. Second, and this is more my opinion,if the digital files were "drum scanned", that type of film image to digital scanning can cost up to $100 per image, which is not a process economically available to most people. Creating the digital image by a more widely used (and probably lower quality) scan process would seem to give a more useful comparison. All that said, I think the basic idea here is very useful, and with the adjustments I suggest, the comparative outcomes would be similar but more dramatic.

I just learnt how to do handprints yesterday and my god it was beautiful particularly the MF photo that was printed. I actually prefer Giclée over digital C-type. C-type papers are too glossy and I like the painterly gorgeous textures of Giclée prints. I think I only ever printed one photo on digital C-type and it was a portrait of my gf. It works for portraits perhaps but not for my vision and genre which is landscape photography.
