I am a Muslim and just stumbled upon here. I really liked this whole clip for all the education it provided. Never heard or saw the cone idea but really liked it. Just for the correct word and pronunciation for slaughtering of the prescribed animals and birds, it is called 'HALAL' pronounced Ha, Laal. ZA,BEE,HA - HA, LAAL both read together is the word for the meat that is slaughtered with the name of God "Allah" taken when the knife is in use to slaughter. Zabeeha is the word for Slaughtered.

Oh you're most certainly welcome as I said I really enjoyed this video and I stumbled upon it cuz I seen a few other videos but I just seen a comment of somebody else saying that they were Muslim. I too am Muslim as well so being kosher and having the animal being slaughtered Halal is a mandatory practice in Islam and as previously stated in the other individuals post we at the time of slaughtering the animal there is indeed a specific speech coupled with the precise timing simultaneously to render the animal 100% authentically Halal. Besides of it being halal there are just so many benefits of the way you precisely slaughtered the animal. It basically started with how humane the process was from start to finish. I commend you for such great practise.

I think a class like this should be required learning for kids. Even if they chose not to participate they'd still be informed on the whole process and wouldn't grow up with the weird impression of chicken magically appearing in plastic packaging.

Totally agree! This is one of the best videos that I have seen. And I loved the interviews with the kids. (Maybe the best part!) I struggle a little bit with gutting. I have arthritis in my hands and I don't raise Cornish Cross. So maybe my birds are little tougher because what I've been butchering is just my extra roosters...some of them up to 24 weeks old. I want to get a plucker ASAP...or maybe build one.
@randallducharme1662
@randallducharme1662 2 жыл бұрын
I have an old school tip taught to me back in high school (88) in my major Poultry Science that is more humane and will help the feathers come of easier. This results in less time in the plucker or less time plucking by hand. First, you will need a 3” poultry sticker knife. Now, before you slit the throat you do the following. 1) While holding the head in your hand gently squeeze the corners of the chickens mouth to open it. 2) Once it is open hold it in the open position. 3) Take your knife and place the tip in the nasal slit in the roof of the mouth at an angle towards the brain. 4) Push the knife into the brain and twist at the same time which will cause the chicken to tense up and then relax. 5) Once the chicken has relaxed (approx. 5 sec) remove knife. 6) Slit throat to bleed out chicken. Puncturing the brain kills them instantly rather than letting them bleed out while alive. Same reason we use a bolt gun on cows. I hope this helps.
@quietobserver4636
@quietobserver4636 Жыл бұрын
The reason we kill by bleeding is to remove the blood from the bird. The most efficient way to do this is with the heart still pumping.
@retard_activated
@retard_activated Жыл бұрын
@@quietobserver4636 That's incredibly selfish, though. But the mechanics make sense. Exsanguination does not necessarily have to take place while conscious. In fact, many neurological and electrical impulses will persist, even when the brain is irreparably damaged. Personally I felt it was a poor justification in the video - saying to avoid the esophagus because they will panic (okay,like who wouldn't?!) Yet he slowly, painfully SAWS BACK AND FORTH ON THEIR NECKS. So they can STILL BREATHE and be CONSCIOUS during these final painful moments... It's honestly more ethical to just chop. Stress hormones causes vascular tension which actually impedes blood loss... And even though he "acknowledges" this, he also perpetuates it by unnecessarily drawing out a extremely painful process.... He's doing everything exactly right.... But the kill itself. I really felt for those birds... 🥺
@quietobserver4636
@quietobserver4636 Жыл бұрын
@@retard_activated How many chickens have you personally processed? I've processed thousands. His only problem is an extremely dull knife and his inexperience. Also, kids should not kill until they know exactly how to do it. When the bird is in the cone for a few seconds, then the artery is cut very quickly, with an extremely sharp knife, and the bird looses consciousness almost instantly. Dont bring your subjective bull crap into a conversation that you know nothing about. The analytics of your statement proves your ignorance regarding the topic.

I Remember those chicken harvesting days. Dad would chop off the head using an axe and a chunk of wood. Then let the chicken flop around on the grass. Dip in hot water, pluck feathers by hand, use blow torch to singe off the pin feathers. Oh, what a awful smell that made!. Then take out the innards. We would keep the heart, gizzard, and liver. Dad would slice the gizzard and use pliers to pull off the inner muscle. We all loved the heart and gizzard and would fight over who got it. Most chickens were cut up for frying. We never did 80 chickens at once. Good job done!

As a kid growing up in Queens NY the closest thing I'd ever done was going to the poultry farm to pick out our Thanksgiving turkey. But as an adult now living in VA I've come to appreciate the process. I think more people should see this, especially us city kids who usually only have seen chicken in little trays neatly packaged behind a grocery display. I think it's important to know where our food comes from and I love how you respect the chicken right up to the end. Your wonderful teachers too. I recently found your channel and I'm hooked. I do make my own lotions, and some canning but your videos have inspired me to delve in more to being more self reliant in making a home for my husband and myself. Bright Blessings to you all

We also use a water bath and we do not have a plucker. We heat water over a small fire, often in a large tin can that holds about 5 gallons or 20 litters. We pluck just a few chickens at a time. We put the intestines into a compost pile if the neighbors do not take the intestines and clean the intestines out for their meal. We save the heart and livers in our small freezer. The neighbors love the feet. The neighbors often help me out for the chance to eat the intestines, lungs and feet. Native or free range chickens have a better flavor, but they require steel teeth to chew them. The cage raised chickens do not have the same flavor but the cage raised chickens are much more tender. Our usual chickens are raised less than 45 days and dress out at just over a kilo, (2.2 pounds). We raise our birds to dress out about 4 pounds or more. Thanks for a great video. We will be trying the cones soon. Be blessed..

In The Philippines we collect the blood of the animals at slaughter. We collect the blood in a pan. We add a little vinegar or salt to the pan before we collect the blood. We often add clean intestines to the blood. We cook the blood with the salt and vinegar until until the blood thickens. We add garlic to the blood on occasion we add cleaned intestines to the blood before the it thickens. We also add bay leaves and a few hot peppers to taste. This may sound gross but rge dish is actually very tasty. We use all types of blood, such as pork, chicken, quail and duck. You can also add onions that are minced or very finely chipped.Herbs can be added to taste. Be blessed...

Hi Heartway Farms, just found you guys a couple of days ago. I have to say that you have the best (that I've seen so far, including Mr. Joel S) chx processing video--and trust me i've watched MANY. We started out by helping another homesteading family near us as a tutorial. We did 250 birds in a day!! Not the norm, and that was for their family of 11. Then we did our own the next year, a trial run of 15 cornish cross. Hand plucked and dull knives--not a pretty sight. This year we did 30, just three of us on deck to do the job. We purchased one of those feather pluckers you put on the drill, it was okay, but considering the investment of a drum plucker as we want to double our batch next year. You guys are great teachers, so patient and so thorough. I learn new tips every time I watch a processing vid. From you guys there were a few, but really liked the idea of adding dish soap to the scalding pot AND using trash cans for chill tanks, oh AND the 4 buckets for kill cones. Brilliant. Keep up the good work and may God bless you and your family.

We processed 7 roosters last weekend, we had to order some new knives because the cheaps ones we had don't cut it... literally! Also, sharpen after every cut and I found it easier to pull some feathers at the neck line... it's hard cutting through feathers.. I love the idea about putting some compost under the kill cones.

I love all of the real time facial expressions from both the reluctant and the fascinated. LOL. This is a great video. Anyone who eats chicken should know how they get their food even if they never plan to process themselves.

I am so impressed with how thoughtful you guys did this. I eat meat and love animals so, I am hypocritic in that sense. Yet, I respect how you all went about this. Thank you for doing it in the most humane way possible.

Another helpful tip that we use, is do NOT give them their last supper or breakfast. We start first thing in the morning so they're not too hungry too long. We have less mess with full crops, and less poo mess.

It warms my heart to see these kids in action... not squeamish... just getting after it .. One pointer I can give is this ... If you cup the chickens head , covering its eyes , a chicken's natural reaction to dark is calming .. that's why in the processing plants they go through a dark hallway first before anything else .. But when you home process your chickens you can actually keep you hand over their eyes until they are done twitching... Personally, I wait until the the cockrell feathers relax . That's my que to let go ... Thanks for the video. Probably the most educational video for young people yet and while I know all this already I had to keep watching it to see how the kids were doing..

Nice job with the video (we always used one specific knife for neck only and did it with one swipe...something to look into) also we always have a hose running water in the barrels at the bottom pushing the warmer water out ...nice trick for vacuum sealing bags (wish I Knew that one 500,000 chicken ago) Keep up with the videos (lots of educational information for all ages)

Our meat birds will be processed in about 2 weeks, and your video shows the care, respect, and appreciation for the animals entrusted to your care for as long as they live. We treat ours the same way, giving them the very best chicken lives we can for as long as they're alive. Your kids may not realize it now, but one day they will appreciate the loving way you taught them to respect and value every single animal you raise.

I grew up on a tree farm with a few animals; pigs, chickens, cow, horse and a large garden. I’m much older now, but I really enjoy watching your videos. I just caught this one recently. I was surprised that you did not fast the chickens before processing them. That avoids some of the mess. Josh’s anatomy lesson was interesting and important. Blessings!

Thank you for the video. When I was about 6/7 years old, I helped my great uncle butcher and process a chicken for dinner. I couldn’t remember everything we did / how we did (gutting the bird). This video helped to remind me how to do everything.

Loved this! Brought back fond memories of processing chickens with my family and grandparents. You had a great set-up! I have a chronic illness now, and can't do all the things I want to. But I was given some good days this fall and canned pear sauce with my husband🙂. I am enjoying all your videos! I especially loved all the learning and teaching going on in this video, and the kids all involved like my sister and I were! We helped with processing cows, pigs, rabbits, and one time a moose!

New subscriber here :) I was a little squeamish watching the sawing, but I enjoyed the step by step video and appreciate your patience to teach the young ones the process. I loved seeing their curious brains taking it all in. The hardest part for me is hoping the animals don't suffer or feel any pain, so I appreciate the respect you show them. Do your kids ever have issues getting attached to the animals they raise? I feel like I'd never bring myself to finish out their purpose and end up in a hoarding situation, but I'm also torn because it's known that large productions chains don't really treat animals humanely. I'd rather know I personally gave them kindness from start to finish, and gratitude for what they provide. I wish my dad had passed down his skills as an archery hunter, to learn early on that harvesting your own meat is not a bad thing. I think kids come around to learning this process much easier than adults. Love the videos. Thank you for sharing your world with us!
