a demonstration of some of the roland jx-3p's programming functions. if you're interested in getting a 3p, definitely check this out to get a feel for how you make your own patches without using the pg-200 (optional attachment giving knob control of the parameters that go for way too much $$$ these days and really aren't that necessary, imo).

I think I'm going to pick one of these up tomorrow.. They've got one for a good price at my local pawn shop and I was skeptical about what I read in regards to patch editing. This video makes it look easy without the PG200! Thank you so much for convincing me! :D

Great vid thanks so much - One thing you may want to mention is the "Memory Protect On" vs. "Programmer" setting on the back of the unit.. If "Memory Protect" is On then you can't use the sequencer function.

Excellent tutorial. The best tutorial on KZbin for the JX3P if you don't have the programmer... which I don't. Nice job!

Thanks for the reply! I've got one now, and I'm hooked. Zero disappointments. Hope some basic soldering solves the issue for you.

I have two of these now and no PG 200, and I'm pleased to say you can get by fine with out one. The controllers are nice but not essential. Nice demo.

I agree, the JX3P can be programmed very eacily without the need for a PG-200. I sold my 3P and bought the MKS-30 which is a different story; for that you DO need the programmer. It can be done but it uses +/- buttons instead of a linear slider resulting in very slow increments of the parameter value. :)

Outstanding tutorial! I have a JX-3P on the way and this is perfect! I was wondering how not having a PG200 was going to limit voice programing...Not worried now.

hmmm.. i've had that problem with a poly 800 before, but always thought it was because it was an old, cheap, plastic thing. thanks for the reply!

I had one of these. I found the pre-sets to be mostly useless, and it had no portamento that I know of. I bought a Nord Lead, and sold this really quickly for $250.00 I think. Now someone has one for sale, and I don't have the Nord Lead anymore. What I really want is my Roland SH-101 back which I found at a garage sale for $20.00, and I had to clean it up to get it working.

It was a tradition in the 80's to ship Synths with the most god-awful presets imaginable.....seriously can you think of ONE synth who's presets where even listenable, let alone useable? Presets were good for the first time EVER about 10 years ago.....NOW the new thing I'm noticing is all these new synths (Deep Mind, Prologue, JDXA (Not really new...but crappy) System 8, Prophet 8 Rev2) absoloutly DRENCH their presets with distracting arpegiaters that turn on whether you like it of not, and TONS of Digital Reverb, Delay and Modulation FX (Chorus Flange ect.) I've also noticed some silly ANALOG FX like on the Prolouge, that compressor isn't something that should even be considered an effect, basically the took the last gain stage that would have already been there, and gave you the option of switching it off.....GOOD GOD PEOPLE...what happens when you turn it off? It sounds BAD!!!! That's because It was never supposed to be an effect.....god what scam the synth industry has turned into, the new analog revolution/golden age is over, and the "Might as well call it digital" new dark ages are apon us.....REPENT!!! JUDGMENT IS NIGH!!!!!

You don't need the programmer but I think the organix midi mod is essential if you want to do things live.

Ah cheers, I was looking for a video showing the workflow of the JX-3P. It seems pretty straightforward actually. Thanks a lot, made my choice to purchase one a lot easier! One thing: the crackling noise I hear when you play the synth is probably the mic, right?

The only problem is recording the on board sequencer. I am sending a rimshot from maschine to output 3 of my saffire into the Seq Trigger In. It fires off the sequencer ok(ish) but there is a latency issue of about half a beat. I'm not sure if I'm missing something fundamental. I've tried using the ableton track delay to no avail. I've starting the sequencer then pressing play in ableton and I have tried starting the sequencer on beat but it skips.Anyone out there had this issue?

no worries man, i figured as much! i got the sequencer running with an accented-rimshot on my Yamaha RX5. have u had to keep the tempo of your drum machine rather fast in order to achieve the proper sequence pattern at a tempo you prefer? i've been triggering the rimshot on every hit and playing the other drum parts at half speed around the trigger to get a normal sounding loop. any tricks? so rad! thanks again.

Hi, is there an easy to use manual to use this machine with, the owners manual confused me, and your video is a bit fast, and i cant figure out how to do all the stuff you did, also, is there anyway to write a riff in without having to press rest after every note, cause i cant seem to get it to flow nicely having to press the rest after every note

Buddy, if this is too complicated for you, you should probably sell the synth, he can't dumb it down any more than he has, if you don't get it, then I don't know what to tell you.

Yeah, there's a LOT of over-hype for needing a controller, not many synths until 1987 were hard to program, just the DX7, truth is the JX3P and JX8P both of which I own, are really simple, the 3P being the simplest, but if you think about it on the JX8P where you have velocity aftertouch and the joystick, plus one assignable slider you can leave at a parameter for instantaneous editing....and if you wanted to change that live, you tap 3 buttons, that's it it's something else, really not that difficult, Hell on my much maligned AX73, which does not have aftertouch BUT DOES have paramenters assignable to velocity (Envelope depth, Filter Amp and Pitch can all be controlled via velocity) and also lets you route the filter cutoff to the pitch wheel (And either have it control the pitch as well, or just the filter) the assignable modulation wheel, plus the one real time assignable slidder, you really have real time control of several parameters, more than enough for any single song, and then if you want to change the slidder function again, 3 buttons away....that's it......I really don't get people who whine about needing the controllers
