How To Program A Toyota Highlander Remote Key Fob 2001 - 2007 DIY Tutorial

An easy to follow video tutorial on how to program a remote key fob for a 2001 - 2007 Toyota Highlander.

1. Start with the key out of the ignition, drivers door is open all others closed and drivers door is unlocked.
2. Perform these steps within 5 seconds.
A. Insert the key into the ignition(Do NOT Turn) Pull key out.
B. Insert the key into the ignition(Do NOT Turn) Pull key out.
3. Perform these steps within 40 seconds.
A. Close then open the drivers door.
B. Close then open the drivers door.
C. Insert the key into the ignition(Do NOT Turn) Pull key out.
4. Perform these steps within 40 seconds.
A. Close then open the drivers door.
B. Close then open the drivers door.
C. Insert the key into ignition and leave it in ignition.
D. Close the drivers door.
E. Turn the ignition to ON (Do NOT Start) then back to OFF.
F. Remove the key from the ignition.
5. Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should lock then unlock automatically indicating successful entry into programming mode. Return to step 1 if the locks do not cycle at this point.
6. Perform these steps within 40 seconds.
A. Press the lock and unlock buttons on the remote key fob clicker simultaneously for 1.5 seconds.
B. Immediately after letting go of the lock and unlock buttons, Press the lock button by itself and hold for 2 seconds. Within 3 seconds, the door locks should lock and then unlock once indicating successful programming. If the door locks cycle twice, repeat steps A and B in step 6 as the remote key fob was not accepted.
C. Repeat steps A and B in step 6 for each new remote fob clickers.
7. Open drivers door.
This programming procedure will program a remote key fob clicker on the following years of Toyota Highlander : 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007.

My 2006 highlander won't go into programming mode, either manually or with a scan tool. Any ideas of where the fault might be? The fobs stopped working and the receiver was dead. Replaced the receiver that appears to be a working unit but cannot enter programming mode. Locks operate normally and no fault codes present.

I have a 2007 Highlander I just recently bought but it didn’t came with a remote fob so I went to get two of them from amazon, model T 20T same as you have. Everything goes well until I go ahead and press LOCK AND UNLOCK button at the same time and the LOCK button after. It do not do anything.

There may be too many remotes already programmed to the vehicle, a 2007 Highlander can have a maximum of 4 remotes programmed at time. To erase all previous remotes and add additional ones, instead of simply adding additional remotes, you just need to do one step differently. If you look at the steps in the description box of the video and look at step "4. E." you need to to turn the ignition from On to OFF 5 times instead of once, to erase previous remotes. Also when you do this the door locks should cycle 5 times to indicate programming mode. If that doesn't solve the issue there may be an issue with both of the new remotes.

Quick question, I have a 2005 highlander with remote start and after following your instructions everything goes as it should until the very end when I have to hold the lock/unlock buttons simultaneously. It’s at that point the door locks do not cycle and the locking functions will not work on the fob. The remote start function still works though. Do you know what the problem could be? Also it’s not the factory remote but the alarm and remote start system was installed by Toyota.

The fob I have for my 2008 highlander is similar to yours but with an extra button for the back glass, all the buttons work except for the unlock button. As far as the fob you have goes it sounds like that issue is that the internal contact for unlock button has broken - fairly common on these style fobs

Doesn't work for me. I tried 20+ times, and at the end, my fob is definitely interacting with the car, causing the lock to cycle every time I press the lock button at the end, but it's not quite making the proper connection. I do everything in step with the video. Any thoughts (besides take it to a dealership)??

Are you sure the vehicle is set-up for factory remotes? Not all are. If you are unsure, take your VIN number and call a Toyota Dealership. Speak with their parts department and they can look up the original build sheet for the vehicle to see what options it has.

Too many fobs programmed in the system. Erase all of them. Do the ignition to on and off step 5 times instead of once. That should erase them.

I just did this with an unofficial remote with glow in the dark buttons. Um...now when I press unlock, it remote STARTS the car. I thought this car didnt even PHYSICALLY support a remote start, merely a remote entry. No key in ignition. Then with key inserted, I have no way to turn the car off. I have to crank it all the way which hard kills the engine. This is very disturbing.
