About The Guest:
This week's follow-up is with Tom Randall. We went deep into how to program your training as a self-coached climber. We talked about how to use your friends to discover your strengths and weaknesses, how to work backward from goals, how long it takes to make major changes in your climbing like switching from bouldering to sport climbing, and much more.
This is one of the most valuable episodes I have ever recorded, for anyone who wants to improve at climbing. Seriously. Don’t skip this episode if you are interested in training.

I coached for years for a multigym business's youth team and youth programs as a 3rd job, and saw a lot of inefficiencies in the way it was run; when I cited my concerns to managers they either through indifference or insistence refused to do anything about it... I then roadmapped a way to restructure and scale the youth programming, all while fulfilling my obligations to my 17 youth athletes and ignorant to upper management and owner plans to shutter youth programming. I then continued to train my competitors at their families' request as an independent team, 3 of whom went on to compete in USA Climbing Nationals until the business threatened a cease and desist; this was ~1 year before the Pandemic shutdowns I'm not just good; I work really hard to be respectably useful and valuable to whomever I coach, and account for myself to my athletes when I fail. That said, I find myself getting repeatedly gatekept in the hiring process from people who never bothered to contact my references, ask questions without any regard for the answers, reschedule interview times or neglect to e-mail back, and otherwise demonstrate near zero professionalism or respect for my time, sometimes freely admitting or demonstrating how little investment they committed to ascending to a hiring position post-COVID. I'm not getting younger - I started climbing at 25, and openly admit I have more to learn about coaching and operating in the industry; but I'm overwhelmed with terror that I have no chance despite sitting on successes and professional background with plans for more professional development given the job opportunity I literally cannot afford to be passed over just because of negligent hiring, which as fairly as I can assess characterizes nearly all roles in the industry I've pursued; the last hiring process strung me out for 2 months before turning me away... the majority of my experiences have been neglect by a hiring person, a hiring AI, or both I have no clue how to translate citable, repeatable accomplishments into basic professional respect in the marketplace

My top strength is pull ups on micro edges like .5 mm using just my pinkies and I wouldn’t say that I really have any weaknesses

Quite the best interviews around at the moment. Let the knowledgeable people speak. HAve listened to some other podcasts and they were dreadful. Good insights from Tom as ever, a few of the commenters should listen too I think!

It would be interesting to hear what Tom’s thoughts are on Steve Bechtel’s nonperiodized training programs where strength, power endurance, and endurance are trained simultaneously.

The best athletes are the best at the basics.... The complicated is the sexy side of the sport, and this is why people want the specific details rather than an overall big picture

If you just climb you’ll pump out and not get as much training in, but if you focus on the strength training and climb less you’ll actually climb harder. But yes you shouldn’t lift or train above your strength level

that last bit on the common strength/power mistake boulders make is very poignant
