Don't worry. You'll almost always sound more natural using the contraction than not, even if you have an accent or mispronounce the word. If you have an accent or mispronounce *cannot,* you'll sound more unnatural because *cannot* is not preferred by natives. The only time we'd use it is for emphasis. Using *cannot* with an accent is doubly strange because the word is unnatural and the accent is foreign. Using *can't* with an accent is fine. English speakers are used to foreign accents and it won't bother us. Worst case scenario, we ask for clarification.

Funny enough... if you say only Can and Cannot and people dont know about it... they might end up thinking (Can't) when you said can. But really the way she explain was great.. now instead of being stressed bout being understood. just skip the a in can when you wanna say can, and say it when you say can't!
@VictorMatthieu
@VictorMatthieu 3 жыл бұрын
@@ericdemelo If you're emphasizing, you may hear it. "I can't come" "You can?" "No, I can'T" -> with a true T The biggest thing to remember is to reduce the vowel in "can" but not in "can't." If you say "can" with the entire vowel, people may think you're saying "can't." Can -> "kn" unless it's a stressed word Can't -> "can" with a short N sound
@DzmitryLazerka
@DzmitryLazerka 8 жыл бұрын
"You can come" vs "You can't come" are easily differentiated by what word you put the stress on: "come" or "can't", not by pronunciation of "can" vs "can't".

@Hello World! Actually, modern American is closer to Old English than British. British was impacted by the languages of neighboring countries throughout their history, while American has preserved Old English sounding. Europeans moved to North America and brought this Old British there. It was obviously changing but not that much as British in the UK.

I think it may be easier to figure out the difference by paying attention to the *whole* sentence and listening where the sentence's stress lies. In the negative sentence, the stress is in 'can't': "I *can't* come"; in the afirmative sentence, the stress is in the predicate (in this case, in 'come'): I can *come*.

This is the advantage of British English because we pronounce 'can' as /kæn/ and 'can't' as /kɑ:nt/ . . The difference in the vowel sound makes it clear which one is being used even if you cant hear the 't'.

@Ana_crusis

Adel-Alexander Aldilemi It is the British. *_If_* commonwealth countries do the same it's *because* they are following the *British* pronunciation of the people who brought the language to that country, i.e. The British, not because they 'accidentally' happen to have the same pronunciation. Nor, for that matter, is it just commonwealth countries. It is *anyone* in the world who has learnt British English. It's also an irrelevant point. The discussion was about a specific difference between American and British pronunciation. That some other people may follow the British pattern is neither here nor there for the purposes of this discussion. Futhermore, I have grave doubts as to whether your statement is even true. Unlike you, I haven't been to all the commonwealth countries to check their pronunciation of " can / can't" but as you can see if you look here: thecommonwealth.org/member-countries there is quite a large and diverse list of members and I doubt they all follow the British pronunciation pattern of those words. Lastly, as a teacher of English myself for about 30 years I don't really appreciate kids from other countries trying to tell me about my own language.

You can also group the "can" and the verb that follows. For affirmatives, the stress goes to the verb ( I can PLAY) and the can is softer. On the negative the stress is on the CAN'T and the verb is softer.

I consider this the best video ever on this subject - which is a very important one for non-native speakers. In my native country most English teachers don't even know what a shwah sound is. Luckily for them they are rarely confronted with having to talk with a native English speaker and that's a luxury that I - as a non-native English speaker living in North America (actually in Canada) - don't have. Thank you is not strong enough to express my gratitude. Megathanks to you.

Sure, that's your word choice, but normally people don't use it in everyday speech, they only use it when they want to emphasize something important.

Yes, it is erfectly acceptable to use "cannot" in speech. I either use "cannot" or always say the "t" in "can't" to avoid confusion with "can".

I teach English and I always pronounce the "t" in "can't." You can use "cannot" if you prefer, but it's more common to hear "can't."

Wouldn't it be much easier to just say 'cannot' instead of 'can't'? Affirmative: ''I can do this'' / Negative: ''I cannot do this'' Affirmative: ''She can come with me'' / Negative: ''She cannot come with me'' I wouldn't mind to pronounce that extra syllable in order to make myself understood. I don't know why 'can't' has to be abbreviated, it just makes everything much more confusing!

Try just releasing the Stop T of 'can't' into the following word! So "can't take" would really sound like "can'take".

It's difficult to rely on a shwa or /æ/ sound, especially when Spanish only has 5 vowels in pronunciation. I usually rely on the final "t" or in the context, for instance: (Sorry, I can't go, I need to study) NEGATIVE (Of course! I can speak English, I've studied it for seven years) POSITIVE

+Andrés F. G. Cardona In British English (unlike americans) we pronounce 'can' as /kæn/ and 'can't' as /kɑ:nt/ . This means it's much easier to hear the difference.

Many of us Spanish speakers are practical or lazy when talking. English aren't the exception. For those who can't tell the difference (me before watching this video) look for glottal stop. Great video Rachel! thank you!

I think the sound at the end of the word "can't" Is just like the sound at the first of the letters ( a - e - i - o - u ) when they come at the beginning of a sentence It's called "hamzah" in my language Arabic, and it's also a letter in it, so it was easy for me to understand what you wanted to tell us about the end of word "can't" :-) Thank you very much for the video it really helped me

+Nicole do nascimento Use a British Accent. In British English it's much easier because we pronounce 'can' as /kæn/ and 'can't' as /kɑ:nt/ (like the sound in the word 'far') The difference in the vowel sound makes it clear which one is being used even if you cant hear the 't'.

In the middle of a sentence I can see the difference, but when these words are ending a phrase, they sound exactly the same to me. KZbin doesn't notice the difference either. Try to insert automatic legends and you'll see KZbin spells "CAN" both words when you say "I told her I can / can't" ... It is so hard to get the difference 😭

It is interesting that no-one comes and post a comment about the subject since it is very intriguing. Although with training and patience students can master the difference between CAN and CAN'T, for many Brazilian students it has been taught only the CAN OR CANNOT until they get used to the abrupt way of sound CAN'T. nice video and clear explanation. :-)
