Hey how's it going? I have a question about the word VEGETABLES. Most people pronounce the "t" as a true t, right? But my question is: is it ok if pronounce the "t" as a flap t/ fast d? It would sound something like this ˈvəjədəb(ə).According to Google the pronunciation with a flat t/fast d is acceptable but honestly, I've never heard American English speakers pronouncing it like this. What do you think?
@tarlespeech
@tarlespeech 4 жыл бұрын
Sure, you can say the flap T. That being said, a regular T is OK too. It is all about clarity. If people understand you that is most important.

Very helpful video, thank you! Quick question though: I've heard 'excess' being pronounced differently, sometimes the stress is on the first syllable, sometimes on the second. Is that because one is a noun and the other a verb or a difference in accents? And which one would it be when you say 'to excess' (as in 'a great amount') ? Thanks again, love from Germany :) ❤

Hello! Love to you from the US! In regards to: I've heard 'excess' being pronounced differently, sometimes the stress is on the first syllable, sometimes on the second. Is that because one is a noun and the other a verb or a difference in accents? And which one would it be when you say 'to excess' (as in 'a great amount') ? I would say to ek SES using the verb rule but it is really an adjective which shouldn't follow that rule. Strange, but that is how I say it. I need to make a new lesson for that.

@@tarlespeech Alright, thank you for your reply! It is certainly a bit confusing when words are spelled the same way but have different pronunciations 😅 (and now you're telling me there are exceptions to the verb rule?! oh god... xD) A video on that would be really cool :)

Access v/s Assess. In India, many people pronounce both of these words as "Assess". Even those who did their schooling in an English medium school, do this mistake. That's really surprising. ... And this is not the sole example. There are many more.
