I've always wondered if maybe British English is easier to learn? The vowel sounds are usually much more relaxed in terms of mouth movements. "Girl" for example.

Rachel, i have more than 20 years learning and improving my english, and up until now I have been struggling pronouncing these two words: Girl, Murder, Murderer. Combining RL, DeR is challenging. Saying Girl sounded like I was drowning, the tip of the tongue was so curled up so when changing to the Dark L, the tip of my tongue flapped making the flap T sound to change to the Dark L. 20 years... until NOW. I finally understood my BIG mistake, I was making too much effort curling the tongue up, It needed to be way more relaxed so the transition to the Dark L is smooth. I want to cry :'( I finally made a perfect Girl pronunciation. It took me an hour to finally make my brain control my tongue correctly. THANK YOU RACHEL. You explanations are honestly THE BEST. Please make a video with MURDER and MURDERER pronunciation. A BIG BEAR HUG.

Hi, Rachel. As to the darl L, you said the tip of tongue comes up to the roof of mouth. My question is that does the tip touch the roof? This is confusing for me now, though I should focus on the back part of my tongue.
@rachelsenglish5 жыл бұрын
Hi! You will bring the tongue up to make contact with the roof of the mouth when you are linking into vowel or diphthong sounds. This is called "finishing" the Dark L, and is really only required to make the Dark L clear in linking situations. When the Dark L is the final sound in a phrase or is linking into a consonant sound, you don't need to make this contact. You are absolutely right to focus on the back part of your tongue for the Dark L.

@rachelsenglish9 жыл бұрын
+sebastian alegria Thanks for the video suggestion!
@Slevana59 жыл бұрын
+sebastian alegria Great is used as in 'I am doing great' or something usually of importance or size. As in The Great King or The Great Deku Tree. It's used to refer to someone or something of importance. Big is just augmentative like a big dog. It's a noticeable difference in size. Huge is of a greater size than big so that's another. Grand is much like great as well because it is used more for importance or to show how kind of majestic something is. Like The Grand Canyon, in this case it is telling how massive it is and how great it is. Grand is greater than great so take note of that much like how huge is bigger than big. If you also want to use the word "awesome" properly then it's to describe something of an immense size. As if you are in awe of how big the object is. Jupiter is of awesome size for instance.
