How to Pronounce 'ÃO' in BRAZILIAN PORTUGUESE - Finally!! Today you will have all the help you need to articulate better and make the 'ÃO' sound. Not only will you get some tips on how to pronounce 'ÃO' in Brazilian Portuguese, but also will practice words with 'ÃO' a lot! To make the lesson more fun, I have selected parts of Brazilian folk songs that are traditionally played at a festival held in Brazil in midwinter, called 'Festa Junina' for you to learn how to pronounce nasal vowel sounds in Portuguese.
Why is it important to pronounce ÃO correctly? First of all, to make yourself understood more easily. Second of all, there are some words in Portuguese in which the only difference between them (besides their meanings) is the nasal aspect.
For example, 'sal' (salt) x 'são' (3rd person plural of 'ser' in the present tense); 'mal' (bad) x 'mão' (hand); only to name a few. See how important it is to learn and practice pronunciation?

Olá! Tudo bem? The key to producing the *ão* and other nasal sounds lies in letting air flow through both the mouth and nose at the same time. Maybe you could try the following: Step 1 - Hum a note (like *mmm),* that will help you feel the vibrations in your nose and the back of your throat. This resonance is similar to what happens when pronouncing nasal vowels in Portuguese. Step 2 - Once you can feel the hum in your nose, open your mouth while keeping the hum going. This action combines the nasal vibration with the mouth, closely resembling the nasal vowel sound *ão.* Step 3 - Practice by alternating between humming and trying to say *ão* as in *não* or *pão.* Little by little say the complete words - *não* (no), *pão* (bread), and *coração* (heart). Think of the *hum* feeling when pronouncing the *ão* sound.

Honestly, this is the first time I have seen 'Dãrion' spelled like that. Here, in Brazil, 'Dário' (with a strong open 'a') and 'Dario' (with a strong 'i') are more common. ☺
