I used this video with my adult ESL students this morning, and it was the first time that I have heard them laugh out loud at an instructional video. They were interested and seemed to really enjoy watching it. You are so great together! This video was very helpful and I look forward to using more of your lessons in the future!

So I noticed that the teacher on the left said pickle"s" instead of pickle"z" at 5:00, and then the one on the right corrected her to say picklezzz, and I'm confused because it is clear when the word is in a sentence, for example pickles are good, you'd say picklez z-are good, but when it's the last word in a sentence people would often just say pickle"s", unless when they want to emphasize the plural word in which case they would say pickle"z". Could you explain/confirm this?
@ExtraEnglishPractice
@ExtraEnglishPractice 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Sueyeon! This is a good point. Often, when a sound that is normally voiced is placed next to an unvoiced sound (which includes silence), it too becomes unvoiced. Therefore, while "pickles" would often end in a Z sound, at the end of a sentence, it may sound more like an S. We will have to make another video someday explaining this pronunciation rule!

Hi, how should the plural of theory (theories) be pronounced? I have heard some native speakers pronounce [s] at the end of theories. But based on the rule in your video, it should be [iz] because of the vowel ending [i]. I look forward to your answer. Thanks.

For a long time I have been looking for something helping me , how to pronounce the (s) when making plurals! Now I feel much more better about that. But I have a question: Why do we say (teachers) with "s" not with "z", although I thing it belongs to the second group you have mentioned it ?

Hi Azaad. Well, we focus on Canadian/American pronunciation, so you might need to ask a British English teacher about this. Usually, in our English, voiceless stops are not aspirated (or aspirated to a lesser degree) if they follow S ("stop" , "skate", "risk") or precede L/R ("slide", "print"). This is true whether it's the beginning or the end of the word. Good luck!
