Is it S or Z? American English Pronunciation Rules

I am an English teacher and some of my Korean students have struggled with the "Z" sound. Thanks for the excellent presentation. I have been recommending that they watch this video.

For native German speakers: /S/ seems to be something like ss (e.g. Klasse) and ß (e.g. reißen), while /Z/ seems to be something which is mostly written with s in German (e.g. Nase, reisen). Not completely sure however.

Thanks a lot, really helpful. Almost everything you find on this topic on the internet is only about plural and 3rd person -S, as if the letter were only used there. I'd like to add that word-initial S is always /s/ and never /z/, being a native German speaker I made that mistake for many years because no pronunciation guide ever mentions it.

for Portuguese people it is not difficult because we have the same sound in our language but Spanish there is no Z sound.

Sorry, I'm a native Portuguese speaker and we do not have any problem with the sounds you mention, whatsoever. Spanish speakers battle with them though.

The big problem about pronunciation is The words in The past. Whem we have "Ed" in end of word. Éxemplo; workED, jumpED, ect.

I just don't get why, (in American English) you have both the letter C and the letter Z. To me they sound totally the same. And I wouldn't wonder if you easily could skip Z all together.
