Literally laughed out loud at that video thumb image! 🤣Seriously though this is very helpful for me. I was just in HCMC for a week this month and met a very nice woman there whom I've been corresponding with every day since and we help each other with English and Vietnamese. So this is useful as I do struggle with pronunciations.

Your vids are always so professionally presented. You must work so hard on them. I am coming closer to fulfilling my dream towards the possibility in relocating to Vietnam in-so-far as I have just taken up a job which requires me to work 4 weeks on and 4 weeks off. I intend to spend the 4 weeks off researching where I want to spend most of my time. Toward that end I have downloaded your book which is equally well presented

Thank you for showing all these Names in nothern and southern dialect. I've been to Vietnam one month ago and I was concentrating on learning northern dialact phrases. I've konwn that there are many differences between the dialects before I travelled to Vietnam, but I thought they will understand the northern dialect in the south as well. But often they didn't understand what I try to say. For example r = s in the north, but r = could be something sounds like "our r"

Hi Vân, thank you for your video, because pronouncing of first name correctly is essential in Vietnam because you don't address people by their last name but by their first name. And thanks to your 27 years of experience with Vietnamese, you can also tell the difference between pronunciation in the North and the South. By way of thank you, I have 40 years of experience in teaching and developing teaching materials, so I would like to give something back. What you can assume when you make a video about pronouncing Vietnamese names is that the viewer has at least heard a few hundred times that Vietnamese has 6 tones, with which diacritics they are interpreted and how they are pronounced. So you could have easily left out that part, and instead you could have watched the beginning of your video again, because there you give the exact example with your own name of why the pronunciation of Vietnamese is so difficult. Because it turns out: the wrong pronunciation has nothing to do with the tones but with how you pronounce the [a]. In my video "Why don't they understand my Vietnamese?" I explain that Vietnamese has more than 30 vowels, but the Latin alphabet only has 6. With the help of a few diacritics and some combination options you can get a bit further, but there are still a lot of vowel sounds left that do not correspond to any can be expressed in writing in some way. The mispronunciation of Vietnamese words is mainly due to the inability to distinguish or produce these sounds, those few tones are not really the problem, after all, we also use them in English ... but then they are not indicated. In short, a good introduction to how to pronounce the vowels would have been a lot more interesting than yet another tone repetition. By the way, in my video I say that ten minutes of attention for the tones is more than enough, and you did a great job in I believe 1 minute.

i think if you want to learn how to pronounce these names you should look up the vowels and the consonant clusters because they are what are not pronounced as an english (or most roman alphabet languages) would expect. for example knowing if a word ends in "ong" or "ung" /ng/ will come out [m]
