I think this is my first KZbin comment, but thanks for this post! I teach ESL in Huntington Beach and it's the first time having all Vietnamese speaking students. I tried my hardest to learn by their teaching, but I was butchering their names so I was hoping KZbin would help me out. I literally sat through this several times and think I can now pronounce their names a little better when I see them again this Monday! :)

Dan, my girlfriend is an English teacher in Rach Gia, Vietnam and she absolutely love your videos. She teaches English to children and she teaches Vietnamese to foreign business workers. She said that your videos are very helpful. I am also Vietnamese but my family have moved to the US since 1980 so I speak both English and Vietnamese. I absolutely understand the challenges that Americans faces when they have to pronounce Vietnamese words. I understand that some Americans find it easier when I associate certain words with native words that they are use to saying in order to pronounce certain Vietnamese words correctly. For example, I have taught my friends to pronounce the word "Nguyen" as similar to the word "Win" as in, "I Win!!". Most people would get it right away. I often find that I have to get pretty creative with how I teach people to properly pronounce certain words by using associated words or sounds that people are use to hearing. I fully understand that there are certain letters that the English language do not have common related sounds to reference. These are more difficult and challenging to tackle. Regardless, I'm glad that I am well-verse enough in both language to find a common ground of understanding for people of both ethnicity. Thanks for producing your awesome videos! Wow, this is so cool. I adopted my daughter, Ngo Thui Trang, nearly ten years ago now. In the beginning, when we were still in Ireland but got our referral we told everyone that her name was Trang, pronouncing it phonetically. Even after we had been in Hanoi for 8 weeks and had our beautiful little girl for the last three weeks we continued to call her Trang as in English until one day a very nice elderly Vietnamese Lady met me at the hotel reception and I was holding the baby and she asked me her name. Well, when I told her she immediately corrected my pronunciation but I found it very hard to make the exact sound that she did. To me, the closest I could come to it was to say 'Chang' and that became her name to this day. I have often wondered if I was way off with my pronunciation until I found this video of yours today and couldn't believe when I saw the word 'Trang' come up and how you said it. All I can say is that it still sounds like 'Chang' to me and I was delighted and can't wait to show it to her. Maybe I am not 100% but it is not too far off. Also thrilled to find words that show how the other parts of her name should sound. Thank you so much.

If you pronounce "Trang" as "Chang", it's pretty ok too. Because in daily speaking people who have the southern vietnamese accent (including me still pronounce "tr" into "ch". So you could improve that by trying to say /t/ sound in "tip", then /r/ sound in "red" repeatedly and faster each time until you could merge 2 sounds into one. By the way, you should type her name to Thuy, the two pronounce 99.99% the same, but "Thui" could be read as "stink", and "Thuy" is an actual name (middle or first) , i guess it means "pretty" (i don't use this word much except for name). Or, you could get the sound "tr" from the English word "inTEResting" the pronounce of this word is like "inTResting", so it should work :D

In my opinion, this is a much more accurate way to pronounce the name: Duy= Zoo-E and make it fast. That sound more like it, I used this to make all my Malaysian lecturers to correctly say my name. Before that, all of them was pronouncing it like "Đũy" (omg) or "Đui" (I'm not blind for buddha-sake). Thanks Mr. Hauer for this video.

I'm glad I didn't pronounce it too badly. To be safe, I pronounced it in Chinese pin yin for most parts. The rest i used romanization eg. PH, KH, NG. Thanks for this video. It helped me with my work. Had to pronounce international names.

Lol, that happened to me a while ago. I and my colleague went on a business to the US to support a shipyard. My colleague's name is Quy, but people there found it difficult to pronounce Quy as the way it should be. Then, to make it easy, they called him /kju/ (as letter Q only). One time when we got together and tried some food, one of my American coworkers called out our names to get us to come join the crowd. But instead of saying "Phuc, Quy...", He cracked a joke saying "FUCK YOU..." Lol, we hadn't noticed how offensive our names combination was before that :D

For anyone wondering this gentleman is speaking in a generic Northern Vietnamese dialect. Thus, the pronunciation for the other regions is different. Gi- is more like a 'y' sound in the Central and Southern varieties and -n normally becomes -ng, -nh always becomes -n but the preceding vowel changes etc.

Because us Vietnamese in the US or other countries try to approximate our names too. So 90% of the time we approximate things badly from Vietnamese to English maybe because we don't know enough pronunciation of English itself. So Dan did the pronounce pretty correct in this video. So about Tuấn: t-wu-a-n, twuan with the a in apple is close enough

Even the "official" Northern pronunciations are not "accurate" if you want to be technical. No living dialect pronounces everything the way it's written.

Chuc Quang You're right in that the Northern dialects tend to preserve more of the older pronunciations of a Vietnamese long gone. However it's not good to say that other regions speak improper and inaccurate Vietnamese based solely on the writing system. The writing system is secondary to the spoken form. No reasonable person would ever say that Australians and Americans speak improper and inaccurate English. Therefore it's just wrong to say that the Northern dialects are "more correct" because "correct" depends on the individual dialect. Về mặt tiếng miền Bắc giữ cách phát âm gần gủi với tiếng nói của ngày xưa hơn thì bạn lại nói đúng. Tuy nhiên, ngôn ngữ luôn luôn thay đổi và phát triển. Tiếng nói ngày nay không giống tiếng nói 400 năm trước. Chữ viết/ký tự chỉ là một hệ thống dùng để truyền thông tin giữa con người qua một đoạn thời gian hay khoảng cách xa. Không có cá nhân có lý trí nào cả sẽ nói rằng người dân của nước Úc và Mỹ lại phát âm tiếng Anh sai hoặc nói tiếng Anh không đúng theo tiêu chuẩn. Đây là vì các phương ngữ đều có tiêu chuẩn phát âm và từ vựng riêng của họ. Sự đúng hay sai là tuỳ theo phương ngữ của cá nhân. Về mặt lấy tiếng người Hà Nội dùng làm tiêu chuẩn của cả nước, đây chỉ là vì lý do chính trị mà thôi.

Good effort and pronunciation is okay, but still not native. And I am very familiar with miền bắc pronunciation - even for there, it still isn't quite right. Your k's are too aspirated and should not be, for example..they should be much closer to an American/Canadian English G than an American English K or hard C. Your tr's are also way too aspirated and should be closer to an English J than an English ch. Your syllables ending in 'anh' should not rhyme with the American/Canadian pronunciation of the words 'hang'/'sang'/'rang', but should be a combination of ai and ng. Be careful with 'quốc' - you pronounced it like cuấc, with the U being given too much length instead of making it like a W. Quốc should basically sound more like kgwốc - the u functions much more like a W consonant. Also, even if in modern Vietnam, Hanoi dialect is the 'official,' many expat communities are primarily comprised of southerners...some of whom are very anti-northern Vietnam (because of hard feelings left over from the war - like it or not)...I even met a Viet American who tried to say that none of the Vietnamese dialects have a Z sound, which is obviously not true...but that goes to show just how southern many of the overseas Viet diaspora are...My point is, a Southern dialect set of pronunciations world be very useful if you could make such a video.

+Nguyễn Trường bạn nên để ý kỹ về việc phát âm của người Việt hiện giờ nhé. Thật ra hiện giờ đã hình thành 2 hệ thống phát âm khá chuẩn là "Chuẩn Hà Nội" và "Chuẩn Sài Gòn", cả 2 trường phái này đều cố gắng nói gần đúng nhất với "chuẩn tiếng Việt", tuy nhiên ngoài phát âm còn là ngữ điệu và cách dùng từ cho nên vẫn có thể phân biệt 2 trường phái trên. Đại khái là người Hà Nội cố gắng phát âm đúng tr, ch chứ ko nhập chung như kiểu khi hát, cũng vậy, d, r, gi được phát âm khác biệt rõ ràng... người SG thì họ sửa các lỗi như phân biệt âm cuối của "n" với "ng", "t" với "c" cũng như sửa cả lỗi phát âm "dấu hỏi" và "dấu ngã". Không tầm thường đâu. Còn cách phát âm khi hát là thống nhất để dễ lướt từ theo những nốt nhạc nhanh và 1 số từ cần lướt nhẹ để bài hát ko quá nặng, chứ cách hát chưa bao giờ là "Chuẩn tiếng Việt" (lười dịch, đọc đỡ, :D )

I don't know Vietnamese but because I'm Cantonese, I can infer the Chinese characters (Hantu) of a Vietnamese word or phrase. Phuc （福）comes from the phrase Hanh Phuc, meaning happiness or prosperity. You can see this character as a display during the Lunar New Year in Vietnam. Bich （碧） is jade. As for Dat, I don't know.
