Thanks for the video I followed it about 3 months ago and so far I have around 15 rooted cuttings. I found I have to be really careful moving them into individual pots because its really easy to rip the roots off so when checking I scoop my hand under the soil and pull the whole thing up

Hi, I have a California Redwood that's about a century old in my yard, Pacific northwest, and want to clone it. I am thinking of air layering a branch that is low and reachable. Will a horizontal branch, if I can get it to grow roots, complain about being turned vertically to become a trunk? Also, what is the most reliable and easiest way to clone this big beast?

@Vandz
@Vandz 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Michael, Cheers for the sub. I haven't really propagated giant sequoia from cuttings. I think I did a couple in the past and one took, but haven't really looked into it too much. I don't think they take as cutting so well. Definitely worth trying this with them and taking off most of the foliege. I normally focus on growing them from seed as it's easier then the dawns are from seed. The giant sequoias are so root space hungry like the coastal redwoods though. Always need to plant them into very large containers or control them in the ground. Dawn's roots don't need as much room to grow out. You'll have to let me know how you get along. I'll do some experimenting with them in spring.

Thanks a lot for this info dude. Can I ask if you ever take cuttings late summer? I live in NYS and sell these trees as seed grown seedlings 6-12" tall. But I am terrible at making cuttings. I have many double and even triple leaders now and plan on chopping those leaders and making them cuttings. Is this even viable late summer early spring?
@Vandz
@Vandz 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Mike, Early spring as the buds break as Hardwood cuttings. Or as I've shown here as soft wood cuttings early June. You'd be better off waiting until March now. I actually find they grow stronger as cuttings then from seed.

Yes very similar practice. Though each tree species vary in regards to if they'll take or not. Example, Japanese maples do not take well and I'd only use hardwood cuttings. Dawn's are the only trees that.. So far will easily take using the growth from this year. Softwood cuttings.

Sorry bro but I've been doing dawn redwood cuttings for years and your method is wrong, you take the cuttings in winter when the tree is dormant that way you don't have to strip off all the leaves and it's easier on the cutting to recover. Then you gently slice off some of the bark and dip it in rooting hormone and plant it in a coarse potting soil in a mini greenhouse like a Nano dome to keep the humidity in so it Roots quickly
@Vandz
@Vandz 2 жыл бұрын
I do it both ways. Winter and sumer. Both work for me. So it's not "wrong"

@@Vandz I'm in arborist and we propagate several hundred of tree cuttings and the best success is when the tree is dormant and lost its foliage. I mean you took a cutting with foliage on it and you strip it all off so you might as well just wait till the tree is dormant and you don't have to do that.

@@Vandz No. That's the problem with people today (especially in the bonsai community). They're so concerned about being polite, demure and PC that they don't say what they mean and give honest feedback. People are SOOO invested with their plants, that they've become almost incarnate and if someone criticizes a plant, it's as if they've insulted them, their wife/spouse/partner/child and they take GREAT offense to it. They take criticism SO hard and SO personal that it almost crushes their egos and their souls! I am a blunt and to-the-point type of person (probably comes from my career in the military). If I give my opinion, it's honest and how I fell. It's not wrapped in a lot of niceties and politeness. MANY people that deal with bonsai's are meek, mild, polite, soft-spoken, "Mr. Rogers"-like, almost-feminine. I am not. I say what I mean and if that offends you, oh well. If you do not want open, honest, frank (and yes blunt) comments ON THE INTERNET, then don't post. Stay off of it. You're not going to get 100% of the people fawning over what you have done. "Different strokes for different folks". YOU may think that what you have created is the greatest thing since Michelangelo carved David, others may not think so and if you post on the internet, where the ENTIRE PLANET can see what you have done, don't expect 8 BILLION people to agree with you.

That's basically of what he did; he cut most leaves off, then he used rooting hormone and put them in the substrate. Trees were rooting out of branches way before anyone came up with specialized equipment for it (that would work, but Id rather make something out of some plastic bottles than use pay $50 dollars to have most cuttings still die. They need to stay hydrated so most leaves need to go off, redwoods have a different system for moving water than angiosperms and it isn't as efficient so they need more prunage, and assuming you have a good soil microbiome then there will be beneficial fungi helping it under the surface when it comes to nutrient uptake and they keep it from getting infected. One thing that you might actually want to do different is use some mycorrhizae.
