This video is great timing. I am in zone 7b. I have 2 kinds of lavender in my garden. Not sure what type, but will have to research, lol. This weekend, I will get some cuttings and try propagating. I am so excited! Thank you!

@TheLavenderFarmer

@@TrickleCreekFarm if the temperature is still high you cannot because the cuttings wil wilt! But in the middle of the autumn is the perfect time to start. I will make a video about it when the weather is suitable for making Lavender cuttings! 😊

@@TheLavenderFarmer I appreciate your prompt response, thank you! Perhaps you can address these questions as well in that video: If I put them in the ground when it is cooler will they over winter just fine with some mulch? (We dropped to 7 degrees F in February)As well, what is the best spacing for ease of transplant in the spring? Is it helpful to introduce a bit more sand in the cutting bed to help with root release ? Again, thank you kindly.
@TheLavenderFarmer
@TheLavenderFarmer 5 ай бұрын
@@TrickleCreekFarm so....the cuttings will root very well directly into the ground planted from October, but amend the soil with sand, but only for propagating objectives. The spacing between the plants is different for every species. The angustifolia are smaller and i let between plants on the row 50 - 60 cm, and between the rows around 100 and 130 cm. Most of the x intermedia types are bigger so i let at least 70 cm between plants on the same row, and at least 130 cm between the rows! I hope it helps! 🤗 I will make a separate video about it if you think its useful!

I would like to propagate in August, should I use hardwood or softwood cuttings? Thanks so much.
@TheLavenderFarmer
@TheLavenderFarmer 6 ай бұрын
In August i think its still hot so i would try softwood cuttings covered with plastic bag for retaining the humidity inside. Place the cuttings somewhere they have light but not direct sunlight. In the fall, October, November, i use hardwood cuttings planted directly in the ground or in propagating trays!

for semi-sunny weather around 17-20C, what soil mix do you recommend for growing lavender in pots? i tried a potting mix with peat moss and pumice, and the soil was still very moist after a week's time, causing the lavender to die.
@TheLavenderFarmer
@TheLavenderFarmer 2 ай бұрын
So, i was using a mix with peat alot of my growing years, but the lavender didn't resist more than 2-3 years in a pot. So, i tried a different one. Try using 5 part universal soil and 5 parts compost. To this mix put 3 parts of perlite for good drainage. This will retain moist, have food and good drainage. Water the lavender only when you see the leaves showing you lack of water. Its not a problem if the soil still has water after a week. As long as you have drainage. So use perlite for drainage! 🤗❤️

@@TheLavenderFarmer what do the leaves look like when it needs water? currently, some leaves on my small lavenders are yellowing, some have shriveled and are brittle, and some leaves have tips that are dark gray. these lavenders are in 80% cactus mix/20% potting mix, so there should be good drainage. thanks for your help!
@TheLavenderFarmer
@TheLavenderFarmer 2 ай бұрын
@justinm5340 when the lavender needs water the leaves wilt show sign of wilting and if the plant has flower spikes, they will go down . If the leaves turn yellow thats to much water or to much fertilizer, or the difference between the temperature from night and day is to high, if the tips of the leaves turn brown its quite normal sometimes, especially in the winter, but they will recover. The only thing you have to be careful is too much water....

Great video and very informative. Before I saw your video, I had bought lavender plant from Home Depot. I repotted it from the cup to a larger pot. Can I take a cutting from it and put them in the ground or starter trays as you did?
@TheLavenderFarmer
@TheLavenderFarmer 9 ай бұрын
Yes you can, but now its kinda warm outside, the plant is probably green! So take the little cutting, put it in a pot water it and cover it with a plastic transparent bag. Or if you have a humidity dome its better. Put the cuttings somewhere there is light but not direct sunlight, it will melt the cutting, and from time to time let a little air inside. I propagate mostly in the early spring and and late fall because iys colder so i dont have to be careful with the cuttings! Thank you, hope you are successful! 🤗

Hello. I live in the Philippines, a country located near the equator so we only have rainy and hot seasons. I can grow lavender cuttings here and make them grow in pots. Can lavender thrive and flower in areas near the equator like the Philippines?
@TheLavenderFarmer
@TheLavenderFarmer 3 ай бұрын
Hello, i have some friends here in Romania that are from Philippines! 🤗 So...its complicated with lavender and Philippines because of the high humidity. But....the most important thing in growing Lavender is to have a very, very good drainage. Lavender and soggy soil means the end of it. So If you can resolve that....i think its possible!

Interesting, I was about to buy 10 new plants because I didn't think Lavender was that easy to propagate. I have one decent plant, if it's still alive in Spring then I'll start propagating from it and save myself some money. How wide do they usually spread out? Can they crush weeds once they grow big enough? Thank you!
@TheLavenderFarmer
@TheLavenderFarmer 3 ай бұрын
It depends on the lavender type. There are over 300 lavender types, from small - 60 cm spread, to huge - over 140 cm spread. With the weeds is always a problem. They will find a way to grow under the plant, even if its big, but after the plant is mature enough....like 3 years, it wont be a problem for the plant....only for the visual! :)

@@TheLavenderFarmer my back hurts from removing weeds also that's why I asked :) Not sure the type because I threw the seeds package away after they frustrated me. So it could be any type, I'm just happy it finally grew. I'm tired of using mulch and would prefer living mulch to help at least reduce the weeds.
@TheLavenderFarmer
@TheLavenderFarmer 3 ай бұрын
@@AymanEl-Ghazali i would not count on that. I use the weed cloth exactly for that. Its going to be hard if you count only on the ability of the lavender to suppress weeds! 😊

@@AymanEl-Ghazali be careful with mulching! If you are using bark or something that keeps the moist underneath and you have a rainy season, the roots of the plant could rot!
