I’m so thankful for this channel. Before this I would get my information from cannabis grow forums and it was a lot of “this one weird trick” hocus pocus. I’m glad to have actual science now. Is there a gardening in Canada subreddit or something, where we can show each other our plants and stuff? Love the channel thank you!

OK, got my mites. Dumped the contents into my plant pots - a little in this one, a bit in that one. Let it get on the leaves, etc... left the containers in the pots as well. How long before these guys start working? Right now I've got tons of mites on the plants making webs. Are any of these web spinning mites my good mites? I have a lot of mites, so I am hoping that these are the right ones or my plants are not going to last long at all at this rate.

If you dont use up all of the bag of mites, can you store them to use later? If so how to store? Or do you dump the unused ones in your bag of extra potting mix (which I think is where I got my recent infestation of fungus gnats. Sigh.

@GardeningInCanada2 жыл бұрын
You should only buy enough to use and one go. They do not store long-term. And you would simply apply them when you see an issue. Typically it’s a one time application to get rid of any sort of heavy infestation.

@@GardeningInCanada Yeahhh 😢 I left the herbs in our extra bathtub for a while and quarantined them off with neem and soap baths. Shot in the dark here, but what do you know about ground cover as an alternative to grass? My front yard is dead-dead (purchased the house in the middle of summer - took possession with overheated grass - it never recovered), so I've been thinking of creeping thyme, but don't know anything about the varieties, if weeds grow up through it, how long it takes to establish... basically, is it worth it, or is there a better solution. Because I know you'll ask, I'm near Vancouver, BC.

This was so helpful. I want to buy the mites, but I use Bonide systemic in the soil of my indoor plants. I was reading some studies on Imidacloride (the active ingredient) that said mites produce more eggs and live longer in the presence of this chemical. I only remember seeing results for herbaceous mites. Does any of this mean anything for me regarding purchasing predatory mites? Should i still buy them?
@GardeningInCanada3 жыл бұрын
So I’m going to do a video on this. But if the beneficiary mites are eating mites that have consumed the systemic pesticide it’s likely to kill then off.

Hey, I'm starting to get fungus gnats after I've already added these predatory mites to my plants. Is it OK to now water my plants with hydrogen peroxide to kill the fungus gnat larvae or will that also kill my new predatory bugs? These mites are really expensive, so I'm hoping I don't have to order more because I still also have the spider mites. I had a real bad infestation and I'm still hoping the save all the plants.

Any ideas where I can find more info about (soil) mites? White, and mostly in the soil. No springtails. I can't tell if beneficial because i can see disturbed growth and if beneficial, they just took over. Anyway, I couldn't really find much info and I can't make good photos because they are just too small for my limited equipment. So I'm also in the dark what pesticide would work. Wish I would find out the species to know their lifecycle to properly treat after x days and such. Man, by now I honestly I wish I had thrips or sth rather than that cryptic shit. They are deffo not spitermites. No webings and mine actually exploded in moisture. I had a prop box with perlite and tons of mites in it after unknown contamination. They lived also happily in glass containers with plants propagating in water. Any tips super appreciated. Thank you for reading, Ashley

Do you believe that are causing issues above or below ground? I am wondering if trying different predators would take them out. A product like end all is likely too also work on something unidentifiable. this is what is looks like and i use it in extreme cases like this geni.us/g8BCB6Y
@carnigoth3 жыл бұрын
@@GardeningInCanada That's such a good question I sadly cannot answer. Seen some on the plants crawling but the majority chills on the nursery pot itself near the soil. I only assumed due to quantity in the soil, the damage may stem from root damage. The link you gave me didn't work for me sadly. But I checked out End All by Safer? I'm out of luck, because we don't have it here in EU, Ger. But I see it contains pyrethrines. I used those before but they were mixed with rapeseed oil, which I found was a bit heavy on some prayer plants and I have way too many of those divas haha. Didn't see another product yet that hasn't rapeseed mixed in. I swear this is zodiac killer mystery for me. Never used predators and now I'm even more spooked, because - paranoid or not - i felt like the mites were everywhere and I itched like crazy. Thank you for your help

I want to use this to get rid of grubs in my lawn. When is the best time to apply? My lawn has the typical pattern of dead grass due to grubs. Last year, I bought some and put them only on the eaten patches. I don't know how well it worked because it was at the end of the summer. You listed many pests but "grub" was not on the list. It's called "grub" grenade so I guess it works on them. I'm only interested in outdoor use on the lawn.

I am assuming that when you dust your leaves off on a biweekly basis with water this is going to kill the mites as well? Is it a better idea to not dust your plants while these mites are thriving and wait until they've eaten all the food and start to die off
@QuirkyLemon3 жыл бұрын
I am so happy you did this! I'd love to see a little vid on some active mites on your plants so I can see what they look like. I've been using beneficial insects for about 3 months as preventative but it's surprisingly difficult to find anything but anecdotal information on them (specifically do you need to keep reapplying and how often). I'm def switching to this brand :) Also, wondering if nematodes would be a good food source to help maintain and encourage reproduction of predatory mites when using for preventative? I always have way more nematodes that I need and wondering if using them would expand the life of The Good Mites.

I've ordered them from Nature's Good Guys three times, and I have never seen an actual mite moving. I put them on a white paper towel, a dark surface, checked a bunch of times and NEVER saw a live mite. I now have thrips, mealybugs, and possibly spider mites on too many of my plants and I'm super annoyed. I'll keep trying but DANG it's frustrating not knowing if I'm paying for dead bugs or just vermiculite.

If you want to get rid of mites from your household plants is to simply put a layer of sand over the top surfice. Mites are not strong enough to remove the sand in order to lay their eggs into the soil. You can still water and feed (compost tea) your plants as normal.
@GardeningInCanada3 жыл бұрын

I’m really bummed that you can’t get predatory mites in my country only gnat nematodes for which I’m eternally grateful because it’s godsend. You can only get typhlodromus pyri here which are meant for vineyards and outdoor use because they’re known to eat plants when they run out of food 😒 Edit: they must be accessible here to nurseries though because I’ve seen the predatory mites a couple of times on new plants after watering. No idea why they’re not sold in retail too
