You're right on all points! Also, the more expensive mowers have the ability to set the deck higher than cheaper ones. I realized this when I finally stepped up to a zero turn with a steering wheel from Cub Cadet. I have a steep bank on my lakeshore and I'm the ONLY one around that has a ***steering wheel*** zero turn in my area. Everyone that has lap bars on their zero turns end up in the lake at least once. 😉

This well done video is by a Colorado-based firm. Their 3" height minimum is true for most cool-season grasses, but not necessarily for warm-season grasses of the southern states. Here, height depends upon turfgrass variety. Cut St. Augustine tall, but Bermuda short. Zoysia can go both ways depending upon the water and labor you want to put into it. Essentially, shorter cut lawns must be cut more frequently so that you're never removing more than 1/3 of their height. Even with my crappy St. Augustine yard I have to cut more than once every 7 days during the peak of the summer growing season. If I don't, I end up with clobbs of grass leaves smothering the lawn beneath and I end up taking. And I do sharpen my blades several times per season, but probably not every 4 cuts. (I don't work in the industry but years ago I did earn a horticulture degree which included a semester-long turfgrass class.)

I live in Northern Utah I have to mow my lawn 2X per week at 3.5 inches high. If the lawn is not mowed this often it will be too tall to mulch. When you mulch you should only cut off 1/3 of the height of the grass.

Awesome video. I cut my grass at 3.5 and it looks fantastic. In my younger days, I would try to cut it the shortest as possible thinking I wouldn't have to cut it as often. Since I've been doing it right for the last couple of years it does take longer but it looks great. I wish my neighbor cared how his yard looked. His lawn looks horrible and the blades on his lawnmower are crooked so they leave unsightly marks everywhere. Once after I got through cutting grass (3 1/2 hours) he gets on his lawnmower and blows grass clippings on my freshly cut yard! It pissed me off to no end. It sucks you can pick your parents and neighbors.

It takes you 3 1/2 hours to cut your grass!? You should seriously invest in a zero turn mower. I work for a landscaping company and mow on the weekends for extra cash. Even when doing everything myself (mow, string trim, and blow) it never takes more than an hour. Those much larger properties we use zero turns

Very good information, but IMHO it's NOT that most homeowners who cut their own grass too low inadvertently set the lawnmower too low, it's that they cut shorter because they don't want to mow as OFTEN.
@OrganoLawn

We service about 5000 customers and when we inform them that they are cutting their lawn too short they always say, "I am cutting it on the highest setting." Then we go look at their lawn mower and it is on the middle setting. Then they say, "my son cut the lawn last, he must have lowered it because I had it on the highest setting."

Growing up here in Phoenix I was taught to water 2x a week deeply. The Bermuda grass will spread and fill in best. Also to cut it short until it has filled in. I was taught it would help it be tolerant of times with missed watering. After it is reestablished in spring then to cut it ~2". I dont know if it is correct or not. It is just how I was taught back in the late 60s & early 70s. And now, I am moving to Iowa so have to learn how to get rid of the sticker weeds there and what to over seed with and how to care for it. I am 64 and still trying to learn and get better. I've been having issues with my lawn not growing fast, I cannot get it to grow 4 inches, I have not mowed my lawn in 2 weeks, I have fescue, and I use organic's and limestone, my grass is nice a green but no growth, I water every other day, I am in a Zone 9A so we are getting in the hot season, morning sun, usually temps 95 to 115, I had a sold sample done and I was told to add limestone, if I mow my lawn my Honda plastic deck lawnmower only fills a 1/4 of the way, typical smaller front yard in Ca. maybe 800 sq ft. Any ideas?

Another question, how many times can a blade typically be sharpened before it should be replaced? The new blades at Lowe’s etc. come with a dull edge. Are they good enough? Or do folks sharpen a brand new blade as well??

If you are sharpening a blade properly you should be able to get about 100-200 sharpening before it needs to be replaced.

When people cut the lawn to short you destroy your lawns ability to retain moisture in the ground you also stunt proper root growth which helps grow a healthy lawn leaving your grass on the long side promotes healthy root grown and water retention ..

Please pass the word on thank you and have a nice day.,1:04

Just one quibble. The demonstration dealing with the height setting of the mower shows both front and back height adjustments being set to the fifth socket back toward the handle to raise the mower to the "correct height." That may be correct for the mower he's using but didn't work for my Toro. After using this video as a guide I tried it and it cut the first few swaths VERY SHORT. I thought my mower might have been broken but a quick look at my owners manual showed the problem. I can't speak for all TORO's but with my model you need to raise the mower by putting the front adjustment back toward the handle BUT the back wheel adjustment forward toward the front to gain a balance height. My suggestion is that he really should have cautioned to check your manual to see how to properly raise the mower height. Sorry this was so long, just trying to help.

Yes, every lawn mower is different. We only used one as an example and recommend if the lawn mower deck goes down that might be the incorrect direction.

Do these tips (especially height of cut) apply to all grass types? Looks like you have some type of Fescue, I have Bermuda. Thanks.

Our recommendations are for cool season grasses. We do not know much about warm season grasses so it is best to consult a warm season grass expert about Bermuda grasses.
