The first pruning of a just-planted fruit tree is essential for the lifetime health and productivity of the tree. In this video, Orin Martin reviews the shape of the tree to determine what shape, either "open center" or " modified central leader", best suites the structure of the tree.

Your videos contain the best information on the topic of fruit tree pruning I have found on the internet by far. I’d love to see more on other related topics like berry and vine pruning or propagation. This dude seems like he has knowledge to spare.

Would have never thought to hack off so much on a young tree. This guy knows his stuff.

It's looks a bit scary when you first see this type of pruning. But it results in a strong healthy pear tree that will bear fruit for as long as 100-150 years and longer.. There are pear trees in Italy that are more than 250 years old and still in full production.

@@ucscagroecology I cut back several of my young tree with this method, then panicked as all other pruning videos are far less aggressive, now refound your video and feeling comfortable again haha. I do have one question, one of my cuts seem to not been too sharp so the branch/bark around the edge is peeling off and it just isn't a strong cut- I could imagine overtime this might be a problem, would you cut this further back with a new sharp cut, provided there's space for it. Hope it makes sense. Cheers

Someone PLEASE get this poor wise man some sunglasses

Don't think Orin would wear them. He's been working outside nearly 50 years and never wears a hat or sunglasses. He wears shorts on even the coldest, rainy days.

He uses “caliper” in an arborists lingo but in this video associated the term while pointing down near the base of the trunk. In standard practice caliper is associated with DBH (diameter @ breast height) which is roughly 4.5 feet up.

@ucscagroecology 5 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment. In trees, caliper is a relative term. In a bare root tree, caliper is used to determine the diameter of the tree 2 inches above the graft union. If the standard DBH was used for a 2 year old tree, which might not even reach DBH, the caliper would be zero. Here's more info on the topic from Dave Wilson Nursery, the largest supplier of fruit and nut trees in the nations: www.davewilson.com/home-garden/getting-started/buying-fruit-trees/

@@ucscagroecology thank you for your response. I am unfamiliar with small trees and the nursery side. Thanks for the correction and clarification. I learned something. I do enjoy watching your videos. You obviously have a lot of experience and you are a good teacher.

I grafted some hardy pear to a B118, the b118 has Moscow pear in its lineage. Will this take or should I be finding a different rootstock?
@ucscagroecology
@ucscagroecology 2 ай бұрын
B.118 is an apple rootstock. A pear won't take to it because it is a different species. Below is a link to an article by Orin on rootstocks. On page 6 you'll see several pear rootstock reviewed. Also, Orin has 2 videos coming out on this channel next week on rootstocks that may be helpful. chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/agroecology.ucsc.edu/documents/for-the-fruit-grower/rootstock-basics.pdf
