I see most people doing the "mistakes" at my gym. There's one man who does that last mistake to the point of disrupting others. He leans all the way back, so he's lying down on the bench. It's so awkward because there's a leg press machine right behind the row machine, and he has complete disregard for the personal space of the person on the leg press.

I appreciate the instruction, am eager to read through the Form Pocket Book and look forward to your other videos to round out my workout. I'm 70, have widespread arthritis plus degenerating vertebrae, so I'm looking to water aerobics for general flexibility and weights for strength. I've no desire to sculpt my body and have never considered weightlifting, but I want to continue enjoying life and, at my age, I realize that means taking the time to exercise and to do it right. Thanks, guys.

Also, today when i was doing this exercise in the gym, i was keeping it at my abs level but someone in the gym told me to adjust the cable little lower. Can you please advice what is the right level of cable because in our gym we can adjust the height?

I look at exercises a little differently. Does the exercise mimic real world activity, like rowing a boat for example? In that example the back is heavily involved hinging at the hip not just contracting the lats. In trying to describe this I run into a semantic problem: although the lats attach at the back they are functionally an arm muscle, they close the arm angle in relation to the body. Back muscles are the long muscles that parallel the spine that work to extend the back. Bending at the hip while doing cable rows makes this a compound joint exercise as most real world activities are. Enough said, the choice is yours. My credentials: I have a body and I use it.

that's a good logic but what about the spine issues,? that's what worries me the most.

a trainer at my gym told me to keep my back rounded for the entire exercise (so he wants me to be leaning forward like a shrimp), is that incorrect? your form seems more comfortable for the spine ngl

Like he says in the video you want your back muscles/abs to be active as much as possible while limiting spine movement. Once you start going up in weight, slouching forward will be increasing risk of injury to your spine.

I’d find a new trainer before he wrecks your lumbar spine.

@@jordiwa8051 You only increase the risk of injury to your spine, by never training it properly. The spine is not glass. It's meant to be moved. The problem only starts, when someone, who only trained with a straight back, suddenly starts to bend the spine under immense load, when it's not used to it.

@@The_Patbey I can understand that full ROM would be important like with other muscles. For this exercise I just think it's counterintuitive since you're taking some of the strain off the back muscles. Forgive me lord I'm not hitting spine day.

@@jordiwa8051 Have you ever done rows with a moving spine? Youre not taking strain off the back muscles, you even get to stretch them more, which is better for hypertrophy. And, additionally, you get some sweet erector spinae growth, which will get you an even bigger/wider back.
