How To Properly Set Your Seadoo Rotary Valve Timing | Cool Jetski Tools Demo!

In this video I show the proper way to setup the Rotary Valve timing on a Seadoo 717/720 Engine. The tools needed to help with proper setup are a TDC timing tool and a rotary valve timing dial wheel.

I have a 2002 717/720. Are they all 147 degrees and 65.5. Also, can I do this without pulling the motor? Thanks

Yes, all of the 717/720 engines are 147 and 65.5. I will post two pages from the OEM Seadoo manual for a 2002 Seadoo that may help you in my community tab. On a 720 engine ski with no exhaust obstruction you should be able to do the procedure in the ski. Check my community tab for the manual pictures. If you need further help just ask.

@@joshthejetskiguy well thanks. So my last question is this. Hard to start, runs like it's starving at low to half throttle. From half throttle up, runs like a freaking champ. Before I pull this apart, would a rotary valve problem cause this? How can it run so perfectly at higher speeds if there's an issue? Thanks.

@@paulleduc1920 I would be looking more at carb problem from what your describing or a fuel delivery problem. Have you replaced your Tempo grey fuel lines? I made a video on how to verify if you still have them or not. Also if you have had the carb cleaned and rebuilt were genuine Mikuni brand carb kits used or aftermarket. Start at the source, clean your fuel tank out completely, fill with at least 10 gallons premium fuel, Seafoam fuel treatment, and Marine fuel stabilizer to treat any ethanol that may be in the premium fuel. Then start working outward to replacing fuel lines, clean or replace your fuel selector, then clean and rebuild the carb/s. I have a log of all the carbs I have rebuilt if that may help you to see what I check when I tear one down.

@@paulleduc1920 If you're carb has an accelerator pump on it then that may be the reason why you get more power at higher rpm's. The accelerator pump delivers extra fuel when you stomp the throttle. Typically middle to higher rpm's.

i have a 99 GTI with a 717 and it has the 159% rotary valve and if you get TDC on front piston and start your rotary valve at bottom port /360% and use your timing wheel and check the other side it will read 159% and i left it their instead of setting it at 147% and my ski runs like a raped aped love it

That is really interesting to hear, are you not getting any backfiring through the intake/ flame arrestor? Pretty much when the brass rotary shaft gear strips out and the rotary valve is not synced properly immediately you start to get smoke and backfiring through the intake.
