How To Properly Thread The Tensioner On An Old Kenmore Ultra Stitch 8 Sewing Machine

I sewed gazillions of items (clothing, linens, and curtains) for many decades on my grandmother’s Singer treadle sewing machine that she purchased around 1915. In 1998, it was lost in a fire. Recently, someone gave me an old Kenmore zig-zag sewing machine Model 158-17501. I had no clue about adjusting the tension. Your video saved my sanity (that’s important, since I’m in my 80s and plan to resume sewing!). So, Tom, thank you very much! Thank you. My husband bought my machine new back in 1974 for $300 which for a couple living on a $ 5,000 a year graduate school assistanceship was a huge amount of money. I have all the original parts and manual and have to say the machine is built like a Mack truck, but I was constantly in fear of the tension. But now I know what to look for. Well What eact model Sewing machine do you have? Also What materials are you planning to sew? Lastly what thread do you pan to use? Some Info the lighter the fabric the smaller the needle size and the heavier the fabric the larger the needle size. Often the thread you will be using for your sewing project can also determine the type of needle you choose. Singer titanium machine needles are universal and fit all brands including singer, brother, kenmore and other quality sewing machines. Singer color-coded needles make it easy to select the proper needle and size. OMG Thank you, I wasn’t doing it right and thought my machine was broken lol!! Exactly what you mentioned as the problem I wasn’t putting the thread in the tensioner the right way I was resting it on the spring thing there And not threading it into that crevice as you mentioned! So my thread had no tension And the thread kept getting caught down in my machine under down in where the bottom thread gets pulled up!! Thank you! My manual didn't explain which side of the tab on the right of the tensioner that my thread should go so I was going in front of it (closer to me than to the machine). And OMG, was I STRUGGLING with poor tension! But after trying to follow several tutorial videos I finally found this one and you showed very clearly the one part that I was messing up. Now that I've got the tension problems solved I absolutely love my new (very old) Kenmore machine! When the tension was a problem I briefly (and enthusiastically) considered launching it from the roof of the tallest building in my city and going back to 100% hand sewing everything. But now that I know how to work with my machine I'm a lot happier with it and with the results I'm getting.

Took up sewing again after hadn’t sewn in many many years when the covid started. I took my mother in laws old Kenmore 1625 model. Thankfully she took good care of it and all the parts are still with it and the manual too. I’m just having a problem with the tension and hopefully this video helps. A lot has come back to me about sewing but still learning. Noticed the stitching on the underneath look looped. Your point about how important it is to thread made a lot of sense to me after I watched the video. I KNEW that but didn’t do it! DUH! Thank you and hopefully this works.

I have cleaned and oiled the machine but struggled with threading and inserting the bobbin into the bobbin case (figured this out) correctly. Your video was excellent! I knew there was a missing step at the tensioner and your video explained the steps perfectly! I appreciate the extra info about the bobbin tension as well. I’m finding that one of the top threads has good tension and creating a good stitch but the 2nd one is resulting in loops on the top side of the fabric. I have a kenmore 158.130 Not unsurprisingly but the thread that is causing the loops is the one that I have placed behind the tension disks (as directed in another video I watched) as opposed to the one I have placed inside the tension disk as you normally would .

I just bought my very first sewing machine because now that I'm middle aged nothing fits so I'm going to tailor my clothing. It's a Kenmore 12 stitch, I bought it at Goodwill for $10. I know how to press the pedal with my foot and guide the material that's it. So naturally I'm learning how to even put thread in it. I'm grateful for the video... I hadn't done any sewing in years... just too busy... now I'm older... quite a bit older... and I had forgotten how to thread my sewing machine... I never learned properly how to set the tension on my machine.. it's always been by guess and by golly... One more hint... which might help folks with older eyes like mine... I couldn't see to thread the needle... and oh my it was a pain... then I googled and got some suggestions... putting a bit of hair spray on the thread tip and letting it dry is working... Eureka!

The best tip is to use a piece of white paper behind the needle. I like to use the end flaps of small boxes that small items are packaged in. These flaps are sturdy enough to stand on the presser foot and lean against the presser bar. Then with a small light,or flashlight coming from behind needle, you can see the eye easily..

Thomas, I thought that I was to start by feeding the thread around the top disk before feeding that gator mouth guide that directs it down ward into the tension disk. Since it kept coming out, I wrapped it all the way around and then crossed the line on the top wheel/ disk. Is that little wheel/ disk ONLY for bobbin winding?

I chuckle when I hear this is an old machine.. I have my moms 1947 Kenmore and I sew on a 1947 Singer (cast Iron) I love it. I like this machine because of the zig zag feature. I have a question. I found that the machine was not always zig zagging I would have a straight stitch here and there. I was working with a moderate knit fabric. I read the manual and starting messing with the pressure dial at the top of the machine, it didn't help. I packed the machine away and made a note to self "change the needle" could that be the reason I don't get a good zig zag. I would also love to see a youtube on using the buttonhole feature.

Hi Thomas i know this feed is old but i need help . Just got a kenmore ultra stitch 6 which from watching is the 158. My problem is the little wire spring that help with the tension came out from the tension on one side. How do i put it back. Thanks for your help. Much blessings

Can you tell me if you are able to sew with that thick thread? I just bought a whole bunch of it to so outdoor curtains and I have an old Kenmore like yours. Mine is an 1802 from 1971. The thread is called Sunguard B92. Underneath it says type II class 1 size F That means nothing to me, but I want to sew Sunbrella fabric. Thanks!
