How to Properly Treat Your Cheap or Expensive Pocket Knife.

While it may seem odd, I needed to make a video on how to properly treat your knife. I do a lot of dumb stuff, so let this video serve as a disclaimer for my channel. Should you baton? Will batoning hurt my knife. What's a good way to sharpen your blade? What type of steel should you buy? I sort of answer some of these questions, and hopefully if you're new to knives or a pocket knife this is a good place to start. Fixed blades, folding knives, switchblade, and even karambits. Also sorry to my regular subscribers I reused a bunch of footage.

@@AdvancedKnifeBro hey mate, thanks for the great videos, love your style 👍 I've got a few spare guided sharpeners and I'm happy to send you one if you like for blades that aren't suited to the spyderco sharpmaker. Ive got the same one and it's fine for normal sized blades but when you get to machetes and kukris and hatchets or for chipped edges and whatnot, it's not the easiest solution. Anyway, happy to send you one for free-I'll cover postage and all that, no need to do anything other than promise me you'll use it at least twice before you make your mind up about it because it gives great results. Thanks again for the really great videos. I can't tell you how good it is to find content like yours. Take care mate, looking forward to seeing what you come up with next

@AdvancedKnifeBro
@AdvancedKnifeBro 6 жыл бұрын
Coudln't they make those non soft too?
@ian.turnbull
@ian.turnbull 6 жыл бұрын
I guess they could. What I think they are doing is using the screws as a sacrificial part (or the designated weak point). Screws are cheap and easy to replace compared to other parts of a knife. For example, I somehow managed to rip the clip off of my Delica. The thread on the 3 screws was stripped, but the thread in the tapped holes of the liner was fine. Spyderco sent me 3 replacement screws, no questions asked, and I was able to repair the knife myself. However if the screws had been stronger, it is likely I would have damaged the threads in the liner. I doubt Spyderco would send me a free replacement liner. Smarter Every Day has a good video on Shear Pins (same concept, different application) that I recommend. I really enjoy your videos! Keep on keeping on.

If you're willing to take advice from a hunter, gun barrel maintenance oil is great for rust protection on high carbon steel blades. It may be expansive, but if correctly applied it sticks a lot better (and longer) on the steel, doesn't stain it and doesn't grease your hands when you're touching the blade.

Love your videos it's a nice take the typical knife review channel. For the rusting bit polishing them with mineral oil will go a long way. For my blades that are more susceptible to rusting I coat/polish them once a week the rest receive that once a month. Mineral oil is the stuff that chemistry teachers use to keep more reactive metals like sodium from sparking/exploding by keeping it away from both both water and air. By that logic it also prevents rusting.

"There is no price point where a knife will cease to fail." Common sense, along with that all knives may rust. But something every KZbin knife channel should say at some point, and some non-comedy channels should start every video with. Trying to make this a promotion comment with some meaning and not total nonsense because I can't afford to Patreon let alone a Vakra. When I used to buy Benchmade knives (I have 7) I learned that it was essential to put blue loctite on the pivot screw. I don’t know if they still have the problem in current production knives, but about a decade ago every one of those 7 knives pivot screws loosened and/or fell out. I hope they corrected that problem.

I ve been in the knife scene^^ since Im like 4 years old, been steeling my dads swiss army knife so often, eventually he bought me one^^ Since then I always tried to sharpen with like no money at all with rocks and ceramic cups and abrasive paste on cardboard, what im trying to say is that once you understand what you are doing, you can pretty much get any knife to mirror polish or some useable edge with household items. I carry a cold steel voyager since 6 years as edc, had a lot of other knives as well. cant stop buying new ones^^ btw excuse my shitty ass writing my german laptop hates english for some reason... Greetings from Bavaria love your humor keep up the good vids please!! Servus

I am not great at sharpening. I screwed up several knives free handing it, but the sharpmaker works well for me. I saw this guy sharpen stuff on a wet brick. I wish I had the patience for that.

I actually have a serious question for once... when you sharpen do you get to hair shaving sharp(not like just one or two hairs) or do you only go up to fine paper slicing sharp?

Somewhere in between... if if I get paper slicing in a few minutes or less, I go for something that can shave my arm. My Spydercos and even Ganzos do this the fastest and best.

I just remembered something an uncle told me. He was telling the story of how he broke the tip of one of his premium steel knives just popping a staple out of a stack of papers lol. Super high HRC is cool and all that but damn if a staple can take it out that easily what's the point. Also screw an expensive sharpener. I use a $6 diamond coated stone that starts at rough 750 grit but smooths out to perfection over time. I used to think sharpening was sort of a process only because I didn't realize I was oversharpening for a while. When an edge was too dull to cleanly slice regular paper I would give it 10 passes or so on each side til I realized to get any decent steel phone book paper push cutting sharp I just needed one pass maybe 2 on each side. Takes 5 seconds.

Yes sometimes it only takes a minute. It only took me two minutes to sharpen my s110v Para Military 2.

Most of your subscriber base consists of folding knife “collectors” that think that cutting a tomato is knife abuse, so they keep their custom flippers in a drawer somewhere, taking them out to fidget with them while watching videos. I’m just relieved that someone on KZbin is actually using their knives in their videos, unlike the generic knife reviewer that calls their folder a “hard-use” knife because they cut some cardboard with it. I don’t find your videos humorous, I find them educational.

15 thumbs down 👎 meant they cut their thumbs, whilst watching your video & still couldn't get their knives sharp enough. Blunt knives slip & cut fingers. ✌

I like the way you were flicking your knife in & out in front of the little pope figureen.👌 I also liked your combat marine stance in the mirror🔪you should make your own micro movie (5 or 20 mins max.) version of Deer Hunter. Sarcasm is far better than other egotistical You Tuber's I've quickly ended.

Hi. Haven’t batoned with my Sebenza yet. But my oldest son just heard Chris Reeve and $425, so I’m gonna probably be facing some questions.
