I watched three videos about winding a mantel clock, and yours is the best! You are the only one who explained what the three different holes are for and how often to wind it and cautioned about overwinding. Thank you.

Thank you. Terms such as "striking train" and "chiming train" are new to me, but their differences were not explained here.

The Chiming Train or Quarter Train is basically the piece that makes the clock chime or what is known as the Quarter Bells. The Striking Train moves the Hour rack and tells it what hour the clock says. In the Great Clock the Striking Train lifts the hammer on Big Ben as the rack moves so it strikes the correct hour.

I have a different mantle clock made by Seth Thomas but it has those same three winding points. Thank you for this video, it would have taken me a long time to figure out which did what. I plan to wind only the central time-keeping one and let the chime and strike springs run out. For some reason my "silent" mode doesn't silence the hourly strikes. It's an amazing machine... one winding lasts for more than a week.

I love that you referred to each part as a "Train" which is the proper English Term for each part that makes the clock function. Also the center one is Referred to as the "Going" Train which keeps the clock going, hence the name.

Came to KZbin to find how to fix my clock and so glad I found your video because I have this exact same one! Any idea on how to fix the chime that occurs at each hour? Mine is off and will chime incorrectly, for instance, 4 chimes at 10:00 instead of 10

You should be able to turn the hour hand to whatever hour it will strike. Just listen to how many chimes it makes, then turn the hour hand to whatever number it chimed.

Thank you. I have been trying to find out what spring powers the chimes and strikes. I was looking at having tbe strike only. Given there only one mode silent or not, I .now understand why. Importantly I now know the strikes and chimes are inseperable. So its quiet or all the sounds! Very useful. Subscribed. Thanks.

It's true that the chiming train needs to be wound and running on most clocks in order for the strike to run. The chime train triggers the strike train to start running at the top of the hour once the chiming is complete. If you move the hands around, perhaps backward the chimes and the strike can get out of sync and most all clocks have a chime correction as part of the chiming mechanism to bring everything back into sync. Another thing to consider with some models of mechanical clocks is that the springs won't be 'boxed'.. In other words the strike spring can simply unwind unfettered by a spring housing in the clock. With those clocks it's possible that the strike spring will unwind expanding and running into the clock train stopping the clock. This often happens when someone decides they want the clock to run, but they don't want to listen to the strike so they stop winding the strike spring. If the clock doesn't have some means of turning off the striking, it may be best to loosen the sound rod mounting and move the sound rod out of the way so the hammer cannot strike it. Don't do anything to the mechanism to stop the strike unless you know what you're doing. You could damage the clock.

@mccommas2

oh oh Mr. Kotter! I know the answer to that -- perhaps. The example in the video does not have it, but mine does and perhaps yours does as well. Is there a wind up hole near the 12? The guy who sold me a key to my new clock (it was missing) told me I could buy a special key for that to fix your exact problem. I did not buy it yet, but I guess the idea is you turn it one way to speed it up and the other way to slow it down. If your clock does not have such a hole at the 12, well then, nevermind. :)

I have a Elgin Bracket Clock 350-060 2 Jewel and I can't figure out for the life of me how to open the back of it. There's a square cut wood panel that opens up but when I turned the brass knob it unscrewed. I thought the knob was to unlock this piece of wood so I could lift it off. Can you tell me how to open the back of this bracket clock? Much appreciated.

My Seth Thomas (circa 1940) winds counter-clockwise. All three holes do. My partner complains and complains about the noise my clock makes so today I wanted to just have it tell time even though I love hearing the chimes. What is the distiction between the holes on the three and nine from each other? I don't understand. The one at 6 is the time so I wound (past tense of wind?) that and will let the other two wind down so he will be stop complaining. What if I wind one and not the other? What will NOT happen?

Some clocks have a silence option. I have two mantle clocks. One has a silent switch on the front (like in video). The other has a stop lever in the back of the clock, when raised keeps the chimes from striking. Unfortunately I don’t know what it does if you do not wind the other two holes.
@fredflintstone8048
@fredflintstone8048 8 ай бұрын
I have a 1940 Seth Thomas mantle clock and next to the 5 on the dial there's a place to insert the small end of the key (#0 size key) )to turn the chimes on and off. Insert the key and carefully rotate counter clockwise about 80 degrees to turn off the chimes. Turn clockwise to re-enable the chime. On some models there's a lever inside on the back of the movement that will lift the hammers so they cannot strike the rods. Another possibility would be to let the chiming train run down and stop winding the mainspring. That would be the winding post on the right side. Since the chime train triggers the strike train neither will run. Just wind the center spring for clock operation. I've heard some people caution not to do this but having knowledge of the ST124 movement in these clocks I can say it's perfectly safe mechanically to not wind either the chime or the strike train and only the time train. The star wheel on the center wheel will continue to lift the chime lifting lever every 15 minutes, but that won't harm anything. The chime train simply won't respond once it winds down. The chimes and the strikes will get out of sync, but the mechanism in the clock that corrects this will engage to fix it within an hour or two once the chime train is wound.

Oh, and different clocks take different size keys...just knowing what company made the clock will say what size you need to order.
@fredflintstone8048
@fredflintstone8048 8 ай бұрын
There are more than a dozen different key sizes possible. Some clocks use a double ended key. The Seth Thomas using a ST124 movement uses a double ended key with a size #0 on one end, and a #3 on the other. The #3 is for winding the clock and the #0 is for adjusting the regulation of the clock (speed) through a hole near the 12 on the dial, and some models the same small key size is for turning the chimes on and off through a hole near the number 5 on the dial. Get the right size key.. If you feel slop, play in a key you're trying to use on the winding post the key is the wrong size and you may damage the shaft and or the key. If uncertain take the clock to a repair shop in your area and they can help you get the size you need. If you have a good measuring caliper where the tips can reach into the hole you can measure between the flat surfaces on the shaft and look up the size you need on-line. It's a numeric sized based on a metric measurement (millimeters / fraction of a millimeter). If you're bringing a clock back to life you might want to have it serviced before trying to use it. Clocks need to be cleaned and lubricated every so many years. If the clock is very old and was run too long without proper servicing there's a good chance that it will need to have bushings installed. If it needs bushings there's a good change you won't be able to get it to run properly, consistently because the pinions will shift in their holes and cause binding.

How can you fix it if you over wound the clock?
@ericklundin5431
@ericklundin5431 10 ай бұрын
There is no such thing as an overwound clock. That is a myth. If it is wound tight and not running, it means it is dirty or a pivot hole is out of round or damaged teeth on a wheel. It needs to taken to a shop to be serviced because something is binding.
@fredflintstone8048
@fredflintstone8048 8 ай бұрын
If a person keeps wrenching on the key once the clock is fully wound there is a chance that they'll damage either the winding arbor, or the hole in the mainspring where the arbor catches or where the spring attaches to the barrel. Just stop winding when you feel it getting tight and the clicks stop or a little before then. As the other commenter stated there's no such thing as over winding the clock. Fully wound is when the spring exerts the most force on the gear train. If the clock won't run, or won't chime or strike, you have other problems and need to have it looked at.
