Having those beautiful wooden floors cover with carpet feels criminal. I'm from Edinburgh and we have lovely old wooden floors in a lot of the buildings and 1/2 of them don't look as lovely as that. But that's just my view, and it's great to see that they are still protecting them with the carpet. Hello for Edinburgh!
@myopinion694204 жыл бұрын
The last place we lived in was done almost exactly opposite to this place for some reason. Bedrooms where timber and hallway/lounge was carpet. seemed very backwards. Did not like the timber floor in the bedrooms. We are not fortunate enough to have exposed timber floor quality timber in our new house. we will be keeping carpet in the bedrooms but are looking at a good quality vinyl plank for lounge/kitchen/bathroom/hall/dining as its water proof and not quite as hard/cold as a timber floor. Never been a fan of 'floating' flooring, it always looks good when its put in, but never seems to last that long, I guess its just never installed correctly and to top it off, there is not much material to sand back and re-finish.
@andrewcarr24314 жыл бұрын
as a Brit expat now in Canada I agree. Some wonderful workmanship in older homes that if can be restored adds a lot of character to a home. And if the new or current owner ever gets tired you can cover them up in a weekend.
@andrewcarr24314 жыл бұрын
@@myopinion69420 vinyl plank is also a "Floating floor" albeit a more modern and tight fitting one. The Public works guys I know use it a lot in their social housing refits. Easy to maintain and clean by the tenants.
@myopinion694204 жыл бұрын
@Andrew Carr the ones I'm talking about get glued down kind of like carpet tiles. not the ones that are 'clip lock' style. but yes, it is technically 'floating' as it is glued to a backing that is generally nailed to the floor. One of the reasons we are going that route is we have kids and flooring is something I never really want to have to worry about, if you get the right vinyl, it can be very hard wearing. If I wen't any type of polished floor boards I would be constantly paranoid about scratches.

Mate of mine bought an old place earlier this year. He asked me if he should cover the old timber floor in laminate. I told him it looked to be 60-something year old Kauri Pine and some people pay big money to have that put in! It is a lovely floor, no big gaps, solid as the day it was built, probably better than most new floors. He did a DIY job to sand and re-finish it with a couple of mates. Finish is a bit uneven, but pretty darned good for a DIY job. I told him how much we paid to put solid spotted gum floors into the upstairs of my family's home.

Pro tip- when using 'builder board' for a demo phase, tape all edges and overlaps. If they aren't taped you will get tiny bits of stuff under there and you won't know it's there till you take it off and the floor is scratched up.. Also saving a piece of carpet as a floor mat for the entry is good, esp in the winter as moisture kills that stuff! Most of us probably know this stuff but it's def worth thinking about..
@sterlinghearth36514 жыл бұрын
Glad to see this comment. I was coming to write the same. Tape all the outer edges with blue or green masking tape. And the joints of the paper are best taped with something like RamBoard tape. It’s like a super duty paper packing tape that works the best for the joints. That white masking will peel up after some traffic and dust (or it does for me.)
@andrewcarr24314 жыл бұрын
in North America it is called "RAM Board" and is the same stuff. Pretty good product i've found and use it alot. Ditto with the floors, found some lovely ones over the years during reno's. Some are coming back in fashion for easy maintenance or being replaced by vinyl plank flooring which adds some cushion features. Nice touch with the site/plans table. And another tip i've learned is to build some temporary shelving to throw all your gear and materials on if it is a long job. We are a property investment guys so after the inital demo we take a (bed) room and use it as our tool garage/workshop, etc.

Hey Scott, with the zip walls I usually only put 1 zipper on and if you can get the foam rails they seal to ceiling and floors a lot better! Also watch that carpet protection film!!! It likely says in the tds that it should only be left down for 30days, from experience it’s best to change it every 30days otherwise when you pull it up at the end of the job the carpet will be extremely sticky from the adhesive sticking to it.

A couple of questions regarding your portable workbench, I’m thinking of making one so I’m always excited to see it pop up in videos, it seems it be getting a lot of use, are you still using the ‘prototype’ using the cheap plywood you made in ep 202? If so how is it holding up considering you made it out of 12 mm plywood? Is there any need to go to a thicker plywood or would that just make it heavy and not as useful?

Most times on your videos it's raining. Does the sun ever shine? Here in the South of the US, it's HOT sticky, sweaty, stinky 95- 100+ deg. With people staying home because of the Covid-19 thing going on, we can't work inside, just outside jobs where allowed. We've been very careful and picky about what jobs we take on. People are willing to wait. I enjoy all your videos.

Actually Auckland- where he is- has been having a drought so bad the dams that store the city water are very low. But yes I have noticed he always seems to be filming in the rain. With no community transmission, at present, in New Zealand work continues as it did before Covid- inside and outside in fact renovations seem to have picked up since we got out of lockdown. Many speculate that all that time in lockdown meant people had time to consider renovations and as long as they still have an income started. All the cases we have are 23 people in the isolation/quarantine facilities. Fingers crossed it stays that way.
