If you purchase a tree you might want to plant it in a pot so that you can bring it into a place where it will not freeze because you know Texas can get really cold 🥶 summers are great but those winters will kill your trees 🌲 so if you are willing to put some work in to keep your trees safe then I say go for it, now lychees trees are expensive, or try getting on Facebook or KZbin and ask if someone can give you seeds or a seedlings 🌱 and the cost might be little or just shipping

The air prune pots work well so you should be okay. Be careful they dry out fast. Usually the pots have a wide diagonal or other mesh like pattern I guess multiple holes all around the drum would be okay but not certain it would be as good as the actual air prune pots.

@Pepesplants4 жыл бұрын
If your tree was grown from seed you may wait ten or more years to see if you will get fruit. This is why lychee and most fruit trees are grafted or air layered. These trees produce fast and are of a known quality with very desirable traits. Lychee trees are best pruned after harvest and the goal is to keep them at about 8-10 feet tall. Cool temperatures and other environmental factors, along with cultivation techniques are key to productivity.

They require cool periods to trigger flowering. That means approximately 100-200 hours of chilling below 68 degrees F mean daily temperature in the winter to set fruit. You also need to go easy on nitrogen fertilizer, provide full sun and understand the growth of leaves and be careful to not prune a few months prior to flowering period.

Thanks for the helpful video. I live in Okinawa with climate much like Florida. Would it be inadvisable to trim my 4' bushy tree now (February) if I'm hoping for fruit this year. There's been a lot of new growth in the past year. Also, the leaf tips, sometimes up to 20-25% of the leaf have dried up and turned brown. Perhaps due to our annual typhoons or lack of water? Should these leaves be removed or trimmed just leaving the healthy parts?
@Pepesplants4 жыл бұрын
Here in Florida we will prune a lychee after harvest around July. We pretty much then leave irt alone to flush out with new growth and then back and forth from flushes to dormancy. When cool weather around 60 degrees F or cooler stimulates the tree to flush and set fruit again in Summer. So pruning is best after the annula harvest. Hope that helps.

Leaf tips are often the result of synthetic fertilizer so use organic only if possibe and during warm weather not in the winter. They also need lots of water and sun. Well drained soi. In winter ease up on the water.

Most lychee trees are propagated by air layering. That method makes a clone of the tree from a branch of various lengths. Grafting is also used but less commonly. Both methods produce mature trees of fruiting age. A seedling can eventually mature into a tree that may produce fruit. The time to fruit can be very lengthy. It could be ten or more years of waiting and then discover an amazing new variety or end up a waste of time. Growing a seedling for fruit is like rolling the dice and waiting for the prize. Seedlings are grown so that they could be grafted on to them. It is more practical to propagate lychee trees from air layers for this reason. Hope that explains it a bit better. You can watch my air layering videos here on my channel. I have a few of them.

What are signs that a longon tree is going to flowers
@Pepesplants8 ай бұрын
Longans bloom in South Florida from February or March through early May, and fruit harvest season is from the middle of July to early September, peaking in August. Hope that helps.

Have you had fruit on those trees yet..?

Yes, some are flowering and fruiting faster than others. Usually within a year or less.

What kind of fertilizer do you put on Lychee tree???
@Pepesplants4 жыл бұрын
The rule of thumb for fast growth is "once a month" applications of a balanced fertilizer during spring and summer. Avoid synthetic fertilizer. Use an organic fertilizer combination like a 10-10-10 or similar balanced combination. You can usually find a close match by mixing other NPK ratios. amzn.to/2XhWWUv amzn.to/3k9KJe6

You titled it as prun and dwarf container longan tree. However, you're pruning it to be grown as a big tree when it's transplant to ground. Its very misleading.
@Pepesplants5 жыл бұрын
By pruning this way on a regular basis the lychee tree will be maintained quite small. (Dwarf). Sorry for any confusion. No intent here to mislead anyone.

Hi Pepe, may I ask what state and zone you are in? I just recently bought a sweetheart lychee early Sept 2018. She is doing okay, but am not sure how to care for her this upcoming winter. I am in Southern Ca, zone 10. Thank you
@Pepesplants6 жыл бұрын
Zone 10b. Here in Florida we are going into the cooler drier season. This is a time of rest for the lychee trees. They will benefit from some cool weather. Cooler weather stimulates flowering later in the summer. Don't prune the trees in the fall and winter. Prune your lychee tree every year in the summer right after you harvest the fruit. They benefit from lots of organic mulch and compost. Avoid synthetic fertilizer, provide young trees with wind protection and keep the soil moist. Full sun too. This is what I do in Florida. Should be similar in your area of the country. All the best and thanks for visiting. :-)

Thank you so much for replying. I found your website and will be reading up on other trees as well. I mulched my sweetheart with dried sugarcane leaves and fruit peels. Since it likes cool weather, I assume I should not put her in the green house. Thank you again.

DON'T LIKE IT: CAN'T HAVE MUCH FRUIT, IF DONE THAT WAY;
@Pepesplants5 жыл бұрын
This is simply a way to train young trees, keep them small and healthy. I will cover more details in a future video.

I think you pruned too much at a time.

OK! We all have opinions. The tree is growing great and also nice and compact. :-)

You should watch the video of the trees when I planted them. You will see some pretty nice healthy trees because of that pruning. :-)
