Thank you. I air-layered my Lychee tree and I potted the new growth. It’s doing well so far so based on your video, I’ll be sure to prune it as it gets bigger. My tree in the ground is about 7’ tall and it has lots of flowers-it’s a Kaimana lychee tree here in Hawaii.👍

If you purchase a tree you might want to plant it in a pot so that you can bring it into a place where it will not freeze because you know Texas can get really cold 🥶 summers are great but those winters will kill your trees 🌲 so if you are willing to put some work in to keep your trees safe then I say go for it, now lychees trees are expensive, or try getting on Facebook or KZbin and ask if someone can give you seeds or a seedlings 🌱 and the cost might be little or just shipping

Just remember to not prune until after harvest if your tree is of bearing age. Best practice in Florida is to prune mid July. Hope that helps.

I have a Lychee tree that grew from a Lychee seed. The tree is about half a meter tall. How do I propagate the branches on the Lychee tree?
@Pepesplants
@Pepesplants 3 ай бұрын
I would not propagate a seedling tree because the wait for it to grow and fruit will be a long one. Propagate a tree that is healthy and already producing good quality fruit. Here is how: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKrRfKRuhdN1qqcsi=RdYGX__IcawrgXSj

@Pepesplants

The air prune pots work well so you should be okay. Be careful they dry out fast. Usually the pots have a wide diagonal or other mesh like pattern I guess multiple holes all around the drum would be okay but not certain it would be as good as the actual air prune pots.

@Pepesplants
@Pepesplants 4 жыл бұрын
If your tree was grown from seed you may wait ten or more years to see if you will get fruit. This is why lychee and most fruit trees are grafted or air layered. These trees produce fast and are of a known quality with very desirable traits. Lychee trees are best pruned after harvest and the goal is to keep them at about 8-10 feet tall. Cool temperatures and other environmental factors, along with cultivation techniques are key to productivity.

They require cool periods to trigger flowering. That means approximately 100-200 hours of chilling below 68 degrees F mean daily temperature in the winter to set fruit. You also need to go easy on nitrogen fertilizer, provide full sun and understand the growth of leaves and be careful to not prune a few months prior to flowering period.

That depends. Air layers and grafted trees produce right away in season. Seedlings can take from three to seven or more years. Sugar apple is pruned in the spring. Same principles apply. Pruning to an open vase shape and keep the canopy open, so that light can penetrate and help achieve fruit distribution throughout the canopy. Prune so that none of the branches can touch the ground.

Thanks for the helpful video. I live in Okinawa with climate much like Florida. Would it be inadvisable to trim my 4' bushy tree now (February) if I'm hoping for fruit this year. There's been a lot of new growth in the past year. Also, the leaf tips, sometimes up to 20-25% of the leaf have dried up and turned brown. Perhaps due to our annual typhoons or lack of water? Should these leaves be removed or trimmed just leaving the healthy parts?
@Pepesplants
@Pepesplants 4 жыл бұрын
Here in Florida we will prune a lychee after harvest around July. We pretty much then leave irt alone to flush out with new growth and then back and forth from flushes to dormancy. When cool weather around 60 degrees F or cooler stimulates the tree to flush and set fruit again in Summer. So pruning is best after the annula harvest. Hope that helps.
@Pepesplants
@Pepesplants 4 жыл бұрын
Leaf tips are often the result of synthetic fertilizer so use organic only if possibe and during warm weather not in the winter. They also need lots of water and sun. Well drained soi. In winter ease up on the water.

The longan is less fussy climate-wise than the lychee. Even so, young trees should be protected from cold and hot, dry winds. Hardened-off mature trees can withstand temperatures as low as 22 deg F for short periods of time.

I'm currently trying to plant my own trees via seeds. I successfully germinated 5 seeds out of 14 seeds planted. 3 of them have been moved to larger pots, but as of now they are indoors to protect them for Arizona heat. However, I have a problem.... my trees are about at about 4 months old (counting from when i first planted them in a seed starter tray to when they germinated ) at this point , about a 1ft tall with a thin green trunk/stalk, but I seem to see signs of wilting on my 3 potted trees. @@marceloferreira3424 That could be the case but rare for nurseries to grow them or offer seedlings. Most nurseries would sell an air layered or grafted tree for that reason. No one wants to wait 10-15 years to see if the fruit is good.

Hi Pete. I have 15 fully grown lychee trees that I’m going to air-layer using your method. Plan is to establish a high density lychee orchid (about 600 trees over an acre) with drip irrigation, keeping the height short (6-7 feet). Would it work? Can’t find much literature on the subject. Your guidance would be great. Thanks

Seeds are not recommended. They take possibly 8-12 years. Grafted or air layered trees after one season if enough chill hours 45 Degrees F. That being said, the care, watering, sunlight, pruning etc will have to be done correctly.

Hello Pepe. My lychee tree produces a lot of flowers and turn to fruits that fail to develop to maturity. They just fall off from the tree. The tips of the leaves turn brown. I watered the tree more and it produced more leaves this August but the other leaves still turn brown at their tips. The tree was planted to the ground 5 years ago and was never pruned. 3 years ago the young tree produced 3 red tree-ripened fruits and were so sweet. After that year, once the fruits are 2 mm in size, they fall off. Do you have some advice? By the way, this and last year's weather were okay for my fruiting trees in Los Angeles. Thank you. I harvested a lot of fruits from my mandarin, atemoya, cherimoya, orange, calamansi, pomelo and fig trees. My lychee tree is the only one with a problem. .

@@Pepesplants Sorry I didn't know Pepe. I wasn't aware that there's different varieties of lychees until I saw and instructional video recently. My dad bought the lychee tree for me from an Asian owned/operated orchard. The young tree had a ripening fruit and it was like a novelty. I only know canned lychees in syrup whick i bought don't not oftenly because I also like other fruits.

@@addisondelrosario2043 Lychees require very specific environmental conditions. Each variety is different in bearing consistently. Sweetheart, Maritius and Brewster are easier to vrow and get consistent yields. Emperor is a variety with large fruit but is ver inconsistent in fruiting. Will do a more detailed video in the future. Thanks for your comments and visit to my channel.

@@PepesplantsHello again Pepe. I attempted air layering in 5 branches of my tree for the first time. Flowers blossomed from the rest of the branches mid April. I fertilized the tree with KPhos and little Mg SO4 before hand. I adjusted the amount of water I was putting into it and it seemed that the browning of the leaf tip has been prevented in the unaffected leaves. Seeing your video again was a refresher. 😊

Hi, you mention that you always keep the biggest branch when trimming the outer branches, is there ever a case where you'd trim the larger because it's extending out too far? (sorry I'm new to this)

Also, how often you air layer that lower branch? Can it be done multiple times if it has time to recover?
@Pepesplants

You can cut any branch you wish. Thin or thick. You would air layer a branch once. Create a new tree and years later you can airlayer the branches on that tree. It all grows back. Hope this answers your question. Thanks for visiting.

I have heard that lychee will not produce fruit if they are not grafted. I guess that must not be true. Thank you
@Pepesplants
@Pepesplants 2 жыл бұрын
Most lychee trees are propagated by air layering. That method makes a clone of the tree from a branch of various lengths. Grafting is also used but less commonly. Both methods produce mature trees of fruiting age. A seedling can eventually mature into a tree that may produce fruit. The time to fruit can be very lengthy. It could be ten or more years of waiting and then discover an amazing new variety or end up a waste of time. Growing a seedling for fruit is like rolling the dice and waiting for the prize. Seedlings are grown so that they could be grafted on to them. It is more practical to propagate lychee trees from air layers for this reason. Hope that explains it a bit better. You can watch my air layering videos here on my channel. I have a few of them.

What kind of fertilizer do you put on Lychee tree???
@Pepesplants
@Pepesplants 4 жыл бұрын
The rule of thumb for fast growth is "once a month" applications of a balanced fertilizer during spring and summer. Avoid synthetic fertilizer. Use an organic fertilizer combination like a 10-10-10 or similar balanced combination. You can usually find a close match by mixing other NPK ratios. amzn.to/2XhWWUv amzn.to/3k9KJe6

Hi Pepe, may I ask what state and zone you are in? I just recently bought a sweetheart lychee early Sept 2018. She is doing okay, but am not sure how to care for her this upcoming winter. I am in Southern Ca, zone 10. Thank you
@Pepesplants
@Pepesplants 6 жыл бұрын
Zone 10b. Here in Florida we are going into the cooler drier season. This is a time of rest for the lychee trees. They will benefit from some cool weather. Cooler weather stimulates flowering later in the summer. Don't prune the trees in the fall and winter. Prune your lychee tree every year in the summer right after you harvest the fruit. They benefit from lots of organic mulch and compost. Avoid synthetic fertilizer, provide young trees with wind protection and keep the soil moist. Full sun too. This is what I do in Florida. Should be similar in your area of the country. All the best and thanks for visiting. :-)

Thank you so much for replying. I found your website and will be reading up on other trees as well. I mulched my sweetheart with dried sugarcane leaves and fruit peels. Since it likes cool weather, I assume I should not put her in the green house. Thank you again.
