Maybe here's a little help for you. I grow thorny Boysenberry. First you can't let every new cane grow. I run two wires one low one high. Alternating wires each year. I send three canes left and three right each year. Attaching the canes to the wire with tomato clips. Easy to maintain. Hope that helps you.

Thank you! My thornless gave thorns first year and I didn’t know what to do with them. Good bye root stock! I love boysenberries and highly recommend for a sweet mild tart berry that even kids enjoy! One plant took over one of our 2x6 garden bed and produced 30lbs of fruit!

Hello, thanks for your video. I live in San Diego so your newsletter and videos are helpful. I would suggest that it would be extremely helpful to have the filming of the video include some close ups of what you are doing. It is hard to tell what you are doing at a distance. Thank you so much.

Subscribing so I can come back to this video. March 2023 we got a plant from Knott's during their Boysenberry Festival. We got our first tiny batch of berries in the late spring. Living in Southern California and being a new gardener, I need all the local info I can get.

Sam the man and Randi… hola you two 👋 So happy to see a video from you on here 😆 I don’t grow boysenberries or any berries for that matter but I definitely watched and enjoyed the video… good work on it for sure 👍 I was half expecting/hoping you would sneak a hello in there directly to the camera Randi, especially when you went in too consult 🙃😆😂 Hope you both (and Sam) have been well 🙏 I’ve been quiet on IG and in my garden as well but I’m still growing a thing or two and I’ll be on IG soon enough bugging all my favorite friends and you two are definitely on that list 😆

Hi Rod! Was just thinking about you as we head into pepper starting season soon! Glad to hear you're growing a thing or two. It's been pretty slow in the garden here due to rain, so it was nice to get out and get some pruning done. Talk soon!

@@FreckledCalifornian Yes, this rainy season has given us more rain than usual out here as well and I really didn’t mind slowing all the way down for it 🙏 Oh, and I meant to say hi to Pete as well but typed Sam 😅 Be well friends 👋

Do you take to tip off the new canes to encourage side growth? How long do you leave the new growth that you've wrapped back onto the trellis?
@FreckledCalifornian
@FreckledCalifornian 4 ай бұрын
I know some gardeners like to tip canes to encourage laterals, but I typically just keep the cane to the size my trellis/support can handle....so I guess if it's longer than that I'd trim it. So, I think I prune more for size, but side growth does happen naturally. Hope that makes sense.

Such a helpful video! Our vines never die out in Southern CA so the other videos don't apply as well. I kept pausing the video to go out and clip the next step to get it right.

Does the plant spread too much? Like raspberrys? Im scared of planting directly on ground
@FreckledCalifornian
@FreckledCalifornian 6 ай бұрын
hi! Yes, it does grow and spread very similar to raspberries and blackberries. Depending on what you prefer, I grow blackberries in a large container. You could try that.

Nice video. Do you know which variety of thornless you’re growing? Looking to order a few but not sure which variety to pick. San Diego zone 10a, thanks.

Hi! Thanks for watching. We bought ours from Cal Poly Pomono Nursery. The tag just said "thornless boysenberry" but if you Google "cal poly pomona Dave Wilson thornless boysenberry" you'll find the exact details. Hope that helps!

What's the difference between boysenberry and black berry taste?
@FreckledCalifornian
@FreckledCalifornian Жыл бұрын
In my experience, they taste like a mix of blackberry and raspberry. There's more of a tartness like a raspberry but it's sweeter and more jammy.
