I have a port wine magnolia that I have been lovingly growing in a pot for the last 5 years. I would like to prune it as it is getting a bit gangly, but I'm nervous to do so as it's so slow growing. Should I give it a hard prune or just the tips? Thanks for your advice.

Was hoping to learn about how to select branches for pruning, where to make cuts, when, etc but really no useful info is presented here.

I am sorry you feel this way about this video. With evergreens, as mentioned in the video, it is really about pruning to the desired shaped and size - specifically where to make cuts is less important. Please remember that this is very different with other types of magnolias.

Right tree, wrong spot!

Can’t disagree with you - they were planted by the previous owner of our property and have to be pruned way too often!

I'm not an expert and I can't speak english so I don't understand, why has you do that massive cuts? I think that cuts can produe a lo of wood nd the cuts will never be resane but I don't know how magnolia resane his cuts so I can be wrong.

Thank you for your question ...... the main reason I did these cuts was because the plants were growing over an area that needed to be clear. But as you can see from the following video; the plants really do grow back quickly and can be pruned in order to manage their size.
