I love it that you mentioned Fibonacci. I was not aware of that relationship in tomato plants. You can see the same spiral in nature in the same proportions in these examples; look at a pine cone from the narrow tip, sunflowers, photo of a hurricane, water flowing down the drain in a sink, a nautilus sea shell, and many more!

this is single handedly the most comprehensive video I've been able to find covering indeterminate tomato care. maybe it just makes sense to the way my mind works, but it did just that. . .made sense. I wish there were more KZbinrs out there making gardening videos like this with content for beginners that need more detailed information than the average beginner. This video is WONDERFUL. Of all such videos on tomato pruning I've seen this is BY FAR THE BEST. Total clarity on how the plant grows. I can now look at my tomato plants, look along the main leader saying, "sunleaf, sunleaf, fruit cluster" and so on. I love that I now know that fruit clusters only grow on a leader! Stumbled on your site by accident. Really learned a lot. Your visuals for identifying and pruning tomatoes were super helpful. I knew about planting tomatoes deeper in the soil but not the cucumbers. I also like the idea of planting herbs and onions in between since you prune lower leaves off thus giving them more room to grow up . I especially like how you pointed outthe differences between the look of the leaves and where they were found on the plant. I'll made sure to subscribe to your site as I REALLY need help identifying plants. When he was alive my husband NEVER let me into the garden until the seedlings were at least 6 inches tall and he had removed all the weeds. I tended to keep the weeds and pull the seedlings much to his dismay.

He’s so much for this lesson was growing tomato plants. For the last couple years and a friend kept try to explain I needed to cut back the tomato plant to get bigger fruits! I couldn’t figure out what he was saying because he wasn’t too clear with his broken Russian/English.Each year he was saying I should be getting bigger tomatoes if I cut them back that Inhad too much going on in the pot. I've 'buried' my tomato seedlings for the first time this year and it's worked better than I expected! I put them into a hole taller than the seedling and kept piling the dirt in as they grew taller. I didn't take off any of the leaves before doing it and even though I planted during a nearly 40c heatwave only one out of 30 odd plants died, I think it let the plants reabsorb the moisture and energy. Thanks for pointing out the suckers so well, I have heard they can be struck for another plant but I've never tried it.

As I recall, my Grandmother would pull off suckers and stick them in the ground to start more plants. I don't remember if she put them between the original plants or on a separate row. They would root and grow to fruit, though obviously behind the growth curve of the original plants.

@@Brenda0312F congratulations! It's a fun hobby for sure. I just discovered this channel this evening, but this guy seems pretty legit. Another one i like is "MIgardener." Tips from me - don't overwater. The general rule seems to be approx 1 inch per week. Also don't let your garden go to hell either - if you let the weeds get ahead of you, you won't be motivated to get out there and tend to them. Do you have chickens? Now might be the time. Chickens and gardening go hand in hand. They're crazy easy to tend to and give you eggs and fertilizer. Live in town? Most places, even the peoples republic of Los Angeles will allow hens.

My mom used to have the biggest and most productive tomatoes around. When asked she would smile and say she spanked them, lol. It's true, she would take a stick and beat the plants and break a few branches and they went nuts. In weeks we had new growth and lots of blooms and tomatos. It's because they think they are gonna die and go into overdrive. Try it, it works for me too. Peace

I just never prune above the top flower cluster. much easier to just wait and see what looks best to keep as the leader and what to sucker. Sometimes the sucker is better to keep as the plant grows.

So needed this. Trying out single stemming this year and have topped off a few precious tomato plants. Sigh. Identifying the leader has been more difficult than I anticipated. The fail safe of fruiting cluster above off the main stem was what I needed.
