Today I am pruning my lavender hedge. This is Lavender Hidcote. In this video I will show you how to prune your lavender to avoid leggy and woody plants so that they look their best and produce masses of fragrant blooms for you.
I hope this has been useful and interesting but do let me know if you have any questions.
It’s difficult to know how to express myself on social media when there is so much sorrow and devastation in the world we live in, particularly in Ukraine. My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Ukraine.

Hi Netty, There's nothing better than beautifully kept lavender! Also, so glad you chose to go with the eucalyptus. With all the lavender too, you will have a wonderfully scented garden! 💚

it's late March in Southern California and I still have flowers on my lavender (gross I think). Should I still cut it back/prune this year???

Hi Larry, It's best to give your lavender an annual prune even if they still have last years flowers because that will avoid your plants becoming woody. The plants will soon start shooting up new growth and if you prune them now, as I do, then you will have flowers a little later in the season, but I think that's fine! 👍🏼😁 It works for me 😁

So what did you do with the leggy one you showed at the beginning? Is there a way of refreshing ovrgrown ones?

Hi Clare, Unfortunately, the plant cannot produce new growth from the woody parts. This particular plant was very kindly given to me but it was already like this (very woody). I've checked carefully and I can't see any new growth on the woody stems so the best thing to do in this instance is to take cuttings. Lavender can be grown very easily from cuttings and it grows quickly too, so I will have a lovely new plant in no time 😃👍🏼

I bought some very small and young Heathcote lavender 2 years ago. There was no flowers when I bought them. I didnt prune them the first year as so small. Last year lots of green growth but no flowers. Now growing well with lots of green growth. Should I prune it now as its about 9 inches tall growing in a pot

Hi there April. I'm not sure where you live but if your seasons are similar to mine here in UK, then I wouldn't prune it this year until it has flowered, otherwise you run the risk of losing the flowers this year. Also, ensure that they lavender is planted in well draining soil, with added grit or something and also has LOADS of sunshine, because that is what it needs to be healthy and flower well.

I accidentally cut some of the wood stalks when I pruned a lavender plant for the first time. Will this kill the lavender?

Also - when should I prune the lavender? I inherited the plant when I moved in to my house and this is all new to me! It seems to have old flowers from last year. Should I wait until end of summer to prune these? Thank you!!

Hi there, please don't worry too much about the pruning. If you've left any green leaves on the plant then it should recover. It's best to prune the lavender once it has finished flowering for the year - or when you're fed up with all the mess from the dropped seed 🤣. Good luck!
