This week I am pruning both old established shrub roses and also getting bare root roses planted last Fall ready for their first growing season.
A lot of people get put off by rose maintenance and it is true that to keep a rose healthy and those blooms looking their best, roses need to be pruned every year. But pruning isn't really a big deal. Shrub/bush roses need to have a vessel shape with room in the middle for air to circulate. Once you have removed your DDDs and crossing branches all you are looking for is a nice and healthy shape. How many canes - that is not important - it can be 3, 5, 8, as long as each cane improves the overall shape and has room to grow and flower you have done your job. The old roses in this border are 20+ years old and are Hybrid Tea roses and like everything in this garden require a helping hand to get back to normal. I wouldn't prune this heavily every year, but I need to breath some life back into these ladies. On the other scale of things I have bare root roses planted last Fall and they are going into their first growing season. I want to get off to a good start with these creating a good framework from day 1. I pruned back to 6 inches and look forward to seeing them perform this year. I am not expecting a great flower display this year just a taste of things to come. next year I can be much more gentle with them as the stems will have thickened up and new ones added. Roses give so much joy so never be put off by pruning.
