This video just popped in my feed today and I know you posted it 11 months ago, but still, your content is so calmly soothing and factually correct. I am binge-watching it since I have discovered you and even though you live on the other side of Atlantic there is plenty that I am able to apply here, in my UK garden. On the other note this video has 11 months and it saddens me that the situation in UA is not getting better. My family is originally from the region of Lviv, but they have emigrated long time ago, but it still somehow feels very personal to me. Sending lots of warmth from here.

And, the way Poland showed itself in this time of horror is marvelous, taking and helping all the refugees from Ukraine! Thank you!

I am truly loving your videos, thank you for sharing your great knowledge that is helping me so much! I left a question or two about roses on another of your videos, and it’s great to find someone doing this, and about beloved David Austin roses!! You are not alone nor are all the Ukrainians and the people helping them as there are the many millions on the planet who are part of the world that absolutely does not tolerate breaking treaties and international laws against war crimes, post-WWII. Period. Putin will go to World Court or otherwise why does it exist? All of the members of the Allies, NATO, the UN, stand against this outrageous criminal level of destruction. Bless your heart, I cannot imagine how this affects you each day. It is very difficult to be witness to this level of complete destruction. There is evil walking the earth within the guise of a human being. Love and peace to you, keep doing this good work as it’s so well done. You are a natural!

Just leave your rose and wait for steady warm weather. And then you will be able to see what is dead and what can be saved. Each bud space can produce several shoots, so even if you have to rub off brown and damaged young leaves, canes can still perform well. I know, those pesky late frosts!

You are welcome, Christine. Dormant oil is good to fight all sorts of pests. It is applied in late winter. Hi Olga! Sorry for the bad news but I am happy to hear 😊 spring has arrived in your garden. I wanted to ask you about this shrub. I have 2 of these shrubs and they are about 6 months old since I planted them in the ground. They didn't come bare root. It came in the smaller pot, they looked like young plants. But I recently gave them a short hair cut because they grew big and very long. Long and skinny canes. And no buds, not one. I'm not sure if I was supposed to just let them be but I did cut them back. I got tired of seeing them looking like a crazy mess. I see lots of new shoots popping out now. How long before I can see any buds?? I live in Hawaii where it is warm and all my roses grow like crazy. I'm so excited to see a bud but no such luck yet..😓 Please don't tell me I have to wait a year.😩
@OlgaCarmody
@OlgaCarmody 2 жыл бұрын
Are you sure that the rose you have is not some sort of a climber? Unfortunately I don’t know your climate intimately well…If you have many shoots coming, that means they have to start blooming soon. I don’t think you need to wait another year. The nature of the rose is to produce blooms. Keep me posted. I am going to research your problem…
@Sunshine-tf4ul
@Sunshine-tf4ul 2 жыл бұрын
Olga, I went back to check my order history from David Austin to double check my order. I had ordered 2- 2quart Lady of shallot shrub roses. I needed to make sure it wasn't a climber😅. So I did go ahead and cut them back and now have a lot of new shoots emerging everywhere. I really hope this time it won't be just a bunch of long canes.😓 But, I hope you are feeling better, I know how frustrating it is when you plan to plant your roses and something comes up. But I have to lyk, I have a Desdemona as well, it came this past fall and I can't be more pleased. It keeps blooming non stop! and I currently have this long cane that shot up and I swear it has a whole cluster of buds on it! Her blooms are beautiful and fragrant. What an awesome plant!! You will love her..❤ Take care and get well soon!!

New to the wonderful world of David Austin roses. Watched your video and learned a lot. I am also praying for Ukraine. One thing I wasn't clear on....when we saying "outfacing bud" what were you referring to? Were you snipping above or below the outfacing buds? Were you leaving or removing outfacing buds? Thank you.
@OlgaCarmody
@OlgaCarmody 2 жыл бұрын
If you trim the stem, rose will use the closest bud from the top of the stem to continue growing. And the direction of the bud will determine the direction of stem developing from it. Since we want our rose bush to have nice shape and air circulation, we usually don't trim near inward facing bud, meaning the bud which is growing from the side of the interior of the bush. Hope it helps.

I know this is an old comment, but I’ve heard of this happening to certain roses that will revert back to a parent breed. One example is the New Dawn rose. It is typically a repeat bloomer, but you have to be careful while propagating it, because certain cuttings will revert back to its parent, Dr. W. Van Fleet, which is a once blooming rose. Hope this helps!
