My grandfather planted a wisteria in his garden in 1963. It yet lives and has become a large and heavy plant, too heavy for the structure it sits on. A couple years without maintenance after my grandparents passed have also made it complicated too prune, the tendrils have wrapped around eachother and become a nest of thick branches. But even then (and to this day) it does produces a glorious waterfall of blooms.

This is my first time having Wisteria. She's about 10-15 years old but I only moved in last year. I pruned her WAAAAY back, down to sticks in January 2021 and she did bloom a bit, but not a lot.... then she got really bushy and green (she's on an arbor trellis, lovely) but I didn't know to prune back in August or after the bloom until I watched your video! So her leaves all fell off in January and just now got around to pruning. But what I read last year was to cut waaaay back to the woody sticks... and I did that once again. There were pods or what looked like blooms but I cut all that back ... as I didn't prune in August. I will have to set up a reminder to prune back after blooming this year (hopefully, I didn't cut that short and won't have any blooms!- think maybe that happened last year - pruned to much in Winter ... and this year pruning on first day of Spring where there 'WERE' buds .... Ahhh ... well, live and learn. Thanks so much for your video, very helpful!! Will prune twice this upcoming year, and not back to the hard wood, lol!! :)

Hi, thank you for watching. I understand cuttings are difficult but you can try. You can also try collecting and planting seed pods although I believe it can be complex and take 15 years. Hi. Thanks for this. I think it depends on your objectives. It might be wise to sacrifice some blooming potential this year just to bring the thing back under control. I suspect even if you don't follow the prescribed routine it will still give you some blossom somewhere. What is the main thing you want to achieve? Mark

Only just planted my wisteria on the outside of my house on a wire trelis (Wisteria sinensis Caroline) so got a good few years before I see any blooms but can already see rapid growth. How do you feed your wisteria to keep it healthy?

I just did the winter pruning. This is the plants third seizoen. A lot of the side branches from the main horizontal stem are only about 10 cm long. Do i have to prune those as well to promote flowering? Or leave them for now? Greetings from the Netherlands.

The advice in your video is really clear and very informative. However, you don’t make any mention of the bean like pods that develop each year on my plant. Can you advise how I should deal with these or is it the case that if I summer prune early enough they won’t develop ?
@MarksHouseandGardenUK2 жыл бұрын
Hi thanks fpr this. The bean like pods are indeed seed pods. And in fact can be germinated and grown on. But it can take 15 years to produce a plant (layering/pinning a vine into soil is suggested as the best way to propagate). Regarding the pods, i just leave them on, they don't seem to have a detrimental effect on blossom. And my hope is that will provide food for an animal at some point. Thanks for your comment and watching. Are you UK based?

@@MarksHouseandGardenUK Thank you for your prompt response which is much appreciated and very helpful. I am in North East Derbyshire and the wisteria is growing on a pergola in a very sheltered south facing garden. I’m not sure how many branches I should let grow off my main branch. Should I just get rid off the smaller weaker looking ones and let grow the stronger looking ones? How far apart do you think? Thank you! Kym.

Doesn't it damage the basement of the house, when planted so close to it?

I think there is potential for that to happen yes. Worth keeping in mind when planting. Mark

Lovely house Mark and what a wisteria, I have an Alba one on a pergola swinging chair which I made, I pruned for the first time back to three last winter and what a display of flowers. The years I didn't prune I was having a display of 2 to 3 very small flowers. I'll take your advice on a summer winter prune and see how it goes. Keep up the videos very inspiring!!

Hi Robert. Thanks for both your comments, this and thr tree fern comment. I really appreciate them. Thd pruning method i used for the wisteria was after lots of research and seems to be widely accepted, but having said that, my new neighbour has one and has done no pruning whatsoever, although i should add that his is in the perfect south facing sheltered condition. I've since moved house and will be planting a new wisteria over an arbor with some jasmine and honeysuckle. Best wishes. Mark

I will ask one question and it is about how I can match ivy and wisteria in same tree were they grow up on the tree, I think it can look nice and it lookes nice now when they aren’t so big but can I use same tree trunk for them? I have four tree trunk of Rowan tree and they are up on a very big stone/rock 😅 on the rock I have ivy and behind the rock I have settle down my wisteria to climbing up on the rock and up to the tree trunk and that goes well but now I see that the ivy also start climbing up on the tree trunk 😅 it lookes nice but can I let them do it on the same trunk or should I let them take one trunk each ? Hope u understand my question and have time to answere me 🙏🏼🥰
@MarksHouseandGardenUK Жыл бұрын
Hi there... I think you should just give it a try. Why not? The ivy will glue itself to the rock and tree and the wysteria can use it's tendrils to climb up. If that is what you want to try then i say give it a go 😊 gardening is flexible. We can try an experiment. Mark

Hello! I live in NC and I planted a wisteria about 4 years ago under a large pine tree. My objective was to let it run up the tree, however, it doesn’t seem to be doing much growing. Should I replant it in another location or leave it? Thanks
@MarksHouseandGardenUK2 жыл бұрын
Interesting. They can be slow to get going. Does the plant which already exists seem healthy enough. It may need more light and feeding if it is close to a tree. Also, i might consider checking the soil for acidity. But if the plant looks reasonably healthy perhaps give it a little longer and plenty food and water before relocation. Let me know how you get on. Mark

I also planted a wisteria 14 years ago. It's flowered beautifully most years, but this year no flowers yet? The leaves are appearing, so hoping it's just a bit late? We've had a very dry April, and it's in a sheltered corner spot. I've always loved wisteria, wish the flowers lasted longer! Your wisteria is beautiful. Do you feed yours?

Thanks Benita. I don't feed mine. Did you prune yours at all recently? I'm curious about the absence of flowers.

So my wisteria only just now started to throw out vines, my wisteria is quite short and I want to train it to grow around the house, so my question is do I leave the new vines that just spouted out now for the first time ever or do I trim those back slightly? If I keep trimming it back how to do I get it to grow around the house

Hi. If you want it to grow and train it let it go unpruned for now.

I have planted wisteria 3 years ago and the branches are about 3-4 feet around the tree. Can I prune the leaves around so I can see the main tree? Thanks for this very informative about pruning wisteria 👍👍
@MarksHouseandGardenUK2 жыл бұрын
Hi. If your main objective is to see the trunk then it is ok to prune back. But important to realise that pruning may reduce flowers. A good balance of growth and pruning, don't take too much away because you may weaken the plant. Best wishes. Mark

Thank you for the informative video! So should I do anything with a young wisteria? Our plant is on it's 3rd year after having grown over 11 feet from the 2nd year! At this time we're trying to have it grow across the top of the pergola so it can create some shade. Also, can, or how, do I create another plant from cutting?
@MarksHouseandGardenUK2 жыл бұрын
Hi jerry. You could prune it a little if you wish. Or alternatively you could let it keep going until it has covered your pergola. Has it ever flowered? I heard they can take 5 years to flower. Regards propagating it. I understand that cuttings is difficult. I tried a few times and always failed. Layering is supposed to be successful, pinning a whip to the earth until roots. They do produce seed pods but propagating from seed is complicated and takes years. Mark

@@MarksHouseandGardenUK our wisteria is now producing seed pods, should they be trimmed off to refocus its energy to growing?
@MarksHouseandGardenUK2 жыл бұрын
@@kjcase hi jerry. I had this same question before. My thought is that i never pruned mine of and always had festoons of beautiful blooms. I suspect a lot of the energy after flowering will go into new long green whips, which, when the plant is established are quite invasive anyway. So my personal opion would be prune if you want but don't worry too much of you can't. Mark
@elenawilson84432 жыл бұрын
I've had great results with root cuttings. I remember reading online that the plant will also bloom faster. I've given root cuttings to several friends some had blooms as early as 3 years. Others have taken up to 6 years. As you said it's all in the care of the plant. Proper pruning is time consuming but worth it. Here in the U.S. many people look at it as a menacing weed. 😞
