Update to reply: I gave it a gallon jug of Fertilizer and it perked up immediately. In fact over the last week it has actually grown and now has a beautiful bloom on it. I think that it needed a boost.

VERY HELPFUL AND DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS. I have a huge Wisteria problem. I have a Wisteria tree which must be at least 50 years old. It flowers beautifully but has completely outgrown the space I can allow it but do not know how to go about any form of pruning of how to find an experienced person in this field. We are not talking whip shoots we are talking huge branches. Any ideas

Morning Mike My pergola is in shape of triangle and the canopy over last 10 years has completely filled in. How much should I cut it back to allow air circulation? I made mistake of planting 8 seeds at the base wrapping it around and old metal pipe that was a laundry line. The blooms were prolific hanging down in May/June but my concern at this time is how much should I thin out the canopy so light and air can freely filter through. I would like to send you a few pics so you see what I do and can offer best advice. Let me know how best to do that, please. Thank you kindly Mike!! Donna B from Mass, USA

Hi Mike, I bought two small wisteria tree's in Aldi's (I'm not sure what kind they are), and they were both in the same place in my garden, getting the same amount of sunlight, shade and water each day, and one has thrown off a climbing runner and has now grown about 8 feet onto my trellis, but the other one just has branches and leaves......no climbing runners at all!! What can I do to encourage climbing runners please? Thanks in advance.

How easy is wisteria to propagate? Could you use the cuttings to water root new plants?
@valeriealford99924 жыл бұрын
I have had a wisteria growing against a west facing wall for 35yr. It has flowered one year 5 yrs ago with two beautiful pinky coloured flowers! In desperation I have cut it savagely back and still nothing but prolific foliage. I know that only if it would flower it would be so beautiful. I am thinking of giving it shock treatment this winter by chopping down into its roots. As you can imagine, at the age it is it’s trunk is 38 cms at the base then almost immediately it divides into two trunks of 25 cms and 15 cms then small branches coming off of them. Have you heard of shock treatment being given to Wisteria because it is the only option open to me so far as I know? When measuring I noticed that at the base of the 38 cms there is a kind of foot like on an Iris which is above the soil and not covered. Not a big area just a wooden lump of about 4 cms.

Hi: My wisteria was lovely this year. It didn't get trimmed last year. I know though that it needs to be trimmed twice a year. The problem is that I live in Eastern Canada. Pruning in July-August is no problem. However, in February-March, it is too cold and too much snow to get out there with a ladder. Is there another time I can prune? May isn't always the greatest either. Could I prune may be in June and then again Sept-Oct. ?

We moved into a home that has 2 Wisteria trees. We’ve been here 2 seasons. Each summer one of the trees has flowers ( not that many) and the second one has never had any. Is it because one is male and one female or should I be doing something to encourage flower growth? The trees both have a lot of floats and look good otherwise.

What if you have the wisteria grown out to how you want it. Seems if every year you cut back the whippy ends to five buds, then back to two or three in early spring, that eventually over several years it would just continue getting bigger. Can you keep cutting back to where it was previously?

I live in cold freezing weather during our winter time , sometimes is below zero and our summer are short , I have planted about 10 days ago two of the wisteria they are both getting planets of sun and water . one is doing very well while the other is not so encouraging , and is lazy the shoots are smaller comparing to the other tree , I feel like it will not make it if it will keeps on not participating in growing the leaves are getting dry What kind of care does it need to get it back to healthy again Also I’m wondering on how to keep it safe during the harsh weather and snow in the winter . It would be fine in a pot, just trim the excess before it gets away, the main issue with Wisteria is when planted in the garden it can travel under the soil and pop up somewhere else. You just have to keep an eye on it, the flowers make it worthwhile.

Hi, living in Newfoundland, in the North Atlantic for those that don't know where that is. My wisteria goes craaaazy in the summer but over the winter with the heavy snows, alot of the whippy bits die so I'm left with dead wood in the spring. I've just been cutting it off willie nillie. Some years there's lots of flowers some years not so many. Does your method work for my climate too? A very short summer, June to Aug.

Mike, is it possible that my wisteria just doesn't bloom? It is a 15 year old plant that has nice healthy greenery but never does it go into bloom. Is this common? I really want to see it flower!
@kenakamatsu41392 жыл бұрын
Do you fertilize and prune it? I've read you shouldn't fertilize it with nitrogen cause that will "empower" the leaves rather than the flowers. Use phosphorus and potassium ones instead and prune it..if it's a plant born from a seed flowering may not happen ever (or take a very long time), if it's a grafted plant it should flower though.

It's confusing when these garden vids speak in months, we should be referring to seasons as people all over the world watch these vids. If your January is winter then your Wisteria will come back in Spring. They are deciduous meaning they lose their leaves in Autumn and are dormant (asleep) over Winter.

Mike, can you please advise on a new Wisteria. I bought one last June from a garden centre, it was about 8' 00'' tall when planted, I have tied it to wires 12'00'' up the side of the house and then horizontally. The plant is now 7'00'' along the horizontal wire. I am loath to chop it short as I want growth, How long does one leave it before pruning, or should I have already cut it back? I want it to flower as soon as possible. It faces directly south, plenty of sunlight. Would be grateful for your advice. Many thanks Robert

I've heard let it grow the first year, no pruning
@kevintango65674 жыл бұрын
You don't prune the growth along the wires, any extra growth keep training along the wires until you think there is enough, the whippy growth that comes off these runners is what you prune. Depending on whether it is a grafted specimen or not, it can take a few years before you see flowers.

Hi Mike, I purchased a fairly large grafted wisteria this summer. Decided not to plant it where I had planned (on a trellis up a wall of my house) due to concerns about it getting under the siding. Now I think my only option is as a tree form. It is still in the large nursery pot and I haven't pruned it. I'm going to purchase a couple of U posts and then plant it and velcro it loosely to those. My question is, as it is November, should I do any pruning now and, if so, how much and what kind? Or, should I wait until February and then prune it? I'm in the Pacific NW (zone 8) in the US.
