I liked that muted sound so much that I hacked up a mediocre imitation with my VSTi upright piano by using its filter function with a steep cutoff (24db/octave) at 1kHz and a fast envelope attack. It doesn't sound as nice but my jacket won't fit into my laptop. edit: layering in a bit of harp gets it closer by giving it more pluck.
@TobyJBall4 жыл бұрын
Wayne Robinson you may have found it by now, but spitfire labs soft piano is a purpose made muted piano vst. And it’s free!
@Wayne_Robinson4 жыл бұрын
@@TobyJBall Good pointer; yes I've grabbed all the LABS instruments and have nice things to say about nearly all of them. Woody's mute setup is a very different and unique sound compared to any of the felt or soft pianos I've heard. It's more like an auto-wah clav sound with an initial bite that transitions quickly into the heavily muted tone. That makes it more percussive and suited to rhythm figures like this.

5:25 - I always get a little emotional during the climax of the Tee piece. Where he's slowly walking his way back to the tonic with ascending/descending bass-line. It's has almost classical sensibilities, like something Beethoven would do. Bass instruments with the left hand, tenors with the right.

Hey Doc, thanks for this. Thrilling to hear about Richard again. When albums came out with him on them in the 80s (Tom Scott, Stephane Grappelli, Grover Washington, then Strokin') I snatched them up immediately. He was a great pianist, and I just discovered Vulfpeck and I heard the Richard Tee in what's the name of that song--hey, no wonder you call it that! Anyway, great to see an accomplished pianist like you with an appreciation for the stylings of Richard Tee."Tee Time" reminded me of that gospel section he does in the middle of "You're Gonna Need Me" from Tom Scott's New York Connection. I ruined my roommate's copy of that album in college by playing it over and over and over and I still feel terrible about it. That was 1977.
