Glad I found this tonight. My first day on a longboard (or any wheeled board) was yesterday. As a surfer downhills were fun, but moving the board was a challenge after watching a couple of other vids. Your exercises & comparisons to comparable movements are going to help. Thanks, Shane

Are there other ways to move a board? Yes: keep your upper body stable, kick the board with your back foot backwards. This turns the board in relation to your shoulders and moves you a bit forward. Release the board, let it swing under your body to the other side and initiate the next swing in the opposite direction. This way, most of the momentum is created between hips and feet, with only little compression. Arms are only needed to keep balance. I assume that I as a beginner transferred my "slalom turns" from skiing to skateboarding. Your videos will certainly help me to learn "real" pumping.

For me leg compression was a gamechanger. I compress when going toeside, decompress when going heelside. Speed generation is based on backfoot movement. It makes pumping more efficient and more stylish
@mr.slater45774 жыл бұрын
this is actually the only technique which helps to improve "real" surfing. The other techniques might generate speed with a surfskate but can't be transfered to water. Cheers

Hi i will try this today! Can you explain what you mean in terms of the backfoot movement and how to use it for speed generation - i don't get it 😅
@s.kornatowski97872 жыл бұрын
@@simonfujiyama i changed the way I generate speed on flat, changing sides with compressed legs was bad for my knees. Now I compres and decompress on one side and then compress and decompress on the other. I put my weight on both feet equally

Been following your youtube Shane since I step on surfskating, now it's been 4 weeks practicing how to properly pump, your tutorials are really helpful expecially for me/for us newbies, bro could you also please or suggest how can we work with our toes and heels? Basically most newbies are focused not to fall so that brings our balance like mostly center and results in to wiggle pumping. Once again thanks for making these tutorial videos cheers!

Hey Shane, of all the setups & trucks you've tried, which do you think you can pump to the fastest flat-ground velocity? Besides trucks, which other factors are most important - wheelbase, wheel types, concave? I currently have a Yow Snappers S4 which I love and is very easy to pump from standstill and get up to speed, but that top speed is not very fast. I recently tried a Carver Black Tip CX which felt like it had a lot more to push against while pumping and let me go much faster, which got me wondering what the top speed looks like for other surfskates out there. Basically looking for something I can ride faster/farther than my S4 for longer flat ground commutes. Thanks for all the helpful videos!

This is so much fun to try and learn. Thanks a lot for taking the time to illustrate the movements. I'm not there yet but learning as I go. From what I noticed it seems the rotation starts with the arms and the body / feet follow after that. The more centrifugal force the higher the energy seems to be. One thing I noticed is the size of the board. The length of the board matches your stance which means the trucks are almost below your feet. Making the transition a lot more powerful. I have a Longboard where the truck distance is not matching my feet stance and obviously that results in a different behavior. Do you have a Longboard and can you perhaps try that using the same technique? I would be very interested to see how your approach would work on longboard. Love your videos and instructions. They are great and keep sharing.

Yeah it's all about the angular momentum. Like being on a bike and suddenly leaning on one side; if you don't press the gas, you fall, but if you accelerate at that particular moment, you straighten up and accelerate in that direction. I haven't tried on a longboard. But it's a rotation on the back wheels. So as long as your back foot is closed to the back wheels , it will work
@JakyCollier4 жыл бұрын
Well, longboard is nothing like surfskate. If u want to turn on surfskate all u need is move your body in that direction ( you can point with your front arm and body will follow) if u try that on longboard (moving your upper body u will fall.) on longboard u have to press the board with feet to turn. On surfskate u just shift your weight.

Do you have tips for going over curves on sidewalks on a surfakate other than carver? My carver glides over anything, but with my waterborne adaptor I’m too scared to attempt going up the sketchy curbs without knowing what to expect.

You just need to buy good surf skate to learn pumping. I've started to learn pumping on cruiser board. It was so hard. My front leg almost died. They I've bought Carver C7 board. It just rides by itself. I just need to turn left-right a bit and it's enought to pupm. The more you ride, the more you understand technique and improve you speed and power. i.e. can climb uphill with significant degrees. Re C7 - my wife could pump it in 5 minutes. Had OceanPacific surfskate: same technique required much more effort to gain and maintain the speed.

Shane the video is awesome. Kinda reminds me of Kettlebell swings. 2nd time on a surfskate and pretty happy with the results. Your videos did help! Thank you! To josh - practice lower back extensions like superman exercise to improve lower back strength. Your feet will get stronger too with more practice on the board. Side bends to stretch out the sides help too since the pump is a lil heavily reliant on one side of the body (if ur left foot is forward, left side lower back will feel worked more)
